It's a misomer that life in the military MUST be better than civilian life. i don't dispute that the money is stable and good, relatively speaking. But what u don't see is the behind the scene sloughing. i was once in a flt where day shifts meant having to work even on Suns and night shifts meant stopping work at around 0300hrs.

Ever tried having to wake up at 0300hrs to answer a call and having then to prepare for a presentation to the base commander at 0600hrs so that he can face the head honchos at 0800? Many many such experiences. But let's face it, the private sector is just the same.

Most people who've left complain of a thousand and one things. But i have encountered my fair share of ex-regulars back on ICT who actually wished that they had not left in the first place.

It all boils down to the person's attitude. i had a number of men who were pursuing further studies. Some had very poor work attitude, for such people, nothing less than throwing the book at them would suffice. For those who had positive attitude, i was prepared to give and take, a matter of you scratch my back and i'll scratch yours.

Being given time-off / flexibility for non-sponsored activities is a privilege, not an entitlement.

Ultimately, the section / flight / squadron does not rotate around you. There are instances where it is not possible for the OC / OIC / WOs to fulfill each and every aspirations. You can choose to sulk and drag your feet for the next umpteen years or you can choose to take life's obstacles positively.

Comparing just makes life tougher, there will always be someone better off than you. Conversely, there will always be someone whose's worse off.

No lah.....you sign, still need to process your posting orders. That's your official enlistment into RSAF....so can say now you're half of us, ha ha..... Wat's the rush??? Enjoy your BMT first as a normal recruit instead of a "regular" recruit. Only makes your nsf sergeant red eye, as soon after you finished BMT, his pay will be peanuts to yours.

I kanna suan by my corporal when he saw my posting orders. I signed on when BMT about to complete. Not even my Section OIC knows. He only knew almost 75% of us went for the career talk in CMPB. At the end of day, only 2 bugger signed on.

Oh, a "regular" recruit in the other platoon always kana suan and sadly, sometimes kana aimed as he cannot pass his running for Ippt.

But this is my time lah, now I have no idea and also not really interested to listen to my juniors complaining about their BMT which is nothing to "old birds" like us then :sian:

S*hit can and will happen.

Anyway I know of some guys who are working on Saturdays and Sundays in support of the NDP. But they will be compensated with days off when the need is over.

NDP leh... cannot afford to fail one. Our neighbours are watching and kaypohing. You claim you going to have a flypast display of X number of aircraft... you better show the numbers.

Last year our neighbor show their smoky MIG 29 for their National day. Also at the F1 GP opening.. only 5 MIGs were flying.

What happened to their F18 Hornets??? Broke ###### or what??

When a person signs on. He is expected to be on call 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. That's the difference between being in the private sector and the public sector, notably so in the armed forces.

Nonetheless, if he had had to work beyond what would be considered reasonable working hours as stipulated in the Ministry of Manpower's guidelines, he can then expect to be compensated with time-off / off-in-lieu during lull periods.

To demand that compensation must come immediately when the tempo is high is unreasonable to say the least, because he would probably not be the only person who had to work overtime. If the entire section / flt were to adopt this "me-first" mentality, wouldn't the flt have to close down?

If your friend feels that the management is being unreasonable, he can always bring it up to the CO. The CO has a "Dear CO" email account which is for personnel to being up issues which they do not wish or can't highlight to their immediate superiors. Failing that he can always bring the issue to the attention of Head Air Logistics who has a similar acct.

The Air Force is different from the other services because the equipment readability / servicability is wholly dependent on the men. Any and all issues are treated importantly.

Not highlighting the issue because of the perception that "it's not impt, no one will care" etc is different from highlighting it to no avail, which i believe is the case here.

As mentioned previously, being given time-off for non-sponsored activities is a privilege. Having signed-on, it is expected to for a person to be fully committed to his work. He can pursue other activities outside his working hours. But if needed, he is expected to return to his duties.

gloss is $1800 but it is COMPULSORY to work minimum 100hrs OT, if each hr OT is paid $15, then 100 hr = 1.5k

1.5k + 1.8k = 3.3k

Basically in STae, it's doing the same job, under the same boss, but in a different uniform.

The pay's good, if you go for OT. OK when you're young and vibrant, but when age sets in...get what i'm trying to imply?

DG, you hit the nail on the head.

A guy gets pissed off with the RSAF and leaves for the civilian world. Do you think he will say that it was a big mistake for him to leave, even it if really was??

Even if he was earning a lesser pay and working longer hours... will he say to the junior regulars that it was a mistake to leave?? Hell, no.

It is a pride thing. Not all are that honest enough to tell the truth.

Attitude is everything. Period.

The trouble with a majority of the new X Box generation of people is the bloody attitude. Only a handful will come in with the right attitude.

The right attitude?? The craving to learn and master the weapon platforms.

Ask the new guys why they join the RSAF... most will answer you... for money lor.

They did not join coz they loved aircraft. They did not join because they love engineering stuff and fixing machinery.

Yep, that is the majority of the kind of people that are joining the RSAF today. Tell me lah... how can you be good at something when you are not interested in it in the first place??? Work and responsibility don't want.

Seven girlfriends name and telephone numbers can remember, no matter how drunk, but when I asked to name the 7 components that make up a hydraulic system... cannot remember even when totally sober.

Bottomline is... it is a matter of interest and attitude.

Success is not something you pursue. Its like chasing a butterfly, you cant quite catch it. Success is something you attract by the person you become.
