Hi everyone,

I just bought a 1999 shadow 400 about a week ago,

I had problems accelerating as it will kinda like sluggish when I open throttle.

It will accelerate then suddenly de accelerate for a while then accelerate again..

thus, I did a servicing of EO change, oil filter, plugs, coolant and clean the carb.

Mech check the air filter and say it can still be used.

I also changed some parts as it was spoiled like throttle, throttle cables and gear leaver.

However after servicing, the bike still have the same sluggish feeling when accelerating.

The bike is picking up slower than buses..

Is it normal for the bike to behave like that??

Also the bike has not been well taken of as it has many rust marks at the frame, chrome and spokes.

Can share how you guys maintain the outlook of the bike??

Will greatly appreciate your advice and thanks alot everyone.

just hope that the sluggish is not due to pistol

chrome is a challenge to maintain

u need to polish it with metal polish about 1 week once

even that it is difficult to get rid of those stubborn small specks of rust

from far not able to notice

but it is close less than 1 feet you can see those specks of rust

for me

i try to matte black as much as possible

lighten my job of polishing

dun get me wrong chrome is nice

could be water in fuel tank too.. this kinda major problem need expert help. bring to Rosli. at autobay kaki bukit. RS motors #02-45. be prepared to wait long2 though.

Of course I trust my skills. I ride alone cos I don't trust the competency of the driver next to me.

did you just full throttle when accelerating? if yes, it is like that for this bike, so just acclerate gently should be ok.

chain tighted? got lube the chain?

sprocket size 41 teeth or 38 teeth ? there are ppl out there who change their sprocket size to smaller size to get less vibration at top speed at the expense of slow pick-up.

oic. i meant the hard saddle box where did u get?

bro i am confused

when I mentioned saddle, i am referring to the seat

saddle = seat

hard saddle box = side box

soft saddle bag = usually leather side bag

stock = comes with the bike when new

customised = added into the bike

hope that clarify

Do a google on "mutazu"

They have a lot of nice ones

Mine got two size

I choose the smaller size

The big one I think is too big

About to buy a Shadow when I noticed presence of oil around the lower half of 1 of the v-twin engines. Will this be a big problem, and expensive to fix?

Also, when doing a left or right turn, the handle bar tends to pull towards that direction. Can some kind owners or experts clue me in please?

Appreciate your reply soon. Thanks you.

sounds like a gasket wornout issue. i think it will be quite a hole in the pocket cos need to bring out the whole engine. but i may be wrong.

Sorry you are wrong,if you see water that will be a big hole in your pocket oil is simple to solve the problem and cheap it's only some screw to

tighten (that the word of the old mech i am :shades: )

That's before .... wait to see After

I had this problem too. For mine it was due to bad connection in the wires connecting the alternator to rectifier. Brought it to Rosli, had him repair the wires and it was gone.

Do note that after heavy rain will encounter this problem a little bit again, most probably due to water in carb. Heard it's a common problem for Steed and Shadow.

On second thought, if it's a complete no ignition for a second or 2, instead of sputtering then it's carb tuning issues. Encountered this on my Phantom last time.

For me if I see oil or water leaks I wouldn't buy it. You never know, it could be a punctured engine block.

Is this the first time you're riding a 2A cruiser bike? 1st time I rode also had that feeling at low speeds. It's known as a chopper flop lol. Common for many heavy cruisers and is normal. If at high speeds also have this feeling, then something is wrong.

Back to the gear acquisition + mod topic, I'm actually looking to find replica/original kuryakyn iso grips OR Avon grips in SG. Anyone can point me in the right direction? XD

I currently have these but they slip alot when I'm wearing gloves. Hope the avon/kury will provide more grip. :(

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your advises and feed backs.

I send my bike to Rosli at Autobay this morning for him to take a look.

However I need to leave it there as he is quite busy.

BTW does Rosli charge high for his services??

Hope my bike do not have major problems..

Quite broke as I had an accident on my GSR 400 a few months back and it was total loss.

I have a few more enquiries, will appreciate your feedback :)

1) I noticed having poor fuel economy on the bike..

About 12 - 14km / Litre of 98 petrol..

I ride slowly with gentle pick up and never more than 90km on expressways.

2) My odometer LCD display is spoilt.

Where and how much can i get a replacement??

3) My bike do not have the original seat, only a small low seat which is uncomfortable..

Is the Shadow ACE 750 / VT750 seat same as the Shadow ACE 400 seat??

Was thinking of getting a set from ebay.

Thanks alot :)

Rosli does amazing job, but you need to chase after him. if not, can expect your bike to lay idle on one side for days. haha he's an excellent mechanic nonetheless. his charges may be a little much higher, but you can rest assured you wont be fixing what needs no fixing and you wont have to go back to him for the same problem.

12-14km on a 98 is very low. ask rosli's opinion about this. he's got lotsa experience with shadows.

Of course I trust my skills. I ride alone cos I don't trust the competency of the driver next to me.

To all lao jiao here I was just wondering is it normal for the shadow fuel tank to be able to move from side to side. I have just got the shadow from another bro. After riding it for a few days notice that if able to tilt the tank from side to side about 20 degrees. Is this normal or there is some screw that is loose? He told me it was nothing to worry about.

ShadowVoltmeter2.jpgShadowVoltmeter.jpg

Photos of the voltmeter to show? I always wondered what additional info do I know if I install a voltmeter on my bike?

Voltmeter let u the the condition of ur battery and rectifier

Rectifier charge ur battery

When engine off ignition on should read 12v

Engine running or bike moving should read 13-14v

Cos the rectifier is running and should charge the battery

So if ur battery is not working u know

Ur rectifier not working u know

Cost me $55 to install

If in stall ur own can get for $33

Brand is shadow

Prevent bike breakdown due to battery or rectifier

I think

Should not be a big problem

Loose screw or rusty joint

Rusty joint.may need to fabricate the joint if rust is bad

No problem
