Bike Stalling While Riding - Honda Tiger 200cc

Hi seniors,

I am riding a Honda Tiger 200cc. It is a 9 year old bike and I quite a noob in motorbikes. Just happened this morning, it was usually difficult to start my Tiger and as usual, I only manage to get it running after about 10 tries. What is different from other days was that it stalled when I would just about 100m out on the road. I thought it ran out of fuel and I top up $10. After starting it again, the same way it died on me and I was nearly ran over by a taxi. Finally, I decided to push it back to my car park since it was less than 100m away. 

This evening, when I was back home from work, I tried to start it again. Almost exactly the same way as it happened in the morning, it started and died just after 3 seconds. 

Can any experienced with kind heart enlighten me on what could be the reason and where is the best place to fix this?

Hi @Cheong, welcome to SBF and congrats on your Tiger. I assume yours is the 2012 model?

Seems like a common problem between Honda Tiger owners, there's a long owners thread which you can refer to here:

Regarding your starting problem, do you start the bike with the choke pulled out or not? You should start with the choke out and close it slowly after a few seconds.

On the stalling issue, could be a few issues but start first with adjusting the main jet and idle valve. Could also be the spark plug and if it's been awhile since you have changed that, you can consider changing the spark plug too.

The issue bro @muhdaiz had sounds similar to your issue:

If you're handy you can try DIYing the fix, otherwise best to get a bike shop to check it out for you. Most Tiger owners in the thread recommended Bikewerkz so you can start there.

P.S. Are you going to renew the COE after it expires next year? Not many Honda Tigers left on SG roads..

My bike stalls during riding when:

1) battery connector screw loosen. Need to tighten screw.

2) hose from fuel tank loosen and drop out. Poke the hose back.

Hi,

So the real, real problem was, I did not know my bike well. As i just took over the bike, and when i could not get it running in the morning when i was going to work, i started to panic a little. Conclusion is; it was just cold start. Now that i know my bike better, i have no problem in starting it at all.

Lesson learnt: Know your bike well. It is important for maintenance purpose as well as safety. 

Add on: Tiger is actually quite a good ride. My feeling is; it is like a mini Super4...the feeling compared to Yamaha YBR (125) is really incomparable. Tiger can easily cruise at 110km/h..and the stability is great.

common problem for new owners.. took me 3 months to get used to my drz as i was riding a scooter before that.. maintenance and upkeep very different.. also had to look for new workshop that specialize in drz
