TOKYO (AFP) - - Riding motorcycles helps keep drivers young by invigorating their brains, the scientist behind popular "Brain Training" computer software said Wednesday, citing a new scientific study.

"The driver's brain gets activated by riding motorbikes" in part because it requires heightened alertness, Ryuta Kawashima said after his research team and Yamaha Motor conducted a string of experiments involving middle-aged men.

"In a convenient and easy environment, the human mind and body get used to setting the hurdle low," he warned. "Our final conclusion is that riding motorcycles can lead to smart ageing."

Kawashima is the designer of "Brain Training" software, which incorporates quizzes and other games and is available on the Nintendo DS game console under the name "Brain Age" in North America.

A self-professed motorcycle fan, 49-year-old Kawashima cited a new study conducted jointly by Yamaha and Tohoku University, for which he works.

One experiment involved 22 men, all in their 40s and 50s, who held motorcycle licences but had not taken a ride for at least a decade.

They were randomly split into two groups -- one asked to resume riding motorcycles in everyday life for two months, and another that kept using bicycles or cars.

"The group that rode motorbikes posted higher marks in cognitive function tests," Kawashima said.

In one test, which required the men to remember a set of numbers in reverse order, the riders' scores jumped by more than 50 percent in two months, while the non-riders' marks deteriorated slightly, he said.

The riders also said they made fewer mistakes at work and felt happier.

"Mental care is a very big issue in modern society," said Kawashima. "I think we made an interesting stir here as data showed you can improve your mental condition simply by using motorbikes to commute."

Abuse victims can sue Vatican

WASHINGTON - LAWYERS for a man who alleged he was sexually abused 40 years ago as a teenager by a Roman Catholic priest lauded on Wednesday a US appeals court decision that paves the way for abuse victims to sue the Vatican.

'Yesterday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Portland, Oregon, issued a decision that opens the door to survivors (of the sex abuse scandal in the US Catholic church) to sue the Vatican for its role in the cover-up of priests and molestations by them,' Jeff Anderson, a lawyer for the plaintiff, told AFP.

The case was originally brought seven years ago on behalf of a plaintiff named only as John Doe, who alleged that he was sexually molested on several occasions when he was 15 or 16 by Roman Catholic priest Father Andrew Ronan.

Before he was transferred to Portland, Father Ronan had been moved out of two previous parishes - in Ireland and the United States - after he admitted to sexually molesting young boys.

When the case finally came to court last year, the Holy See claimed immunity under a US law that grants immunity before US courts to foreign states, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA).

But the judges held that Doe's claim met the criteria for an exception to the FSIA, saying it has 'control over the priest in terms of his removal and his transfers, enough control that it can be held legally responsible as the master of the priest,' said Anderson.

The ruling was 'a major breakthrough in the sense that the problem emanates from the top,' he said, adding that he expects the Vatican to ask for a review of the ruling or go to the US Supreme Court.

Since the 1990s thousands of cases of abuse by Catholic clergy against mostly boys and dating back to the 1950s have surfaced, forcing the resignation of several top bishops and massive damage payouts to victims.

The US clergy sex scandal mushroomed into a nationwide embarrassment for the Church after the then archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Bernard Law, resigned in 2002 amid intense pressure due to his handling of abusive priests.

In 2007, the Catholic Church in the United States paid out US$615 million dollars (S$950 million) to settle sex abuse cases, according to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

During a six-day visit to the United States last year, Pope Benedict XVI mentioned the sex scandal in nearly every homily and speech he gave and chastised the Catholic Church in the United States for the way it has handled the issue. -- AFP

This is one I can honestly say I have never seen circulating in the

emails so; I'll start it, if it touches you and you want to forward

it.

> Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? I

> never noticed this... .

>

> The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed

> over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave

> clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin

> was neatly folded, and was placed at the head of that stony coffin.

>

> Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to

> the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the

> entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the

> one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out

> of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!' Peter and the

> other disciple ran to the tomb to see.. The other disciple outran

> Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen

> cloth lying there, but he didn't go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and

> went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while

> the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the

> side.

>

> Was that important? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes!

>

> In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have

> to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The

> folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish

> boy knew this tradition. When the servant set the dinner table for the

> master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it.

> The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait,

> just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the

> servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was

> finished.

>

> Now if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe

> his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that

> napkin and toss it onto the table. The servant would then know to clear

> the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done'.

>

> But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and

> laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table,

> because...... .....

>

> The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!'

>

> He is Coming Back!! Be Blessed!
