actually the new fz1 not bad lah, it's moved away from a tourer, it's a supersports but in the more relax form as compare to R1 with a more comfy riding position. a real comfortable tourer will be those FJRs and STs.. those are so good :lovestruck:

ya. it's a different type of bike. don't forget to have fun out of this bike you have to high rev it. the 06 starts to be nice from 5k on, and goes mad 8k on. not on local road loh. and local riding constitutes 90% of my riding and mileage. then once a year trip the tank range not far enough.

i know what u mean, my bike's the same, when my rpm is at 8k, i'm way above the speed limit on local roads.. so seldom get to enjoy this hidden top range of my bike  as for the tank, nt much choice leh, they don't have a touring tank like AT loh. that one can pump enough to last for nearly 2 wks.. just pump more often when u're out touring :cheeky:

-------------------------

OK, I am back. I had to eat. I was bonking hard.

Earlier today I did my workout, hopped on my FZ1 and rode to the shop hoping that they would have an 06 but not really expecting much. When I got there, the guy I always deal with practically pushed me out the door on the new 06. I don't know what I did to deserve a test ride because as far as I know they usually don't allow it on their sportbikes.

So I hopped off my 03 and hopped on the 06 and I was gone for an hour or so...

Fit, Finish & Curb Appeal

Many have seen it in person already but for those who haven't let me just say that it looks mean, tough and elegant all at once. The lines are fantastic. I was a little worried after hearing some of the early reports of too much plastic and poor build quality. Yes there is plastic, perhaps a bit more than the current FZ1 but it certainly is not any different than say an R1, Hayabusa, etc. I thought the build quality was excellent - some of the best I've seen.

The other thing that had me worried was the bulbis like appearance of the tank. I didn't know if I'd like it because in photos it looks out of proportion. The tank flows with the rest of the lines and it looks great. One thing about the tank though. The front is painted plastic and the slope from the top down to the seat is dramatic so I don't know how well certain tank bags are going to fit. We'll have to see.

Comfort, Rider Position & Handling

It should be no surprise that this is what will make or break the deal for many people who are thinking of upgrading from previous year's FZ1. As we've all heard the position is more sporty and this is definitely the case.

I sat more forward but I didn't feel as if it was too much. I was worried about this believe me because I don't like feeling like I'm over the front wheel of the bike. In fact it was perfect. The pegs felt higher and a bit further to the rear. It felt good though. Are the comfy ergos of the old fizzy long gone? Well, honestly, yes but it will depend on your fitness. From shoulders to bars it feels almost like my 03. What's gonna bind up your hips, ass cheeks and knees is the peg position. It's not radical though, not like an R1.

I feel that I could do 400 - 500 mile days on the new FZ1. However, I work out daily and I am an avid cyclist. But I'll be 43 in june and age is becoming a factor. It would not scare me away from the more sporty ergos of this new FZ1 though. If you are out of shape and unfit, this bike would be worth hitting the gym for.

When I first got my 03 the wind buffeting was horrible. I instantly noticed that this wasn't a problem on the new 06. Air flow was even and smooth. You are still out in the wind it's just not as noticable as earlier models. I'd even go so far as to say that it's better than my 03 which now has a double bubble.

The 06 is not that much lighter than older models but it feels a lot lighter. The front end turns in easier and you can actually say now that the bike is flickable. I dislike the word but it's true and you can throw it around pretty good. Really.

The seat height and COG feels lower. Is it? I don't even know I just know what I feel and it feels lower. One thing though. At first I kept bangin my calf into the pegs at stops until I go used to them being different.

I liked the seat. In fact I liked it a lot. For me, it was more comfortable than my stock 03 but it's hard to know what it would feel like after a full day of riding.

Suspension

Oddly enough this is an area that's hardest for me to get a feel for on a short test ride. It would take some time to get a more accurate impression. It felt way stiffer but didn't feel like there were problems such as packing etc. It was compliant and maybe a bit harsh at times. I liked it though. It gave the bike a confident, positive feel. The rear shock assembly looked cheap though. I don't even know who makes it.

