is full synthetic = 100% synthetic? NO, its not.

 

two decades ago, mobil vs castro, http://www.syntheticsbestoil.com/mobil.htm .

this leads til today label full synthetic oil (group 3+) r mineral stock based oil with refine filtration method.

 

oil label with PAO (group 4), ester or poly-esters (group 5) r true 100% synthetic.

dun band on full synthetic r true 100% synthetic oil.

anyway, only use oil with label API 'SG', 'SH' or JASO 'MA', these r recommended for motorcycle with wet clutch.

API 'SJ', 'SL', 'SM' and above r mostly for external clutch like ducati or cars.

 

in Germany, the labeling is slightly different. base oil made from hydrocracking / isodewaxing / isomerized are called "Synthetic Technology" while polyalphaolefin and some ester oil is called "Full Synthetic". i not sure is it the case for this Schnell oil since it is from Germany but my guess is it is a group III oil.

 

other then some countries in Europe, the word synthetic is just a marketing term with no real indication of it performance. as the article posted by stsoh pointed out, it is more about paying the price of more expensive oil for something cheaper. in the States, group III oil can be really cheap although not that it is inferior to other base oils hence it is rather meaningless to argue over "real or fake" other then educational interest. for the price of Schenll, i don't think one can fault it much.

 

do note not all Group III oil is so call "fake synthetic" as most people happily think so. Shell GTL base oil is group III and one could argue that it is the real stuff.
