Today, I went to buy oil filter for my Revo at Ah Boy and was given KN-204 (K&N oil filter). When I went home to check K&N website, the filter indicated for my bike usage is KN-303!

Upon inspection, the filter i received was slightly shorter in length than my original Honda filter. and true enough, the specs of KN-303 is indeed slightly longer than KN-204. The thread fits though, and installs comfortably on my bike.

I have written to K&N support, and awaiting their reply.

I wonder if other owners here have similar experiences with K&N oil filters. I am worried that this may cause damage due to incompatibility issues. :dot::dot:

The difference is size and the bypass valve opening pressure..if i'm not wrong the kn-303 needs 2psi opening more than the kn-204..

Smaller filter size also means you will have to replace it earlier.

This is the official reply from K&N:

The two filters are identical other than their length - which differs by 10mm. The only difference why they produce these 2 filters is for fitting reasons, as some motorcycles have tight spaces. For CB400, there is no issue as there is a big gap between our oil filter position and exhaust. The 10mm difference in length is not significant.

I have asked them for the pressure for the relief valve, waiting for reply.

Smaller filter = lower capacity => might need adjust replacement interval.

 Oil Filter Information [For Sharing with all REVO riders]

1. If you purchase performance filters (why not use stock OEM Honda oil filters? Because there are better filters out there which can either give higher filtration or higher flow rates), then do be informed that both KN-303 and KN-204 from K&N Filters, can be used for the Honda Revo.

2. The difference between KN-303 and KN-204, is in its length, which varies only by 10mm. Width, thread size etc (all features) are the same. This 10mm length is negligible in both performance and mileage. The reason for difference in length is to facilitate installation in tight spaces, for example if you have changed to an aftermarket full system, the pipes may be closer to the oil filter due to variations in the headers/pipes design.

3. This is the specs for the 2 filter models:

Part KN-303 Product Specifications

Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes

Bypass Valve: Yes

Filter Material: High Flow Premium Media

Gasket Material: Nitrile Rubber

Height: 3.344 in (85 mm)

Outside Diameter: 2.688 in (68 mm)

PSI Relief Valve: Yes

Removal Nut: Yes

Style: Canister

Thread Specification: M20 x 1.5

Part KN-204 Product Specifications

Product Style: Oil Filters

Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes

Bypass Valve: Yes

Filter Material: High Flow Premium Media

Gasket Material: Nitrile Rubber

Height: 2.969 in (75 mm)

Outside Diameter: 2.656 in (67 mm)

PSI Relief Valve: Yes

Removal Nut: Yes

Style: Canister

Thread Specification: M20 x 1.5

4. Both filters have the same PSI for the relief valve/bypass valve. It is 14psi/1bar.

5. What is the purpose of the relief valve/bypass valve? - When the filter material is too clogged up with dirt, oil pressure will increase, and this will activate the bypass allowing the engine oil to bypass the filter material through a valve, and enter the engine. The reason for such a design is so that you will not ever encounter a situation whereby the engine receives zero or too little EO, due to a clogged up filter (e.g. maybe the user never change it for a long time). This protects your engine. If however, you REGULARLY change your oil filter, or like me, I change it before its lifespan reaches, then the bypass valve will unlikely ever be activated.

6. How often to change oil filter is up to user preference, and riding patterns. You can follow the manual's recommendations, or like me, I find that its a pretty cheap thing to change, so I change it every two EO change.

Hopes this add to the knowledge base for Honda REVO users.

Cheers.

I encountered a leaked oil filter. Mech said its "local" honda filter n the gaskets not that good. So how much is this KNN oil filter?

Engine Case Cooler?

I saw this gadget at 219 Motorshop and Ah Boy, wonder if anyone knows whether it's useful or a gimmick?

It is called an "Engine Oil Cooler/Breather" - basically it's a hose attached to the cap where you pour in your EO. This hose is supposed to allow hot air and high pressure air to escape from your engine case, out into the environment.

Water will not enter the engine case, as this hose is attached to another unit that prevents water from entering.

1. Does releasing hot air from engine case really help?

2. Will this cause the EO to dry up faster?

From what i know all engines originally equiped with crankcase breather already..and the blowby gases are redirected into the airbox to be reburnt for lesser pollution..
