For the amount of work done to that "bike", I think it deserves that price tag. Only thing is the COE is due next year.

Hi there guys

I used to hang around in the forum a little when i owned a red monster 400 last year with GPR pipes. Due to having to work overseas in australia for about a year i sold it off and only just returned recently. I ended up being the guy that bought motocafe's highly customised and very very beautiful monster 900.

I was smitten with that bike since before i left for australia when i met him briefly and saw it in the flesh at michael's shop. When he started selling it i was about a month away from returning and lucky me, it was still for sale when i returned, and the rest is history.

I've been riding it for about a week now and am really enjoying it. Being laid up for so long there were some initial niggles like a leaky rubber seal in the gearbox which required a replacement before the clutch would function (required me to ride a fair distance to KC when it suddenly conked out. clutchless up/downshifts are very painful to do!!). Then i had to adjust the front end to be a little softer (it was just too hard/jumpy for riding on anything but perfectly level road, the suspension setup was very track-oriented) and stiffen the back to minimise lift during heavy acceleration particularly at highway speeds when the bike feels like its weightless forward of the engine (i suppose the light 996 wheels have a huge part to play in causing this). But mechanically overall the bike is just so well maintained and taken care of its almost unbelievable

I kinda considered myself as buying a work of art when i got this bike. Motocafe's passion when he talked about the bike to me was obvious and very infectious especially for a fella like me. So much has been done but i suppose i could do my part and make a few mods myself over time. I almost feel a sense of duty to do so. I'm currently saving up for billet clutch covers/springs, a belly pan, and am really racking my brains on how to pull off an exhaust upgrade on this thing. Its still on the stock 748 pipes, and although powdercoated black and very beautiful, the sound is really anaemic and conflicts totally with it's character. I don't suppose anyone knows where i can get some second hand 748 termigs. i've been searching everywhere for an option but no luck at this point. My only best bet at this point is to get another stock set of pipes and modify the current set with race baffles (found on ebay for about 130USD) so i get some more sound and performance out of it. Cheap & easy solution but not ideal by any means.

In the long term i'd like to repaint the bike to something similar to the race-stripe monster S2R/S4R scheme but that can come much later.

Thought i'd include some pics to show some of the little things about the bike which appealed to me so much. I'll try to attend a meetup if i'm free if you guys want to see it in person

This pic shows the how the tail end had to be bent to accomodate the pipes. you can see the metal plate below with the little caps that go on the end portions of the frame sticking out the bike. Thats attention to detail!

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/7794/dsc00010nh5.th.jpg

This is a pic of the console. I love how the same key works on everything! the ignition, the fuel tank (even though the fuel tank cap looks aftermarket), and especially the (very neat) helmet lock on the handlebar. There is even a headlight switch installed so i can turn off the headlights whenever i want

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4833/dsc00013rq4.th.jpg

Just a pic of the front setup with the 996 forks brakes and wheel. I love the front fender especially, it protects the forks from stone chips, it should be standard on all monsters

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/3039/dsc00016fc2.th.jpg

Probably my favourite angle to view the bike from. Absolutely love the custom exhaust headers and the 996 single sided swingarm/wheel.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/7818/dsc00023hz2.th.jpg

I guess now it's my turn to take care of this beauty. Don't expect to see this bike for sale anytime soon, if EVER :). If there was ever such a thing as a keeper, this bike would be it. Even if one day it really conked out so badly that it couldnt be fixed i'd probably just deregister it and put it on display in my living room or something LOL. Seriously big props should go out to motocafe (Daniel). The kind of work he did with this bike is just legendary and a humble fan like me is just floored. The bike world needs more people like him:thumb: :thumb:

Hi guys. Hope someone can help. Own a 9-year old M400 and the battery has gone flat because I seldome ride it. Thinking of re-charging it but don't know how. Can someone please give me step-by-step instructions? Also, been reading that people use the Vanson brand or CTEK brand of charges. Any comments on these brands?

Hiyah blackreplica,

Thanks for the compliments. Gratifying to see that you are enjoying the bike. Warms my heart to see that it is in good hands.

BTW, I left the stickers at Kallang Cycle so you can collect them anytime. They will go really well with your helmet. Also, they will come in handy when you respray the bike.

As for the exhaust, your best option is eBay for used Termis. That's where the originals came from also. It's a bit of a lottery with eBay... and patience.

Cheers.

Thanks a lot man, I was planning to swinging by to KC sometime soon to get a used ERP unit from Mike anyway so I'll pick up the stickers then. Really love the 'Monster 996' Decal you designed.

