Often the best method is to use the 'prefix' only . (postfix like L, E, S, SE, SM, R, WR, etc only add to the confusion. They are generally used to describe a characteristic of that model range.)

E.g. the Honda XL is the older range of offroad bikes during the 80's and early 90's. The current range is the XR. Popular is the XR125L so called 'urban scrambler', street legal dual purpose. Though IMHO for a 125 is slightly pricey. Also is the XR250 "Twister" or "Tornado" another street legal dual purpose. The new XR range goes up to 650 I think. All are 4 stroke, w/ electric start, some have cat converter etc etc. :sweat:

I am confused too.

 

The XL range was dual purpose(road/Offroad), metal tank and kickstart only (wid the exception of XL600RM/LM - which had electric n kick). This range was actually discontinued being replaced by the NX/Dominator range(125,250,650)- also metal tank and electric start (Not sure of the NX125 tho).

 

The XR range was pure off-road plastic tank, kickstart only(to save on weight) and actually with no ignition switch, no turn indicators and horn(only models for certain countries needed to get on da road hadda horn and indicators).

 

I got lost when XLR range started so my advice is read all the specs related to each bike you are considering but know this, the old (pre FP plate) XR200Rs(no disk brake) had the beeffier forks and the engine had grunt, later models ended up with the same fork as the XL200R and I guess a less hp engine.

Just my two cents worth.

xr200r and xl200 its abt the same. (brazilian model) both is electrical starter.

 

xr125 (2004 production) electric starter

 

xr200r (1990's model) kick starter.

 

DR200 (1990's and 2004 model) electric starter

 

All dual sport. Tried xr200r electric start before. Shiok!!! Wen Stall on the road, can start easily. No need to panic.
