sotong tyres becoming more common?

i see more and more bikes around with sotong (skinny) tyres.. is this a new trend in singapore? looks very unsafe to me. notice most of the bikes that are running these sotong tyres are those delivery bikes (grab, panda). is it because they are cheaper and give better fuel economy? suddenly thought of this cause i saw a heavily modded adv150 with sotong tyres on facebook. can't imagine a XMAX with sotong tyres hahaha has anyone done it?

Spot on, most people do it for the increased speed/acceleration and also improved fuel economy.

IMHO, it's not worth the trade-off though unless you don't travel at very high speeds and take extra care and caution during wet days. The engineers that designed the bikes put the appropriate sizes and width on the motorcycle from the factory so to go against that would be unsafe to say the least.

It's been a worrying trend since 10 years ago but with more and more delivery riders in recent times, this trend does seem to be coming back in Singapore.

Just wondering if this is LTA compliant and if it'll pass the vehicle inspection process?

agreed! would feel safer going with the manufacture specs

Haven't seen any on an XMAX but here's a NMAX on sotong tyres. Seems like the wheel size has been upsized too!

Of course sotong tyres do exist on XMAXs... but it’s from a drag race competition in Thailand.

This NMax looks pretty good on the skinny tyres. Notice the rears have also been changed to "sotong" kind. Wonder how much modification was need as the drive-side might be tricky since the diameter and width are all different.
