Simple premise: ERP was implemented to ensure smooth flow of traffic, that is we pay, LTA gives smooth traffic. SIMPLE CONTRACT.

BUT if after paying, we still get clogged roads and bumper to bumper traffic, especially if it is caused by road works ordered by the LTA or NParks. Isn't LTA then in breach?

Case in point: I saw this huge traffic jam at eastbound ECP on the Benjamin Sheares bridge at 6.30 pm a few days ago. It was caused by road works at the crown of the bridge! Why are they messing with road works at the peak evening traffic right after the ERP gantry? If this is not stupid ... Hence in this case, how can the LTA still deduct money for jam caused by them?

how abt increase the ERP charging rate(like mad) for 4 wheelers and above and reduce motorcycle charging rate to a 1 or 2 cents...?

Inherited Will.

These are the things that will not be stopped.

this is how a smart gahmen work

lower the COE price, so that more and more people can afford cars.

then you raise the ERP charges so that you can recoup back the loss of your COE sales from the ERP earnings.

then you release a press statement saying that ERP is meant to control traffic flow.

but deep inside, you hope (and know) that once people got a car, they confirm will drive the car out rather than park it at carpark all day long.

so the moment they drive out of the carpark, *beep* money deducted from cashcard.

once people start to complain about ERP rates, then you raise another statement to say you should pay for the price you use. the more convenient the road will let you arrive at your place, the higher the charges will be.

so overall, the purpose of implementing ERP is to create inconvenience for everyone who are slaving to earn every cents to contribute to the country's GDP. and surprisingly, they believe that's how a country should develop.

Agreed, for the ERP to work, the price has to be high enough to deter people from using the road.

If the ERP is say $10 per gantry for cars, I am sure it will work.

Most people will not be willing or able to pay $30 per trip for 3 gantries on the CTE.

Therefore CTE will certainly not Jam.

But if 1 gantry $1, then many people will still be willing or able to pay the $3 for the use of CTE during the rush hour.

Therefore CTE will still jam even though the ERP is still collecting money for the gavernment.

But why are the authorities not rising the price when the answer to the CTE jam is so simple and easy to implement?

The answer is obvious isn't it?

Motorcyclist are the nicest people on the road, try not to kill us.

SINGAPORE: Distance—based charging is the next step when it comes to road pricing in Singapore. This is where motorists are charged based on the distance they travel on congested roads, using GPS technology.

Currently, Singapore motorists are charged at specific points when they enter congested areas, using Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been working with potential suppliers to test different satellite systems for the past couple of years. However, at the Urban Transport Leaders Summit on Wednesday, its chief engineer said there is no complete solution in sight yet.

Dr Chin Kian Keong, group director, Road Operations & Community, LTA, said: "No one system has been demonstrated to be working at integrated levels. So again, we have to take a cautious approach and watch what is happening in other countries."

No timeline has been set for moving to this next stage of road pricing.

Such fine—tuning where motorists pay for the problems they cause is getting increasingly common around the world, according to urban planners at the conference. For example, a pollution tax is what a few countries are suggesting.

Professor David Hensher, director, Institute of Transport & Logistics, University of Sydney, said: "You are driving your nice, fancy Mercedes car which has got eight cylinders and high litres per hundred kilometres, and you are paying no more per kilometre than someone driving a very fuel—efficient small car that’s taking up less road space and in fact, polluting the atmosphere far less."

Separately, LTA also signed a memorandum on Wednesday with six key partners to explore new solutions to urban transport problems.
