Agree! It is a great experience to swim in the waterfall and the water in some area is deep enough for you to dive in too. You can also go for jazzcuzzi/massage by the falling water too. Very shiok :thumb:

Daschie:

The wood-fired pizza you mentioned is opposite baba house (hotel) along tan cheng lok. Thin biscuit-like base, not as good as spizza but it's good stuff at very reasonabe prices. Opens till late (midnight or later) so it's a good place for a late night snack. It's also a relaxing artsy fartsy place upstairs for drinks & such. not crowded at all.

THis time, we decided to try different eateries. Our recent Malacca feast fest is as follows:

Day 1

Mid afternoon snack - Cendol from the mangosteen-shaped stall opposite stratburys. Thumbs down. it's so bad that chubby hubby pushed his bowl away after a few spoonfuls. Very thin coconut milk & somewhat salty. Got scolding from him, said it was a bad start. But when I was doing my research, so many urls point to this as a "secret" good place for cendol.

Dinner - Bunga Raya walkabout. Popiah stall parked outside a coffeeshop inside Jln Kee Ann. Damn sinful, felt so guilty eating it as every mouthful had crunchy lard pieces. Goodness, some pieces were larger than a 50c coin, really couldn't bring myself to consume them. But because of them, the fillings were damn tasty. Dad & chubby hubby thoroughly enjoying them. Char Kway Teow a couple of stalls down was really good.

Walked into the alleyway beside Mdm Kings where you'll see the carrot cake & yue cha kuih stalls. Gave them a miss this time round & headed for the shellfish stalls right inside. Very 60's style of eating where you sit on really low stools with equally low tables. Ordered lala & this round snail (dunno what it's called). The lady would just blanche them in boiling water & you eat it with this hae koh/belacan/lime/peanut dip. Damn yummy - & I don't like shellfish! The jiu he eng chye was very good too.

After that, walked down to 60-77 Medan Makanan Bunga Raya (actually a broad alleyway beside a coffeeshop) for some hor fun. Not bad, but locals seem to order the fried beehoon & the fried thick black noodles. Dad thinks his favourite hor fun (see below) coffeeshop is better. Stomach bursting by then.... cannot eat anymore so no chance of trying them. BTW, the stall is right inside. In front is the popular oyster omelette. The wan ton mee at the coffeeshop is good too.

Went back to hotel for helpings of peppermint tea & enos.

Day 2

Breakfast - Corner coffeeshop at Jln Hang Jebat & Jln Tkg Besi (after the coffeeshop is the orang utan shop), dad's favourite breakfast spot. Ordered mee sua, hor fun & omelette. The mee sua has always been my favourite. Has lots of liao bits - mini oysters, minced pork, liver, small intestines, sliced pork, etc. Sure I don't eat the liver, oyster & intestines but they contribute to a tasty stock. Dad has always loved the hor hun as it reminds him of his younger days when hor fun was done right. Washed down with chinese tea.

Walked up to Jln Kampung Pantai as dad wanted to buy a carton of century eggs - that's right folks, a carton - 60 eggs..... I should be grateful, my parents' last trip got them buying 90 century eggs!!

Lunch - Teo Chew BKT at 363 Jln Melaka 4, Tmn Melaka Raya. 7am - 2pm. It's the clear sort of BKT but not the peppery ver. you get in s'pore. In fact, it's herbal. We ordered the mixed meat version. Has ribs, belly pork, kidney, beancurd skin, rats ears. Dunno why, but the 2nd helping of soup had a stronger taste of herbs. The stewed trotters was pretty good too. Not the vinegared sort, but gravy was so drinkable & tasty. Yam rice is pretty good too.

I realised they had an ingenious way of preparing tender pork ribs in a very short period of time & I wish s'pore bkt hawkers adoped it instead of serving up tough pork ribs. Their secret weapon - the pressure cooker. They simply add the ribs with some stock, put on the stove till the pressure rises. When done, transfer to the sink, splash water on the lid till pressure indicator drops & tender ribs for all! Oh ya, the makansutra guide does not give very concise address. Fortunately, I have other guides to fall back on.