The Engine

Oh my god. It's fast guys. It's really fookin fast. And it's fast in a knarly, wicked hooligan ###### sort of way. I lifted the front wheel twice which is something I have never done and never practiced. In fact I was just asking in another thread if it was possible on my 03. This thing will power wheelie. Be careful.

OK, lets talk about the FI. I was worried. But it's not bad and it's certainly better than my FJR. I could feel a few rough spots and it would take some more time to ferret them all out but I was surprised - a little rough but not as bad as early reviews made it sound.

This 06 wasn't as smooth as my 03 though. Bigger pistons spinning? Does it need to be synched up? I don't know. A Power Commander would no doubt help and there's something to be said for our old analog carbs guys. I wouldn't call it buzzy though. It didn't feel buzzy. Perhaps some of what I felt was simply transferred through the handlebars which don't appear to be mounted in rubber like ours are.

Should I Upgrade?

IMO, if you have just bought an 04 or 05 I wouldn't. Not unless you have the money and you simply want the latest. Our pre 06 models are wonderful. I literally hopped off the 06 and back onto my 03 and I was smiling and having fun on my ride back home.

However, if you've had your bike for a few years and are itching to try something new, you might want to seriously consider an upgrade. I am. This bike would be perfect for those who were thinking about getting an R1 but weren't sure of the ergos.

That's all I can think of guys. Ask questions if you want. because I know I've missed stuff. I imagine others will add their opinions as they test ride or pick up their bikes.

-------------------------

A Day Later - Notes

Got some PMs etc, asking about different things.

Low end grunt and power below 5K?

IMO, it's about the same off the line as the current model. Maybe give it a bit more juice and slip the clutch a tad more. When I did some rollons at various speeds I noticed it was a little different than my 03. In fact there wasn't as much grunt in certain spots but then there was way more in other spots. Oh noooo what to do? Drop a gear and problem solved! It won't be a problem for any of us - not unless you are really picky and looking for things not to like.

Instruments?

How fast am I going? Fook if I know! Where is the speedo dammit there's a cop!

It's right there in big huge LCD numbers! I've never had a digital speedo on anything except my cycle computer so for 5 minutes or so it didn't register. It takes a while to get used to it and it is different IMO. With an analog speedo you can just kind of glance at it and you know. You get feel for where that needle is without really looking at the digits. With a digital speedo it feels different. It didn't bother me and it wouldn't be a deal killer but I didn't like it as much as I always thought I would.

Exhaust Notes? ? ? ?

It sounds pretty damn nice when you romp on it. I'd say it was somewhere between my Holeshots and the stock pipe. At idle it sounds pretty tame, maybe a touch more throaty than the current stock pipe. I really like the looks of the pipe too. It flows with the rest of the bike's lines and gives that area of the bike an organic look almost like it's alive. :-)

Brakes?

The brakes were new and actually felt like crap. When they are properly broke in they should be excellent though. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the new FZ1 gets the same brakes as the standard R1 with the rear rotor being a bit larger.

Not as smooth as your 03? WTF?

You know how certain vocalists have a raspy voice and yet they still sound great? Others have a smooth perfect voice and they sound good too. One isn't better than the other they are both great but different? That's the best I can describe what I felt between my stock 03 and the 06 with FI.

A throttle body synch might make it smoother and the bike will probably respond well to a Power Commander.

How does it compare to a Tuono?

I've got no idea and I wish I knew! The Tuono is also a bike I am really interested in. IMO, both Aprilia and Yamaha have done the same thing with their standard bike - they took their superbike and made it naked. The Tuono is the most direct transformation as I don't think they did a single thing to the engine they just took off the tupperware and changed the bars.

I predict we will be hearing a lot over the next months about the new FZ1 and it will be a huge hit once people adjust to the changes.
