I believe that when it comes to long-distance touring, it's more the rider than the bike; you can go anywhere (that's properly paved) as long as you have a reliable machine. It'll just take longer, your ass will be more sore, and you'll have to always worry about the next fuel stop.

I found ReBornBikeR's comment quite offensive, really. Putting someone down because he's done something beyond your own comfort level is not nice at all. Riders who insist that one can only tour on a big bike are like douchebags with big fat prosumer DSLRs telling others using point-and-shoots that they can't take good photographs, and that no one else should try unless they have "proper gear".

Props to the OP for doing something I wouldn't have. The Fino's a great little scooter (rode it around Chiang Mai and barely made it up and down Doi Suthep with it), but I don't see myself enjoying long rides on it. I plan to ride up to Pai on my DRZ400SM, though. ;)

So true..... Well said tot...

That opinion is also similar to car owners looking down at bikers and having the mindset that only cars are worth on e road and everyone else shld just get lost....

I salute people that muster the courage to do things that typical people won do and succeed in it... Thats how innovation and entrepreneurship came abt as well...

why even bother about his/her opinion?

don't be offended bcoz of his/her ignorance.

we just enjoy the ride k?

The only reason why I'm not laughing with you is that I prefer laughing at you.

Finding someone's opinion offensive and being offended by it are not quite the same thing, but thanks for the sentiment.

I think it's important to speak out in support of riders like the OP who have the guts and determination to do what many riders don't want or don't have the opportunity to do. This particular section of the SBF forums is, after all, meant for people to share their riding experiences and inspire others to do the same.

Killjoys saying things like "oh, your bike is too small; just stay in Singapore" shouldn't be made welcome here.

Cool. So when are you riding to Pai? Do avoid March-June as it'll be scorching hot..

Yeah, Chiang Mai's quite unpleasant to ride around in outside of the cool dry season, so it's either this December or the next, depending on whether I can sort out other things that need doing.

Hmm, gixxer73 didn't state when he made his trip. By the looks of the clear skies in his pictures I'm guessing between Nov-May.

DRZ400SM?

Wouldn't you need to bring a spare change of eo?

Isn't the OCI for DRZ400SM is 1000km?

Cheers!

Goodee hor hot goodee... Mat witz sebastian! :p

Yeah, the OCI is 1000km, but I'll be using fully-syn EO for the trip (which should double the range) and will probably get it changed at a shop in Bangkok on the way up and then back.

Wonder what's the OCI on a Fino.

Riding the fino no doubt is slow....but the ride is very smooth and barely not much vibration and my right hand dun feel numb as I was travelling between 90 to 95km/h...much better than most of the big bike I rode in the past...why small bike over big bike...just my humble opinion...

First savings on petrol....wear and tear parts cost over big bike and small bike...small bike dun attract lots of attention...at nite can sleep well...more than a decade ago...on the way bk home to khon kaen..stop over at phattalung with my gs..midnite came down and many guys surround my bike...wake wifey up and continue journey...spare parts availability..go.touring with a piece of mind is the most important...dun need to worry...just pack and go,,,ride free...just t shirts....berm and legging...in life...how much u eat...u live u wear is predestined...dun need to worry so much...sorry na...its not that big bike no good na...just dun wanna spend so much...hehe..chok dee na krub...

Because on big bike, you'll get there faster, less time on the road, less chance of things you don't want to happen happening, less fatigue, the earlier you reach the hotel the better.

Well that's my reasoning but I salute riding a small bike all the way on the road shoulder. To me minimum Super 4, ample power, mileage, I can't fathom riding small bikes for long distances.

Holy crap, you had a pillion? Haha. Even more fierce.

Yeah, the thing I didn't like about the Fino is it's serious lack of torque; every other 110-125cc rental cub I rode could do hill climbs so much more easily.

I completely agree with you on that point. Plus, being confined to the road shoulder (and the shittier road conditions there) and the turbulence from passing trucks certainly raises the risk of a crash. Which means more credit is due for someone who's braved shoulder-riding all the way.

I've seen that name pop up a few times, but I still have no idea what that is. Enlighten me, please?

I dun really ride on the road shoulder...rode at the lane just beside the road shoulder...cos riding on the road shoulder can cause punture easily...most of the times the driver will do thumbs up when they pass me by...hehe...

The bike has been pushed hard and it was well utilized.