You're right about ebay, very hard to find the stuff I want i.e. a cheap set of good pipes LOL. 90% of those jokers don't even ship outside of the US. The only other 2 options are to get a brand new set (way too expensive) locally or from motowheels or to save the $$$ altogether and modify the current set of cans with this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ducati-748-916-996-998-Exhaust-Baffle-Kit-Baffles_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35619QQihZ006QQitemZ160187517331QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW and swap the pipes out to original 748s come inspection time. Its a really cheap mod and will give me some satisfaction while i hunt down those termigs on my own sweet time.

Incidentally, Mike told me you have a lot of 'lobang' when it comes to sourcing stuff, and seeing how you made this monster i most definitely agree, so do give me a call or sms if you ever happen to see some cheap aftermarket pipes somewhere lying around and for sale! :) :)

The way to get around ebayers who do not ship outside of US is to register with VPost and use their US mailing address. So they ship the item to VPost USA and VPost deliver to my doorstep. Not cheap but you get what you need; I got a lot of my stuff that way.

Actually, the exhaust baffle kit seems like a good alternative. From what I can see this seem to replicate the internals of Termis plus retains the stock look. And if the noise level is too loud, fabricate a 'noise killer' insert - quite simple to do really. In fact, this was in my mind but I never got around to doing it.

Dood, try jumpstart cable kit from a car. Only need to connect the alligator cables. Then ride normally around the block a few times. If your alternator is working it should charge by itself. Make sure your battery fluid is topped up as well(wet cell). Good luck..

yungcheng: bro, when i leave the bike unattended for weeks on end, my batt goes flat too (my previous mito)...i usually push start it on 2nd or 3rd gear(saves e trouble of needing a car to jumpstart)... then i ride ard e block with high revs, as hann mentioned, yr alternator should charge it enough for e nxt electric start. but if u do ride out, make sure u ride relatively harder in higher revs to fully recharge yr batt.

blackreplica: yea still riding the same monster.haha. i actually sold it 2 yrs back, but just took it over again from e buyer.haha.

Guys, what if I disconnect the wires from the battery? Will the battery still go flat? Let's say .. for 1 week?

I generally disconnect my wires to my batt if I'm away for more than a week. The whole idea here is not coming back and push starting the bike. It's such a pain and the best part is when you do reconnect it, the bike fires up like normal.

Got a question for you monster experts. Something i've been wondering for quite a while now

Do any of you guys notice a power 'flat spot' at very low revs? It is most pronounced when moving off from a standstill. If you apply medium-to-low throttle input and try to move off at a relaxed pace the bike kind of chokes a bit and there is an obvious sluggishness for about a split second before the revs enter the lower midrange when the power comes in. I can't say at what particular rev this flat spot occurs as i don't have a tacho on the monsters that I have ridden, but the rpm is definitely low, probably below 3000rpm. But its a problem almost identical on both my older monster 400 and this 900 which leads me to think its not a problem unique to my bike, but to monsters in general

When doing a slightly more aggressive launch the flat spot is bypassed since the revs stay high from moving off and you're grinding the hell out of the clutch. But aggresive launching from traffic lights is not my riding style unless I'm intent on going nuts. Most of the time its just go slow and shift early. Attempting a smooth low rev launch is simply not possible without encountering that flat spot.

When i owned my old 400 and complained to Mike about the flat spot he told me a 400 is a slow bike and i couldn't expect much. Made sense at the time, but now that i'm getting a similar thing on the 900, i'm really starting to wonder.

I tried searching high and low on ducatimonster.org but the closest i could find to a cause was gearing. The discussions there seemed to imply this problem came about from the stock sprocket setup of 15/38 which apparently got solved from a 14/40 combo but both my old monster 400 and monster 900 are already on 14T fronts and 44T for the rear of the 400 and currently 41T on the 900. The problem is still there. I've noticed many people here experiencing this same problem, seen it mentioned a few times all over, including here, i was wondering if a solution exists. If not i may just go ahead with a 42-44T rear sprocket on the 900 and see if that works but somehow i don't think this is the solution

If anyone has any suggestions i'm all ears

P.S do any of you have suggestions on a good sprocket size combo for the m900 for mostly city riding with good acceleration from standstill? My fastest (and i rarely ever go this fast except for very short bursts) typical highway cruise speed is 140kmh. Typically i cruise at 100-120kmh depending on traffic conditions. As long as the sprocket combo allows my bike to cruise comfortably at 150-160kmh (in case i decide to go touring) without any risk of over-rev, i'm happy.
