one more thing ... since your bike is new, don't forget to install the crash bar!! ... for stock tyres if you don't want to change just ride with care during wet day or any wet surface ESPECIALLY in the mscp. You don't like the look of any scratch on your new paint .... hehehehe

Hi guys, I just got a new P200. got some enquiries about its mantainance. I have searched the forums but got somewhat confused...

 

What is the interval to change EO? I got some mix answer both from forum and chris.. 1 say 5k 1 say 2k... confused

 

Another is that the oil stainer, do i nid to clean every 10000km or go as wat chris say "no need always clean de"??

Apparently I was assigned reply duty for your questions, and I was thought to listen to my elders so... Hi and welcome

 

EO change is according to the manual every 5000 km. But that is only after the first change that has to be done after your first 750km (check the manual, if you don't have it we can give you a scanned copy).

 

If you stick to the manual for maintenance your bike will be fine. However, some of us like to change more often. For example me, I never wait 5000km. I can feel it when the bike needs some new oil to be happy, and I like my bike to be happy. I'm currently touring on this bike, and because I put it through very variable speeds, type of roads and riding needs, I feel that it's best to change the oil more frequently than when I ride it in Singapore. Another factor for me at the moment is the quality of the oil I find : right now in South Laos, I don't dream of putting my hands on a good fully synthetic oil 10w40, so I have to make do with what I find in the shops. So I tend to change the oil sooner (don't worry you will learn about EO with time - at the beginning just ask us which oil we use and why and it will help you decide. Finances can play a part in your decision as well of course).

 

I have no idea what you call the oil stainer. If you mean the oil centrifugal filter, then yes its every 10000km. Don't wait too long to clean it, you'll be surprised how much crap it stores..

 

But for now, like MJ said, enjoy riding your bike, and check the manual if in doubt. Of course, post here any question you have, there are no stupid questions and so far there is still a few of us who bravely answer the same questions over and over again without feeling suicidal (yet!). So ask away.

 

But more important than the EO or maintenance of the bike, did you think about your riding gear ? (that goes for you too Zawu!). Minimum to have is Full Face helmet, gloves and jacket with protective armor. Always ride with fully closed shoes (no flip-flops!).

Here is my take on safety gear and this is the bare minimum I would assume...

 

1. Gloves with knuckle protectors. First thing you use as instinct to prevent a fall is by using your hands.

2. Shoes with toes covered.Best is steel toed full height boots.

3. Long sleeves with jacket. Never ride with short sleeves or tank tops. Looks cool till you hit the ground. Best is proper riding jacket and pants with protectors.

4. Wear reflective or brightly colored gear at night.

 

A lot of us might say it's a hassle until your first fall. I used to dislike gloves cos it was hot. This was until my first fishtail when I hit the ground. Fortunately I had gloves on, it was torn. Watch glass was smashed and had aches in my body for a few days.

Speed during fall was around 40km/hr.
