Bolt cutters aren't very expensive around $10, so that isn't very surprising to be honest.

Not about the price. Some cutter size quite big :)

[Edited: my bad, reading comprehension failed me. I agree with your opinion of those who wear expensive but open-face helmets. :)]

If you want to wear a full-face, you've got to carry it or store it in a large enough box. I wouldn't leave mine on the bike for the same reasons mentioned above.

Agreed but I shouldn't not have called them stupid posers because in my opinion its a hindrance for everyday usage, their money their decisions, maybe slip of the tongue, for that I apologise. I use open face because its convenient but I know very well how they are less safe than full faces irregardless of brand, still better than those scooter helmets, I feel naked when I had to use them.

Gotta love company carparks, free parking and almost zero chances of theft. Good for storing

Well, it was harsh, but you certainly gave those wearing expensive open-faces something to think about. Completely in agreement with you that even the best-made and costliest open-face isn't going to protect you the same way that a decent full-face helmet will.

But back to the topic: given how easy it is for a helmet to be stolen off a bike, the safest options are to either carry it with you or lock it in a box. That seems the be the consensus here.

Well if got box, lock in the box the best, if cannot see, the chances are much less, if you want to hang it, park in a well lit and high traffic area like Mustafa. Places like Seah Im, Orchard Towers and Geylang at night, people will attempt to steal your helmet, been through before from cracked fairing cuz some dipsh!t tried to pry open the seat to straps being cut...well its easy n cheap to make a new strap at Regina.

Funny thing is both are relatively cheap helmets, maybe because they are new...should have used scratched up helmets instead.

Just wondering if one is to keep his expensive FF in the top box, but was already targeted by some thief to break the lock of the box to steal the helmet, then is that guy suay or what?

To me. Helmet on chain lock is safer than helmet in box. Expert can break open a box within 1 min. Its common to have thieves coming with screw drivers to break top box than to have chain cutter to snap helmet chain lock

get a box to lock helmet inside box, if not, buy a fullface and lock it by looping your cable lock through it.... get a good quality cable lock. Never lock your helmet by the strap unless u using a cheapo helmet and dun mind loosing it. I too am someone who would spend money on a good fullface helmet but detest the idea of walking around with a helmet in my hand. I know some ppl do get an expensive flashy helmet to walk around with... maybe its like girls buying LVs and Guccis so they walk around parading it to everyone. Personally i think its very insecure for a guy to show such vanity n it does show a lack of personality except that u might be some racer wannabe (unless u really are a well known racer who competes in the GP or something then i have nothing to say)

Anyway I've locked my fullface $600 arai by using a cable lock and i've parked at clarke quay, shopping centers in town, newton, hdb carparks etc etc, the most i see is the helmet has been moved when i came back to the bike. If it was a thief he must have thought it through cos its chained to the mainframe and the only way to get to it is by using a huge bolt cutter. So unless he walks around with a very large and conspicuous bolt cutter and manage to not arouse suspicion of the public then i guess he deserves to steal my helmet. Anyway i always try to park at carparks where there are alot of ppl walking pass whenever i lock my helmet this way. Cheers

If I'm a racer, that helmet would be free but sponsors won't let me wear it outside of a race.

can i just share something, especially with regards to cases of attempted theft at the locations mentioned.

thieves dun just target helmets which are expensive or nice for their own use or to sell (used/stolen helmets dun really sell anyway).

you see, there are bikers who go around pick up chicks (whether prostitute or clubber they just met), and then because they dun have a spare helmet for pillion, they steal a helmet for their 'pick-up girl'. this means they target helmets easiest to cut, even if the d-ring gets damaged. they're not doing it for the safety of their pillion, they're doing it to avoid being stopped by TP.

so dun assume your helmet cheap or battered or worn it wont get targeted so no need secure properly. sure, you might not feel pain from cheap or worn out helmet being stolen, but still big inconvenience when these 'players' take for their pick-ups.

therefore, cable or bicycle lock is the answer. these thieves want the easiest to cut and go. worse is they attempt to burn off the strap by using a lighter; this is precisely how many cases of burning bikes started.

one look at the metal cable and they will look elsewhere, coz not convenient and quick to cut.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

so is there a cheapo helmet that has good air intake ? When it rains the air vents can really shut and not have water going in?

I've been locking my helmet at open air car parks for 1-2 hours each time. I use a cable lock through the chin bar around the handlebar as most guys here do. So far, so good. Its a mid range helmet but I agree that it would be a pain if it was taken. I usually try to park in more high human traffic areas so thieves will think twice before doing anything.

I simply leave my 40 bucks open face helmet on my bike. Been doing that for 2 years. Guess its just too cheapo and ugly for any bugger to even take it.

Usually those who steal is people who last min need to pillion but no helmet. So they just take any helmet they can find and use.

They steal because they neglect to think about the consequences.

I do the same, much better than locking at the D-rings where they can get cut. Cable lock through the chin bar is the best method, but this means you can't close the visor and if you leave it in the open when it rains = GG. =(

You can use cheap helmet cover for this. Will not get the water in directly. Also prevents thief from looking what helmet you have without opening the cover.
