was looking through at the manual and my carb manual to find the idle speed screw...

CANNOT FIND...

Totally NUBBED

Isn't yours the Mikuni carb? I know the previous owner put in one. There should be a flexible idle knob sticking out at the side, near the pushrod of the rear cylinder.

has anyone ever encountered a screeching sound while riding before, especially after wet weather? I was told by the dealer I got the bike from that it's due to the rain and the belt is wet or something, and that it'll disappear after a while of riding. Im not very convinced though. :giddy:

Its a y2k sportster 883, mileage abt 40k km. Just curious if there's any other reason for the screeching sound, any help's appreciated..

cheers!

hmmmm... wet brakes? belt unlikely... maybe a whining sound from belt.. especially when new n tight... but screechin sound? brakes usually.... so check ur pads n rotors...

Have you identified where the sound is coming from? I only know of two that happened to be before. One is brakes. Usually after wet weather. Pumping the brakes a few times will get the water out. My mech told me that the rear brakes thingy (can't member what) is situated at the bottom of the bike and thus more exposed to water going in and harder to drain out.

Another is could be brake dust. Just give it a blow job ;P

3rd is the forks. But I got a squeaking sound instead. Again usually after rain so could be sealant wearing out and water going in.

Will be quite an effort trying to find the source of the sound over the loud pipes but that's the fun of it :)

the sound only comes when the bike is moving, and im quite sure its not the brakes. Most likely from belt. Hmm.. its not squeaking, so not from fork, and not the screech sound from brakes (i know that sound from my phantom)

And the screeching sound is well above the exhaust note, so its pretty irritating. In fact the screeching is heard first before the pipe! (running on state 49's)

Going back to dealer tomorrow, hopefully it'll be rectified then.

Thanks all for the input! :cheeky:

- hi .

- I get that too with my Heritage Softail.

- ride it a bit and it goes away. Probably water & belt.

ahh.. ok.. currently ridden about 100km since the sound. It's still there. Can i know roughly the distance you covered before it went away?

Hope Im not being paranoid but its quite disturbing having an unwelcome note accompanying the melody of the pipes.

- sorry to say , but you probably have a problem somewhere.

- mine usually screeches when I ride her just after her bath. But a

couple of turns around the housing estate and she's quiet by then.

- play with the front/rear brakes , and see whether the sound goes

away.

- cheers

Maybe, it's also an option to contact the dealership and set an appointment to let the qualified technicians have a check-up on it too...Just a suggestion bros....

it's always good if you are riding a new bike to go back to the dealership because of the warranty.

its a y2k registered bike, so warranty disappeared years ago :) Currently checking with ah yee though

How'd you manage to live with that sound for 1000 km?! I dont think im as patient as you, hahah. Ill get the alignment and tensions checked as you suggested. But just curious why (most?) other riders dont seem to experience this.. unless its really a belt problem.

thanks for the input
