Ever wondered why tourers and racers always wear ear plugs? We see them at the highest levels of racing or adventure traveling, from Rossi to Ewan McGregor. Are earplugs meant only for the "elites" ?

Many people think that the noise inside a helmet comes from the engine or your super loud exhaust ( GPR ), but it's actually caused by the wind rushing past the helmet surface.

 

This hits your ears in 2 ways.

 

First it makes the helmet (and therefore the coconut within) resonate/vibrate, which indirectly impacts your inner ear. There is little you can do about this effect, which is thought to account for half of the overall hearing damage impact.

 

Second, as the air breaks up around the widest part of your helmet, it generates low-frequency sound. This you CAN control. In fact you'll be mad not to. The faster you go above 70km/h, the more the sound energy overpowers the tiny receptor hairs inside your ear.

 

The first signs of damage are the kind of ringing in your ears you get after stepping out of Ministry of Sound or Zouk after a couple of hours. This ringing (Tinnitus) is called a temporary threshold shift and you can recover completely so long as you don't expose your ears to that kinda harsh battering again. ( READ : WEAR EAR PLUGS )

 

The second signs of damage are harder to spot, but may likely to start with the inability to hear the silent soft parts of words ( the 'f', 'th' and 's' ). If you find yourself reaching this stage; Welcome to the club of permanent hearing loss.

 

Earphones used as substitutes for earplugs only work if they are the in-canal variant. The idea is to get a proper seal within the ear canal so that it blocks out the low-frequency sounds.

 

Normal earphones blasted at high volume so that you can hear your music over the loud wind noise is not going to help much with hearing protection. Go figure.
