hey guys with the increase in bike theft , i was wondering if i buy this chain and lock and park in malaysia , would this lock and chain keep my bike secure?

Which one would be a better option for touring into malaysia? when im not touring i'll secure my bike in my condo carpark to a secured object.

Dude are you crazy?Look at the price for both.I can buy a second hand bike for the Krypt lock.

The almax is good enough but the price is $150 pounds without shipping.Good luck.

But if you can get locally with a good price, good for you.

just buy a good quality thick chain from hardware store and maybe a military grade Abloy lock to pair with it. i think that is as good as it can get without paying for expensive brand name so you can save the money for a 1st party insurance.

it cost 160 sgd with shipping from ebay for the kryptonite. where to buy 2nd hand bike for that price? It is a huge price if u compare it with a 2b bike but if u use it to lock a 20k or even 30 k bike what is 160 bucks man

For me these are not necessary. Added weight when touring. Juz get disc locks will do. If still worried, get a cable loop. Lighter than these things.

Anyway thick locks like these are easy to break if the theft use the right tools. So many weak links. As for cables, those good ones are coated with oil that makes it almost impossible to cut as the oil makes it slippery.

Example are these

As for locks, I use Yale Outdoor lock with the above cable loops.

I don't know about you but it never safe to leave your big bike unattended in Malaysia even with proper lock. If the crooks wants your bike, even if you put 100 locks and alarms on the bike, they will still have ways to take your bike (together with your expensive locks and alarm).

Right now, the only few places I am comfortable leaving my bike unattended are those mountain destination like Genting and Cameroon.

But if you still want to try, you could follow @IvikaRazI advise. No need to carry so heavy duty lock. Just lock smartly like what we always say, work smart, not hard. But then again, same applies to those crooks. Cheers!

How is your experience with the Yale outdoor lock bro? does it rust under long exposure to rain? Been looking for an outdoor lock but worried if it stuck after rust..

Great suggestion. I think I would get those cable loops as well.

The cables i think can be cut with a bolt cropper. the chains cant be cut with that . i saw the reveiw for those chains

so genting is pretty safe to park bikes?

No lots of bikes got stolen there. The last time round,my friend brought a thick and long chain, all chained together.

Thats why i'd rather be safe . anyway these chain links are very strong when u use hand tools to cut it , its near impossible, power tools are a diff story, however i dont think thieves will use power tools as alot of noise involved. disc lock will not prevent carry away thefts so the only option is a strong badass chain as a deterrent and locked to a solid object for maximum peace of mind. anyway when touring the chain will be in ur bag pack and resting on the seat so u wont feel it ,. when u reach , it will be on the bike so u dont carry it . when not touring and ur area permits, u can chain it to a railing near a bike lot. (good for non smokers) when u warm up bike, got something to do which is to unchain ur bike:)

If you always have touring buddies. These chain locks are pretty useful. Both riders share the cost to bring a chain lock in. When you have to park oovernight, put two bikes near to each other and chain both bikes tires together. If the thieves wanna carry away, at least its harder. Anyway we can only deter but cannot prevent. Riding overseas, better booked good hotels. Dont save few dollars ended up losing the bikes

I used those bicycle chain very think type....The hardware shop uncle told any part of the loop should not be placed on the ground...Loop as tight as possible at the swing arm, when you lock make sure dont have space to place a chain cutter....It needs a base, if you can make harder to cut then they might just give up...So far my years of touring seem to be safe....But nothing can stop a determined thief.....

Agreed...If they wan to steal, if you put guard dog, also the bike will go missing. To be creative, with those huge chains, I will juz bring along a bottle of liquid nitrogen + hammer hehehhe.

Best is that you do not park your bike in secluded & unknown places, not only in Malaysia but this also applies in Singapore. Travel in groups does makes it more safer. And the best advice I can give is to canvas the bike. If the thief does not know what is under the hood, they won't be tempted to steal.

I think any chain above 15mm cannot be cut with hand tools . (the one im aiming for)... here are some proofs

Trust me...thieves knows wat they are doin. If they wan it, it will disappear in less than 10 sec. There is even a comment at the youtube vids....

"You look like your not putting much effort into trying to cut your chain, i broke this chain with 4 strikes of a slkedge hammer.... do not trust this"

Have you considered Alarm system also? There are also alarm disc locks. Those are loud enough to wake up the dead. Anyway in the end, the choice is still up to you. Can never have enough security for peace of mind hahahah.
