Why do many bikes have their COEs renewed?

Hi everyone,

 

I'm new to this forum, and riding too! Got my license since Apr 15, but only really rode since Nov 15.

 

A little intro: I'm 23 y/o Male and currently riding my mum's (yes, really haha) Honda Wave 125S, though I wanted an R15 v2 or Fazer 16st when I first started learning.

 

So my question is as topic, why are there so many bikes with their COEs renewed? Are the machines still reliable?

 

Why is it not like cars, where most of them just choose to scrap and get a new one?

 

Sorry for the noob question.. but really curious haha

If it is a 2B 4 stroker which is mainly a no-frills reliable workhorse, a makeover by a m/c shop will probably make it last a reasonable number of yrs ahead. Most of them are probably renewed by the motorcycle shop so that it could be sold again with the new lease of coe. Plus with the recent coe spike, one will hv to choose riding a renewed or buy used to be within affordable means. All in all, the current coe is not doing any favor to the majority m/c community.

 

Unlike cars, one has to pay to scrap the bike thou one can choose to do it themselves. Else we pay m/c a fee to do it. M/c has no scrap value, not a 5k bike nor a 50k bike.

 

Hopefully ur mum's bike has your name in the insurance as well but with ur addition as a 2nd rider & new rider somemore, premuim will go up.

To be honest...bikes are good for more than 10 years...other countries rides can prove it...its just the coe tat kills bikes n cars here....coe determines their lifespan...tats why the last of the gtr34 are going to disappear soon...not cos if their condition but the coe system...unless renew

Car when renew COE they will not get back their OMV value. Bike have no OMV value so its makes economical sense to renew COE when the bike condition is good.

i suppose it does make more sense to renew coe and ride for another 10 years.

but some would renew for 5 years only, due to the high COE price, but then you cannot renew it after that 5 years. renewing for 5 years is cheaper.