Dinner - Teo Soon Loong Chan at 55 Jln Hang Kasturi. Very popular teochew eatery. As there was only 3 of us, we ordered the essentials. Suckling piglet, steamed fish, oyster noodles, kai lan & orh nee. Oyster noodles was wonderful. Adding black vinegar & raw garlic to it brings it to a whole new dimension! And their sambal with ikan bilis is so good. They sell them btw, but our hotel has no fridge, so didn't buy. Food was fantastic but we found the steamed fish over cooked.

As we thought of having ikan bakar for dinner the next day, we decided to recce after our meal (you know, a hungry person is an angry person, so no good to search for these far flung eateries whilst hankering for food). When we were returning, we thought we try our luck with our favourite putu piring (252, Jalan Tenkera (next to the Sports Toto shop)) & oh joy, it was opened (we reached there past 10pm). Had putu piring in the hotel room, washed down with peppermint tea & enos.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 3

Breakfast - Hokkien style BKT at Lim Kee Restaurant, Lot 180, Jln Laksamana Cheng Ho, beside Tan Kim Hock Hotel. 7.30am - 2pm. BKT is dark coloured herbal style. Have to say we were somewhat disappointed by the taste as we expected it to be more herbal but as with the previous bkt, request extra soup & it tastes stronger. This one has more dang qui. Again, we ordered the mixed meat. We find this one has more liao than the other (but not that the other gives very little). The stewed trotters is the vinegared version. Nice but on the sweet side. Dipping the yu cha kueh pieces in the gravy was actually quite addictive. Yam rice is nice.

Can shop at Tan Kim Hock Hotel for goodies or have durian cendol if that's what drives you wild.

Lunch - Pork porridge & mee hoon kway at G20, Jln PM3, Plaza Mahkota. Wanted something light as the highlight of the day would be the ikan bakar place. Overall, it's not bad, minced meat was well seasoned but what was disturbing was that the rice grains, though "blossomed", was whole, but the porridge was gummy. Though it was quite cheap, hubby hubby was complaining that we should have gone to his favourite porridge haunt instead.

Dinner - Medan Ikan Bakar at KM4-5 Jln Padang Temu, Permatang Temu. 5pm - 12am. Seafood galore! We didn't know what's available so we went over the seafood table to order. Ordering was scary..... we pointed to a smaller fish but the chap took a larger fish, we wanted prawns & the chap gave us 2 large handfuls... the prawns were HUGE (getting worried, dunno how much our dinner is going to cost)! We thought lala won't be alot because the shells tend to bulk up the amount, but no. The clams were split beforehand so every shell has meat. Goodness! The guy scooped 2 large handfuls! Ordered sotong, sambal kangkong & 5 sticks of otak.

Fish was split into 2 & done ikan bakar in banana leaf & sweet sour. The ikan bakar style was SO GOOD! Fish was fresh, flesh was so tender & even though there wasn't much seasoning in it, it was wonderful! Sweet sour ver. had the fish fried then souce poured over. Fish was crispy & it's not bad but when fish is fresh, you don't want so much flavourings; we'd rather the whole fish done ikan bakar style. Large prawns was a mountainful! I think they were fried & very nice. Sotong was covered with flour & tumeric & fried. Slightly on the salty side but rather good. Aiyah, everything was good! The sambal on the lala & kangkong was tasty & the chilli wasn't in-your-face spicy. What was memorable was that we kept eating & eating but it wasn't finishing! I would have thought the lala would finish the fastest but no, every shell had meat on it so as long as there were shells on the plate, there's certainly more meat! Even I ate the lala! Locals were staring at the amount we ordered. Every table would be served 6 mini packets of nasi lemak - with sambal only. Fragrant, light, very nice. Don't order the coconut, not nice. Surprisingly, it was disgustingly cheap!! Came up to RM109 only!! With the amount we ate & seafood super fresh, we're certainly coming back for more!

May take some effort looking for this place. It's way past auntie lee's. There's a painted signboard - very nostalgic looking. You must turn before it. Then it's a long bumpy road all the way in. BTW, there is another ikan bakar place across the bridge from this eatery & it's featured in one of my guidebooks, looks like they serve very similiar stuff, but this one seemed more popular.

