yup.. the 2 were outstanding ... Steven Taylor, who made it to the team of the week in soccernet was described " Steven Taylor, who was as close to flawless as a Newcastle defender can be, as he marshalled Didier Drogba during the Tyneside club's goalless draw with Chelsea at St James Park today. Drogba was so expertly contained he started to lose his cool as the game wore on. Not like him at all! "

whoever, as long as he is more exp, is ok for the job... Roeder has been always anyhow placing players in the wrong position. Striker put as mid, mid put as def, right play as left. He play inconsistents players everytime. And good players were not even seen on the bench. And anyhow signing players, One of the examples is olivier bernard. He looks like a young kid playing championship manager. :sian:

Allardyce holds Newcastle talks

Sam Allardyce has held talks with Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd about the vacant manager's post.

Allardyce, who stepped down from his position as Bolton boss on 29 April, is favourite to succeed Glenn Roeder, who resigned last weekend.

"It was a good meeting and my agent will speak to Newcastle again over the next few days to discuss matters further," Allardyce told The Sun.

Shepherd said: "Sam's excited and we're looking forward to making this work."

Allardyce and Shepherd met for lunch at London Claridge's hotel on Friday to discuss the proposed deal.

Shepherd reportedly told his associates at the restaurant: "We want Sam's determination, enthusiasm and ability to lift the club."

606: DEBATE

Is Sam Allardyce the right man for Newcastle United?

Allardyce turned down the chance to manage the Magpies just under three years ago.

Last summer he was interviewed for the England job but was beaten to the role by Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren.

Allardyce pledged to focus on Bolton but resigned with two league games of the season remaining. His assistant Sammie Lee was soon appointed as his successor.

Roeder resigned last Sunday after he and chairman Freddy Shepherd had come under fire from fans after Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Blackburn.

His number two Nigel Pearson, who will be assisted by Lee Clark and Terry McDermott, will take charge of Sunday's final game of the season at Watford.

Newcastle announce Allardyce as manager

Sam Allardyce arrived at Newcastle today and promised to give the club's fans the team they deserve.

Allardyce, who was due to be unveiled as Glenn Roeder's successor at a press conference after agreeing a three-year contract, flew by helicopter up to Tyneside this morning after attending the League Managers' Association dinner in Nottingham last night.

His first port of call was the training ground, where he met those players who have not already started their summer break, but his focus is already on the new season and the task of reviving the club's ailing fortunes.

Allardyce told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: 'I suppose this is the greatest challenge I have ever had, but it is one I am excited about and one I am looking forward to.

'It is no secret that what has happened in the past is not good enough for a club as big as Newcastle United, and it is now my job to change all that.

'After leaving Bolton Wanderers last week, I was expecting a longer rest, but once (chairman) Freddy (Shepherd) opened that door, I was in.

'Whatever may or not be said about Freddy Shepherd, when I met him in London on Friday, I could feel his passion for Newcastle United.

'He is a passionate supporter and it is well-known throughout football that he has always supported his managers.

'Now it is up to everyone from Freddy down, to me, the players, the fans and even the tea lady to give these fans the success they deserve.'

One of Allardyce's first jobs will be to tackle the dressing room unrest which came to the fore over the weekend when £10million striker Obafemi Martins and French midfielder Charles N'Zogbia were absent from the 16 for the final day clash with Watford.

However, perhaps even more pressing is the task of resolving Michael Owen's future at St James' Park.

Allardyce said: 'One of the first things I will be doing is sitting down with Michael Owen and having a little chat with him.

'I will be asking him does he want to stay with us or go? Obviously I would like him to stay because he has that rare commodity of being able to score goals.

'What I think Michael needs is more time to get on track for us and hopefully he will decide to take that time.'

Been a long time since I post in this thread...... 1st thing 1st..... given a choice, I would prefer Kevin Keegan rather than Big Sam. Keegan's attacking style football is really nice & impressive. But I wouldnt say the same when he's at Man City. Hehe..

Anywayz, since Big Sam is axeing the 5 players, 4 of which are defenders, I think he had already 'see' what other managers had failed to 'see'. The prob with our defence. Good choice and good start as a new Magpie manager I would say. Hopefully, he would be able to bring in quality players esp defenders and bring glory to the club. Not asking for trophy.......................yet, but at least back to where we are supposed to be........... THE TOP FOUR!!!!

BTW, does anyone here feels that Roeder looks like Harry Potter?

Yeah! Keegan's attacking footie was the reason I started supporting NUFC in the first place. I remember the 1st match Newcastle played after I 'officially' decided I was gonna support them was against Man U, and I was thinking "oh no...there goes the Toon Army's winning streak". But of course, my fears were unfounded, and we got the infamous 5-0 victory over the devils. I can even remember who scored and how...heh heh.

Billionaire Ashley launches Newcastle takeover

Billionaire businessman Mike Ashley today bought a 41.6% holding in Newcastle to launch a takeover bid.

St James' Holdings Limited, a company set up specifically to buy shares in the club, has acquired 55,342,223 shares at 100p each from Wynyard (Guernsey) Limited, Cameron Hall Developments Limited and Cameron Hall Developments Limited Executive Pension Scheme, the holdings of Sir John Hall and his family.

Stock Exchange rules mean that the company now has to make a cash offer for the remaining shares, around 29.8% of which belong to chairman Freddy Shepherd.

Sir John will remain as the club's life president, although the man who succeeded him as chairman, Shepherd, now faces a major decision over his continuing involvement.

Ashley said: 'I am delighted to have this opportunity to invest in Newcastle United.

'The club has a fantastic infrastructure, for which Sir John and the board must take much of the credit.

'I am pleased that Sir John has agreed to remain as life president of the club.

'Newcastle United has a wonderful heritage and the passion of its fans is legendary.

'I am sure that, like me, they are already excited about the prospects for next season under the new manager's stewardship.'

Sir John, who formed the Magpie Group to take over the club back in the early 1990s, stood down as chairman in 1997 and believes the time is now right for new blood at St James' Park.

He said: 'I have been associated with the direction of Newcastle United for nearly 20 years.

'In that time, I have led the club and, before I retired, led the team responsible for the modernisation of the club we all see today.

'It is now time for me to move on and let others take up the challenge of competing in the global marketplace.

'Mike Ashley is a major player in the sporting world and I am convinced that he is the right person to take my place and take the club forward.

'I am sure he will be good for the club and its loyal fans and indeed for the region.

'I wish him the very best and hope he enjoys it as much as I have.

'Finally, I would like to thank all the fans for their support whilst I was at the **** and would ask them to lend the same level of support to Mike. He has my full backing.'

Interest in Newcastle has been rife for some time and Shepherd has fought off two approaches in recent months, one by the Jersey-based Belgravia Group and the other by the Polygon-backed St James' Park Group.

He has insisted in the past he would not stand in the way of a 'Geordie Abramovich' who wanted to pour millions into the club.

Today's news will come as a boost to Shepherd's critics, who have been calling for change for some time, but it remains to be seen just how the latest development will affect his position.
