Does LTA allow changing the headlights on a motorcycle? Let's say I find the headlights on a bike ugly, and I want to change it to a different shape, say from round to Streetfighter design, which I find more aggressive and nicer.

But a quick check on LTA's website seem to indicate that changing headlights is not allowed. But it specifically mentions HID lights. What if the new lights I'm changing to is not HID, but just regular halogen lights. I only want to change the look of the headlights, not to make it brighter. Is it allowed?

The general consensus is same item to same item is ok, other than frame and engine. To add on something, like windshield, still ok if it doesn't affect your bike (negatively) and other road user in normal and in accident situation. To change to a different part, like horns, like to check with authorities cos some are banned.

Headlight is a mix btw point 1 & 3, so I also dun know the answer.

Call them if in doubt. Check also with the inspection centre.

this is interesting topic, just the other night, i was riding on expressway and i saw one Z1000 overtook me, i saw his headlight beaming on the road, one look at the way the beam of light shine on the ground, can tell that definitely not OEM headlight, :/ LTA seriously have too many rules on vehicles

ya, lots of illegal light mods in vehicles. Not just bikes, but lots of cars too. They are blinding at night.

legal, with conditions.

the LTA website that you saw is about headlight bulb, thats where you say HID or white light with coloured tint.

your mod here is headlight housing. and further, it does not directly affect the performance characteristics (such as engine mod or exhaust or brakes or turbo that kind) and therefore purely aesthetic in nature. hence, aesthetic mods are all allowed provided they do not extend the bike's dimensions. example, your streetfighter headlight not the kind that somehow portrude very far forward from stock. or you know some choppers use monkey bars that are much higher than stock until rider show hairy armpit. those kind are illegal because they make the bike longer/wider/taller than original. but if your streetfighter housing is not that kind, yes legal.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

I won't say it's legal by LTA, as LTA rules are very rigid to the point of ridiculous. The thumb of rule is they like to use is "factory fitted".

For bulbs, the rule is this:

"Replacement bulbs must be of a design recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Using a higher wattage bulb may increase the risk of fire because of a greater current being drawn to power these lamps. Therefore, these types of bulbs are not allowed."

For headlight housing I'm not sure because you probably need to prove that the new housing is using back the manufacturer recommended bulb.

Coming from drz background where many people change to Ktm headlights. I can understand LTAs regulation in this aspect. I owned a used drz with Ktm lights and the light throw was **** at night. Not visible and throwing light to the sky instead of the ground. I changed it back to the origins after awhile. And it wasn't easy to get rid of that functionless Ktm light due to people going for cosmetic purposes solely.

So yes LTAs regulation for lighting is restrictive to the point where some find is intrusive, but pass your own conscience, after u change your whole headlight assembly for cosmetic purposes, does it intrude the functional aspects of the originally designed light? It is your own safety afterall.

A lot of drivers are getting pissed with adventure bikes who use their fog lamp during city riding shining dead into their rear view mirror due to inappropriate light throw..

Just my opinion..

Ride fast..ride safe..don't crash...

Phillip Econo vision for daily ride...

Phillip Xtreme vision for NSW for increase brightness.

Both also can pass LTA :)

Both are brighter than original :)

For every fully lit bike, there are probably a dozen cars with HID and foglights blazing on singapore road; tailgating other road users and trying to intimidate them to get out of the way.

As much as I can understand where you're coming from, lights are a part of essential items for safety.. Therefore the stringent to the letter LTA might have a beef with any modifications to it no matter how small..

I owned a used drz with Ktm lights that are supposedly nicer but changed it back to stock due to the Ktm one did not function like it's supposed to..

Amazing how fast it was to get rid of that aftermarket ones.. So many people looking for it..

Yes because manufacturers test that they aren't a bother to other driver at all times.. Hid lights are required to have a balancer device on a car so that when the car is pointing upwards due to weight in the car the lights will aim lower to avoid pointing towards the car coming the opposite direction. When it's installed by a shop, who knows where does the HID light actually points to?
