Hi,

Bought a paddock stand recently to do some chain cleaning myself.

Would like to hear advice from those who likes DIY themselves what do you guys use to clean the motorcyycle chain which is a cheap and good method as not to damage the chain.

Thanks

Does the type of chain (roller, x/o-ring) matter when it comes to the cleaning agent (WD40, diesel, kerosene, etc?)

bro,

Tried using WD40 before to clean chain. And even lube after that. Found that it's too thin and chain always gave a sound when riden After rain, found that the chain rust more easily. Not sure u experience that or not. That y not using WD40 after that...

Finally, did the 2nd trial on friend's bike just now.

What I did last Sunday myself for my own bike chain cleaning. Takes abt 1-130hr + bike wash.

Items used;

1) newspapers

2) cotton gloves

3) cotton cloths

4) maxima chain lube

5) chain cleaner (found that chain wax is a good removal of dirt too. Used for pre-treatment to rub off dirt)

And effect is damned amazing.. Cheers

That's the same thing I read on the topic of chaincleaning with WD40 from angmoh websites. Riders commented that WD40 may not be suitable since it eats away the protective coating on the chain, leading to faster wear and tear.

Used to spend 1 hour just to clean the chain.

Then I got this at a roadshow for $50 or so.

Nowadays, just used 5-10 mins to clean the chain, saved alot of back braking time. :)

Ya agreed.. But its the satisfaction spending time with my baby... actually chain cleaning part takes about less than 30 mins.

These are the photos. (The chain is definitely existing, not new)

Haha,

not sure about MucOff but one of these days I will try out and experience their products myself.

Bought lots of chain wax and cleaner in the past and starting to use them up first before getting new ones. Started to junk up my place already..

I got my old and rusty jack with worn rear sprocket as its base at $10 from my bikeshop hahaha.

Hmm because i was plain lazy, i just used diesel, a tooth brush( use one thats made of flexible plastic!), a rectangular container (to catch the dripping diesel from the chain so that i reuse it), newspapers and a rag.

However, yes, this does strip its protective lubricant and your chain WILL rust despite efforts to preserve it. I am sure WD40 will have the same effects too. Western countries are less humid ; that may be why. I stay by the coast. However, cleaning took less than 5 minutes for a sparking chain.

I resigned to fate..

Thus, i am now using 10w40 oil from a Diy dripper (eg Like scottoiler) to prolong the chain. The chains are damn clean but the oil runs off real easy.

Ive yet to get my hands on a thicker oil eg. w70 or so which i believe would do a better job staying on the chains.

If i were to reccomend, i would suggest using read newspapers to clean. Put it on the stand, roll the wheel with another hand and run the chain through the newspapers. If you are using wax etc, use a lightweight oil to assist. If you want an even cleaner chain, use a soft cloth and repeat. Best to clean after you reach home from a ride when your chain is warmed up.

This is how you should lubricate your chain afterwards

Sorry, this is the best pic i can find http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTBLstomLs_WzMcmVMIfGb5zinuLSEKQ-ec3Tr1xETCv1oBGO8W

Most of us just spray at the rear sprocket because its convenient and chain lube is expensive. hahaha.

But if you think rationally, when you spray the interior part of the chain, thats critical because thats where the chain meets the sprocket and the next time you ride, centrifugal force causes the lube to push to the exterior.

I was a fan of maxima chain wax because of the no fling properties.

I'll be on dupont soon. From reviews, this is the best. No fling and flows great and no debris.

Whatever it is, stay away from GP 1 or ELF chain lube.

just imaging...never have to clean chains any more..as the oiler will do the task while you ride..

your chains are truly clean....

but the results from the oiler is good too..when you compared to most bikes...

yours take the cake..

as to your question of dirt..ie road grimes pick up by the chain lube/grease/oil...yes it does.

but it will be removed while you ride almost "immediately"..end result minimal road grimes..

on the other hand your chains will continue to pick up road grimes until the next cleaning before they are removed. so the continuos cleaning by the oiler results in max chain life envied by most..50,000km is common...100,000km life is not surprising either..

the idea of tip top chains..with max chain life....is now feasible..

the amount of consumables you use..ie commercial/cleaner chain lubes etc..is no longer needed once you have the oiler on..saves you $$$$$$$$$$$$ which will pay for the oiler in no time.

..a minute of efortless cleaning the rims and swing arm is my experience ..with tissue paper.

yes a piece of tissue paper will do the job in a jiffy..

oiler chain lube cost..estimated to be 0.03 cents per km....so low that nobody bothers to keep count..

so you see while others are cleaning their chains...with TLC of course..

i will be having a beer or something..

please call me...we can discuss ..and demostrate the cleaning action of the oiler.

Dear bros..

The best way to wash or clean your chain is using Kerosene...this will get rid all the dust and oil...

the apply chain wax..any brand in the market will do, even greese..

Prefer to lube chain every 1000km or ride after rain..

Never never use EO as chain lube as EO contain sustance that can attack the o-ring in the chain.

You can find this in your bike manual...Please read
