im planning to get a weekend ride. and since its a weekend ride, it has to be something fun and shiok to drive around.

was looking around and the only fun car that suits my budget is an MX5. im planning to get an old one, COE till 2011, change it to a weekend plate. also planning to renew its COE.

reasons why i chose mx5:

1. i already have a car that can sit 5 people comfortably

2. already have a bike

3. mx5 is open top- shiok

4. its a 1.6litre, manual (the one i am eyeing on)

5. spare parts are easily available (have been asking around for almost a year! you can see that i have been thinking for a long time)

6. since im changing to OPC, the 150% rd tax for a 1.6l shld not bother me

7. the FC is also pretty good. at around 13.5km/l on the average

8. suits my budget of less den $30k.

9. this car is not a "need", it just a "want"

any comments are welcome.

MX5 is fun to drive. although 1.6 it feels fairly zippy becos very light.

the real price of a MX5 with COE until 2011 is easily less than $20k

you should just buy directly from owner on cash basis.

and no point putting OPC, normal tax is cheap anyhow and it is more convenient.

thats my opinion

Where do you get this figure from? It should be 8 to 12 km/l, depending on your tyres and driving profile.

Insurance is expensive. You may want to ask for a quote first. You can skip calling China Insurance, HSBC Insurance, India International, Mitsui Sumitomo, Tenet Insurance and Tokio Marine. They don't cover MX-5.

i used to drive an MX5 in 1993. i easily get fc of average 13.5km/l, including some agressive driving. tat time i was using 16" original sports rims. i was on 205 45 16 . anyway, its a normal 1.6litre inline 4 carb engine tuned to churn out 100hp at crank. car is light too. where did your 8 - 12km/l come from?

insurance is cheap for my age with 50% NCD from NTUC :cheer:

Drove all the series from 1.6 &1.8 NA, 1.6 NB, 2.0 NC...NA felt most raw of all wif superb feedback seemed pretty reliable too :) NB less harsh but still captured spirit of the miata wif upgrades. Must add that most of the current crop of NA's are asking way to high..$27-30k for coe till 2011...(recently jux missed out on the Mazda speed 1.8NB with turbo, OMV 40k, only 2 on our shores)

Now driving NC which mazda claims to still capture the spirit of Jinba Ittai which will be putting up for sale to make way for Godzilla..hee!

wealth of info here.. http://www.miata.net/

Pic of my current NC..asking $79kneg!

so far a few offers which I wasnt keen to consider.

Not becos no good but becos i havent really decide what car to get.

was think of 325Cab, 630i, C70, Saab93Cab, audi1.8Tcab etc.....

I even thought of getting a standard Jap for family days and z4 for daily use.

but in the end my 525i suits me better especially with the babyseat.

anyway no hurry, if cant find something which really captures my heart and head then I'll just drive on. It's reliable, handsome, spacious and fully paid up!

Test drove frd's Z4 3.0smg but immediately found handling lacking compared to me mx-5. The SMG seems to have a delayed response if ur used to DSG tranny. Asthetically, Z3 with full ACS kit does the biz. Also, 2nd hand market flooded with Z4's...my frd eventually traded his Z4 in for a 325 cabrio and the car landed up @ Eurosports...plate SF*1212...seen price drop frm $118 to $103-107 and still no takers..jux goes to reflect current market sentiment...defn a buyer's market. Best to take prudent approach in times like tis..on the bright side the oil barons seem to be easing up on oil prices at least for now...phew!

Yes will be prudent, in fact I think I will keep my 5er until next year then say.

Spending to construct/renovate my house.

Moreover, bonus maybe less than 6months this round.

Plus lost a fair bit in the stock market.

Overall not too fabulous lah...sianz.....