Day 4

Dad suffering from seafood overdose. The ikan bakar feast yesterday, the oyster noodles the evening before & the back alley shellfish on the 1st evening has caused his fingers to swell slightly..... oh dear, got to go easy on the seafood for a while.

Breakfast - Wantan mee at 40 Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock. Simple but tasty wantan mee. Dad was snooping around the neigbourhood morning market behind baba house earlier in the morning & bought kueh dada & putu mayam. Pretty good. Putu mayam uses gular melaka instead of the red sugar. Very nice.

Lunch - Wanted something light as dad wants to wander around the local (sat evening only) pasar malam behind baba house area. So we tried the Taiwanese beef noodles, pork noodles, stewed trotters & porkchop at Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle, No. 11-J, Jalan Bachang. Opens 7.35am-6pm. Closes every 2nd & 4th Thursday. Dad & I loved the beef noodles, it's slightly spicy with finely chopped preserved veg. Comes with a small bowl of soup which was yummy - tasted somewhat like mala soup without the numbing sensation. I think the noodles are hand made. They're like mee pok but twice the width. The fried pork chop looked dry but not really, just that it's nothing spectacular. Trotters whilst not awful, can do without.

HAve to say I find the address odd as the stated road is way above Jln Tun Perak. So here are the road directions: Travel along Jln Tun Perak (from city centre) & you'll see Plaza Soon Seng (Fajar). The road will split to turn right & straight ahead. Go straight & there'll be a small split road. Go in & travel on & you'll see a 4D signage on the left. The taiwanese noodles is at the corner coffeeshop next to the building with the 4D signage. If you travel on, you'll realise you'll end up at Tun Perak again as the road acts like a rectangular shaped roundabout. Either that or you travel along Jln Gajah Berang all the way up. Then start looking out for the 4D signage on the left.

Mid afternoon snack/dessert - Laksa & cendol at Donald & Lily (was Tan's Makanan Nyonya) at 31 Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock. At last, chubby hubby gets his decent cendol!

Dinner - Snacking at the local pasar malam behind baba house & jonker street. Dad loves shopping at the local pasar malam (full swing at 5pm) as fruits are sold cheaply & there are some home made food. Had fried chicken & chee chong fun (made on the spot), washed down with sugarcane juice.

Before we snacked at jonker st, we went to this small group of outdoor stalls on Jln Hang Kasturi which is just at the t-junction of Jln Kampung Pantai simply because we tried going there after dinner before but it wasn't there. What we love here is the tau huay halia (tau huay with ginger syrup) - yummy! Tau huay is very smooth, ginger syrup is welcoming. Dad had 2 bowls, he loves ginger. We had char kuay teow too. Pretty good. The drink/dessert stall is there at 12pm - 6pm mon - thurs, 12pm - 12am fri - sun. But the tau huay finishes earlier than that.

On jonker street pasar malam, we had herbal eggs near Jln Hang Kasturi, soon kueh & abacus beads from a middle-aged couple up ahead. Wanted to get the big pau that's larger than one's face but not around.

Day 5

Breakfast - Mee Ganja at opposite 383 Jln Tengkera. Have to say it was a disappointing experience. Firstly, it was under the "mee siam" catagory in the m'sian makansutra guide which i think is a printing mistake as it's actually mee goreng. So i was hankering for mee siam, not mee goreng. Then, the eatery was very crowded & the queue was snaking. When we got our food, it's really simple - just noodles & bean sprouts fried with sambal, personally, nothing fantastic. The locals seem to enjoy it, some even order 3 plates per person! Very cheap too - RM1 per plate, more if you order the fried egg.

Lunch - Was planning to try milk crabs at Fatso Restaurant recommended by the m'sian makansutra guide but simply couldn't find it! We found the address but was greeted with rolled down shutters & there wasn't any signage. Don't know if they've moved or closed for good. We were getting really hungry (actually made sure my stomach was empty!) so we decided to try Wok & Pan as recommended by herman1. Turned out to be a good move! We had the western-styled dishes. Dad had BBQ pork chops, Chubby hubby had beef medalions & mexican baked fish. The pork chops were so succulent & tasty, the best of the dishes! The baked fish is pan fried then with chopped tomato, peppers, etc, has a light tangy, slightly flavour, not bad, beef was good but paled in comparision to the pork chops. There are specials on the board (the baked fish was one) but ox tail stew, etc, no more. Our fault really as we arrived there so late.

