Tips to prolong your Rectifier.

Rectifier (Rec) and magneto (Mag) problems are common in new generation bike. Our carburetor SV is better off then the FI counterpart. FI bike require more electrical current to run. This problem cut across all brands and types of bikes. The mandatory law to keep headlight-on, contribute to shortening of electrical components. The IU unit is also zapping electrical current like a parricide. Our hot and humid climate is a great negative factor.

Well-known fact is, electronic/electric systems prematurely break down due to overheating. They are also design to run at certain running hours too. Bike owner can help to safe their Rec due to former related problem. As for the latter, gone case, buy new replacement.

This is what I have done to my SV650s and my electrical system is in factory condition for the last 6 ½ yrs.

1st, enhance the wire harness with addition insulation to prevent insulation breakdown due to wear and tear. (If there is an intermittent short circuit, both the Rec and Mag will be cooked.)

2nd, save electrical consumption to lower electrical load via the Rec and Mag. That will help to run the Rec at lower operating temperature, thus prolong its designed life. This is critical in our hot climate and traffic jams. There are more ways, but here are some big current hungry items.

SV650s comes with dual headlights. As for local riding, one headlight may be legal (pls check w LTA). However I had isolated one of them to save 45 watts. You can isolate one of the dual tail lights too, but that is a safety issue not worth the risk. However, lots of bike came with single bulb taillight. You decide.

However, night riding on NS hwy, reinstall the headlight socket to lit both are essential.

Upgrading of headlight to dual 55/65 watts is a step towards the devil and the deep blue sea. This exercised will add 20 watts to the electrical system. Sure, there are built in margin to support this extra load. But time will comes when the battery are not in pink of health. Extra currents drawn were to be wasted at the battery. On top, extra 20 watts on the headlight will be the best item to kill the Rec. Or the other way around, either way, you lose. The most likely place for this scenario to develop is on a long 10hrs ride to Hatyai. When endurance is the game. Weakest link will give way. Sometime bike, sometime rider.

IU unit is a pain. Up till this now, I don’t understand the logic of having one on bike. IU stick out like a sore thump on a beautiful bike and eat up current like a tapeworm. In the same category, it is like having to install an IU on the bicycle. Bikes don’t cause traffic jam, why IU?

Since day 1, my SV is IU free. That will save ?? watts to give my Rec a break.

There were two ways IU was installed. Fast and lazy way. Direct to the battery terminal. Or professional way was through the main switch (key-switch). The former way is guilty of battery killer and related Rec and Mag number 1 enemy. If you are oversea and park your bike for 1 month, you know what is the pain. The latter way are not as bad, but not Rec friendly either. For those must die die have a IU on their bike, the solution is to install a switch to the IU unit. Simply switch on when required when cash card is inserted and vise versa. That will help to save your Rec and pocket.

My estimate electrical saving is 50 to 60 watts on my SV650s

It save my pocket, hope to save your too.

PS

Electrical load sucked away HP. GP bike don’t have headlight to drain their HP.

Interesting engineering challenge for the coming F1 night race in SG. How each F1 team will solved their headlight’s power source issue. Hope news will be writing reports on this subject. Unlikely by a conventional way via Rac via generator. Perhaps an isolated battery system purely just to power the headlight.

To win races, every HP counts. F1 engineers will solve such trivial challenge. Lucky me. I don’t. :-)

Why I kept my SV for more then 10:thumb:yrs?

Its a light and fun bike:cool:.

Wow then we must pray hard that our rectifier wont spoilt.

Is there other alternative source for the rectifier? how about guan ho?

The more I ride my SV, the less I care about going to the annual bike show and looking at new,

or expensive, or exotic machinery. I'm continuing to mod my bike into exactly what I want it,

and enjoying every mile I put on it.

For rectifier, mine was fried about a year ago..

Have been using the GSXR750 rectifier ever since. Battery still in tip top condition
