The Rider.

The Rider rides not just for transport. He rides because he loves it. Because when he rides he knows a little bit more about himself. He finds out a little bit more about himself. He discovers himself. He meets and discovers his limitations, and is wiser and surer if he survives the meeting

The Rider rides because when he rides, he's in the pilot's seat. He might not be in control of everything, but when he rides he's responsible for everything. He hates not being in control off the ride, so pushes himself harder on it - tailing closer, weaving tighter, going faster. He craves the adrenaline that flows, but desires the bits of truth that emerge at moments.

Those around him tell him to slow down or it might kill him. But when he does so, it would have meant a part of him has died. The part of him that loves the wind, and cutting through it. The part of him made of hope, that still believes the world is a good place, that nothing bad could happen to him. The part of him that is rebellious, that is spirit, that sticks a finger to the world. For he loves the world and he hates it. He loves Life and his life - loves it like a coward in a corner - yet is driven to live it on the edges, at its most raw, by that very same love.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.

So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Dear NUS Riders,

I hope this message finds everyone well and in the pink of health. Due to a recent spate of accidents befalling fellow friends and acquaintances, I must share certain thoughts and observations.

For the record, I ride as a matter of lifestyle choice and have accepted the perils that come along with the activity. Attempt NOT to argue that riding a motorcycle is no more dangerous than driving a car. You shall be met with my harsh wall of silence and decide that I am stubborn and obstinate, so shall that be...

Cars vs Motorcycle = Protected vs Exposed

We shall flog the dead horse no longer.

Whilst riding/road skills are honed and sharpened through more time in/on the saddle, it is my wish that we as NUS riders have a more positive attitude towards this high risk activity. We are all products of the alleged premier educational institution of the country and I expect commensurate mature riding attitude.

I wish to share certain tiny tips that may or may not be beneficial to you. View them either as an exercise to know me better or to improve your own quality lifestyle of riding.

On idiot drivers

Riding in the car-packed city of Singapore is dangerous. The reality that our punishing hot humid weather dissuades riders from wearing protective gear is exacerbated by self-centered drivers who spare little thought for bikers.

Despite the urge to scream/yell/shout at errant drivers who;

(i) Lane change without signaling

(ii) Usage of mobile handphone

(iii) Tailgating

(iv) Road-hogging

(v) Reckless speeding (as opposed to safe speeding? Can of worms I say...)

Please DO NOT attempt to follow these drivers, match their speed or attempt to "teach them a lesson". If they were irresponsible drivers in the first place, what makes you think that they will take your rude gestures into consideration?

Rather, please avoid this category of drivers altogether and stay out of their way the moment you spot them. Try not to repeat the Lentor Rd Taxi vs Bike incident.

Vehicles with dings, dents or damages are indications of how the driver drives.

Taxis and goods vehicles need no further explanation.

The average lady driver (note key word) sending her children to school or running the afternoon errand - AVOID.

(This above point opens a separate debate altogether. Yet for the record, I am certainly not sexist. I do have the utmost respect and a great love for women :cheeky:)

On Motorcycle Maintenance

There was a time long ago when bike aesthetics mattered the world to me. Go ahead and do so if you have the spare cash, but DO NOT scrimp on basic maintenance for sake of that lovely paint-job. Brake failure is fatal ;-)

On Riding

Think about your past riding experiences and any close misses you had. How many of them were due to inappropriate following distances? Try to knock yourself off your "I am experienced and have been riding for years" pedestal and get back to the basics. Slowing down in anticipation for trouble at junctions and checking your blind spots will save your hide one day.

On Attire

ATGATT - All The Gear All The Time

A riding group I hang out with consisting of expatriates, professionals, doctors and lawyers believe in ATGATT. Personally I reckon its too much of a hassle.

Rather, pick riding gear that you are most likely to wear as often as possible. Choose not the most expensive, the coolest or the most branded, but that which is not uncomfortable to wear in our local climate. Protective gear protects you best when on you, not when growing mushrooms in your closet.

Jeans should be a minimal standard for leg protection. I myself have been victim to lapse of judgement (thank the higher beings that nothing happened) and have regretted it ever since. Leg scars are NOT pretty especially for you lady riders out there. Road abrasions DO NOT heal well.

Try to wear gloves all the time. Imagine missing out on exams or the difficulties in finishing a paper/assignment because you've got your hands/palms chuffed.

I'll go on the record at risk of getting flamed by fellow friends, but full-face is highly recommended at all times. Anything less is a compromise that you as a rider shall take personal responsibility for. Harley Davidson half-caps are for suicidal half-wits.

Conclusion

To end this sharing, or rant as some of you would reckon, we've got bright futures ahead of all of us. Don't throw it away due to a rash decision in the spur of the moment.

Ride Smart and Ride Safe ;-) :bounce:

I second this one. A lot of things done with your right hand ah... Kenna abrasion very difficult to do a lot of things. :bounce:

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.