Mid afternoon snack/dessert - what else but cendol + rojak from Donald & Lily's.....

Dinner - Hovered by the address of fatso restaurant again to see if it's really closed. Unfortunately, it was. So we decided to try the makan stalls at Malacca's Newton HC at Jln Bandar Hilir. Looked promising as it was popular with the locals. Heard the nonya mee goreng was good but just couldn't find it! Settled for the ikan bakar in a sour curry sauce. Not bad, had ladies fingers but slightly overcooked. Chicken wings tasted like what we have here. Popiah is with the egg ver of skin, nice. Char kway teow's good. There's a stall selling hot plate noodles beside the popiah stall - DO NOT ORDER! Awful! Saw yu char kway, butterfly, hum cheem peng freshly fried but not crispy. So if you're hankering for proper yck, hcp & butterfly, the one at mdm kings is best.

BTW, those who want home made pineapple tarts, walk slightly ahead & you'll see a little house with a sign "Bee Bee" above the door (9am - 11pm). The lady makes tarts every day. I suppose you can place an order or buy immediately. Not tried them (i make my own, wat.....) but apparently better than those sold in shops. Her hubby does not like it if you appear at their doorstep too late.

Drove to Jln Hang Kasturi for tau huay halia (addicted already) but ot was sold out! Funnily enough, when the lady saw us walking towards her stall, she immediately said no more tau huay! But she suggested tau huay drink with ginger syrup which turned out quite nice too.

Day 6

Breakfast - Our last day here so it's the mandatory shopping at Tesco's. That would mean breakfast at Juat Lye (371G, Jln Melor 2, Tmn Perinnggit Jaya - again, the makansutra guide do not give precise address). Breakfast fare like laksa, prawn mee, kaya toast, half boiled eggs & coffee are available. All pretty good.

Lunch - Claypot porridge & fried prawn wantan at Kedai Makanan dan Minuman Hip Huat (inside City Park), Setor A-7, City Park, Jalan Bunga Raya. YOu can now see it whilst travelling bunga raya as the disused building blocking it has been pulled down. Chubbu hubby's favourite porridge. Comes bubbling with bits of liver, pork, century egg, gizzard, jiu he, etc.

Before leaving, we dropped by Kim Huat Confectionery at 14, Jln Kg Kuli (off Lor Hang Jebat) to collect our order of freshly baked tau sar pia, yong chun xiang ping & a rectangle version of tau sar piah pastry with filling of the ycxp. Can only get it if you order. TSP is very good, has a very good sweet/salty combi. Bought 10 rolls of TSP, 5 rolls of YCXP & 5 rolls of combi piah.

Also, we dropped by Yong Sheng to fulfil mumsy's order of piahs. The wife cake (original) here is pretty good. Has a nice hint of orange peel. The shop along Jln melaka Raya 23 next to Bei Zhan restaurant is infested with young, eager-beaver promoters, all friendly & eager to push samples to you. Lots of other traditional biscuits & pastries like chicken biscuits, pong piah, etc.

Hi guys, am a newbie here but have been following your gastronomical stories here. I ama regular in Malacca too and would like to share what I know with you guys.

For a start the perennial favorites in Malacca, Laksa, mee siam and chendol. There is a place along Tranquerah Road which is behind a Peranakan House just after the Tengkera Mosque. It's called 486. Travelling from town towards Klebang (seaside) you will pass the Mosque on your right.Immediately after passing the Mosque is a lane (Lor Siantan I think). Enter this lane and the house is actually on your let, a very long Peranakan GHouse and the stalls are behind the house. They also sell some interesting kuih kuih depending on availability. Also must try the otah, it's very different from what we have in Singapore, as it does uses fish slices or solid fish cake with wonderful rempah.

Thanks and hope to contribute more in future.
