Manager riding m-cycle to cut fuel bill

 

PETALING JAYA: Rising petrol prices have forced David Lim to ride a motorcycle instead of cruising around in his Toyota Unser.

 

The 45-year-old business manager sold his Proton Waja earlier this year, opting instead for a used Honda 70cc two-wheeler.

 

“A motorcycle saves time and fuel when I need to go and buy groceries or move around the neighbourhood,” said Lim, who resides in Subang Jaya.

 

The father of three children aged between nine and 15 said his monthly family income was in the RM5,000 to RM6,000 bracket.

 

 

MAKING CHANGES: Radhakrishnan, Kogiladany and their children now spend more time at home in Segambut during the weekends to save costs.

But he lamented that the rising prices of petrol and other necessities like fresh food have affected his family’s purchasing power.

 

“On weekends, we used to shop and eat at shopping complexes and theme parks. We now go out for such family activities only once a month,'' he said, adding that he had also reduced spending on items like new clothing.

 

To save on expenses, Lim said his children had stopped taking the school bus and were car-pooling with neighbours and relatives to get to school.

 

Jimmy Chin is another case in study on how people are coping with fuel price increases.

 

Chin, who has a 10-year-old son, prefers to use his Honda EX5 100cc motorcycle instead of his six-year-old Proton Wira 1500cc these days.

 

 

“I can save at least RM300 on my petrol bill every month by using my motorcycle,” said the 40-year-old electrical goods salesman.

 

Chin, who lives in an apartment in Setapak, said he had also reduced the number of visits to his in-laws’ home in Dengkil.

 

“We used to go to Dengkil every fortnight. Now, we go only once a month,” said Chin, who is also a part-time insurance salesman.

 

“My wife is a part-time baby-sitter. In these times, we need to have more than one job. Otherwise, how to survive?” asked Chin, whose family's monthly income works out to about RM3,500.

 

Despite his wife and him having taken on additional responsibilities, Chin said it was still difficult coping with a myriad of fixed monthly expenses, such as apartment maintenance charges, housing and car loan repayments, toll charges, insurance payments, and tuition fees for his children.

 

Several other families interviewed said they were also in a similar predicament due to the increased cost of living.

 

Babysitter Siti Rohaya Mahat's and her husband Mohd Zulkipli Mohd Razlan's account was even more heart-tugging – together they earn RM1,400 to support themselves and four children aged between five and 14.

 

Zulkipli, 39, is a part-time motorcycle despatch rider while Siti Rohaya sells nasi lemak to friends to earn extra money.

 

“Everything is so expensive now. Two years ago, 30 chicken eggs cost about RM5, now I have to pay more than RM6.

 

“We have adjusted by serving our children half an egg each at breakfast,” said Siti Rohaya, 33, who lives in a low-cost apartment in Damansara Damai.

 

The family's joy of having settled the car loan for their used Mitsubishi Lancer has been short-lived what with the increase in fuel prices.

 

“We hardly use the car to go out these days,'' said Siti Rohaya.

 

Clerk Radhakrishnan Bhafkaran and wife Kogiladany Ramasamy, an administration assistant, also spoke of tough times for them and their four children, despite a combined monthly income of about RM5,000.

 

The 49-year-old Radhakrishnan said he was considering various means to overcome their tight financial situation.

 

“I am thinking of asking for a five-year extension on my housing loan to reduce the monthly payments. To save on petrol, and parking and highway toll charges, we go out less often during weekends,” said Radhakrishnan, who lives in an apartment in Segambut.

 

“I hope that the Government will look into the escalating prices of consumer goods and daily necessities. Reducing income tax and car insurance charges will also be a big help.''
