changing of the gears may seem weird for a start as we are taught to kick the gears in schools....but after a while, you should be able to get the grips on it....it's the unique and fun part of riding a vintage vespa....

As for the keys, don't think it is possible to have a all in one key for vespa like the modern bikes...cos all using different locks....

most shops do the number plate for you....what kinda number plate are you looking at? front or back?

price ranges between $10 to $30 (i think)....

pls note that there are some that are not legal and you might get fine for it....BTW why do you need to change the number plate? plate cracked or??

if it is still in good condition, you might as well spend the money on a good tire to start off with since you mentioned that your tires are wearing out soon....

the number plates for the back are the old sort...

the ones with the protruding numbers..

not the new sort with printed on numbers...

and the numbers are starting to fall of i think..

just wondering mainly...

no rush to get it changed....

been reading vespamaintenance.com & i am interested in trying out the stuff they're doing like changing clutch cable, tyres, decoking engine etc....

but scared to do alone....if anything goes wrong then got no kaki to help..

ahahaha..

seems that quite a few tools are required...

i know there's previous posts on the essential to have on the bike...

maybe i'll stock up on the essential when i get my next paycheck...:faint:

Cephelix... re: the keys...

It depends how old your PX is

Does the key for the ignition also lock the handlebars? or do you have a separate key for locking the hanlebar??

On a new PX, one key operates glovebox, seat and ignition/handlebarlock....

Still need another one for the bloody rear box though! Arghhhh.

Yeah and like gweester said... ride around for a bit first (after getting service done)... Put new tyres on ASAP, Battalax, or Hoop are tries and tested by the gang here and are MILES better than the stock ones....your scoot should be safe enough after this. When you've got a feel for it, then you'll know what you want to change first.

You coming along to the meetup?? If so, I'll be able to show you some of the mods you're interested in.

If it were me, I'd save up for the disc brake first though.... Stopping well = safety!

On the above point... try getting some other quotes from other shops.

Depending on the age of your px (if newer then old speedo can be reused) you'll need to change the fok, wheel hub and handlebars (both top and bottom piece) Make sure you're being quoted a price to get everything done yeah!, not just for parts.

Buy fully synthetic oil, Esso or Castrol... don't save on cheap 2T....

Save money on petrol though! Your stock PX will be happiest on 92 octane... trust me on this! (I'll explain the science at the meetup if you're thinking that higher octane = better, a nasty marking ploy by petrochemical conglomerate W***kers."

Enjoy

Oh and post some pics!!!!

yeap..will probably change the tyres once i get my next paycheck.pics will be posted soon...

no chance to take any since i had my vespa only a few hrs before i spoiled it....

i think the keys for the handlebar lock n ignition are different but i could be mistaken.

what if they are the same?any difference?

as for the meetup, whe's the date?

and all the locations i dont know how to get to..

my scoot uses an alloy block & piston..

that's what my brother said he did to the bike...

and he emptied out the exhaust....

It seems that the meetup is going to be at the prata place on Evans road. Do a search on streetdirectory.com... the place is just oposite a big running track which used to be part of NIE.

Cephelix... now that you mention that you've got an alloy block... I really think we should meetup... I don't want you having a piston jam due to incoreect carb jetting!

I'll bring my tools

yesh~ do join us cephelix, the more the merrier. Anyone else game for it?

want to learn a thing or two from sharpey too =) hiak hiak interested in how your project scoot is coming along too, should be quite juicy stories. all the tough labour and the sense of achievement

Posted

tentatively the meet up should be in mid jan....venue should be the prata plc opposite the former NIE....

Check out the thread to be posted on the meetup...

ahhh....so you do have a alloy block kit on your scoots....

the carb setting is VERY important (probably life and death for your scoots)...so probably you could get some help during the meetup...

Even if you do not know how to go, you can meet one of us who can lead you there....i live rather near that prata place so i could help you on the directions or even meet up with you at holland V before we head down....

so probably your priority would be the following:

Servicing - they do general service on your scoots like wash and tune carbs, de-carbonise your piston, change engine oil, checking of cables and brake pads, etc.....should be about $40 or so....

Tire - Battalax is about S$35 each (you can do the changing yourself to save on the few bucks of labour...)

Disk Brake if faulty....

hmmmm...general servicing they did..

but not exactly sure what they do for the servicing..

must ask...

today collecting bike....

i'll leave the carb settings to you guys cos i still have no idea how to adjust...

still don't have proper tools yet...

and my scoot has no disc brake, only drum brake....

for the keys, i have previously 3 keys for my scoots...

1 for the ignition and handlelock

1 for the side box

1 for the spare tire lock

hassle as it may be, these keys are pretty small....but if possible, do keep another set as spares just in case....
