Scoot over to the On The Racetrack forums. You will see a Tankslappers - how to handle them thread.

 

At that time when I crashed, there were a lot of factors that might have contributed to it...maybe it was my M1 tyre, maybe it was my improperly tuned suspension, i dunno. But the past few weeks before the trackday I have noticed that when I began pushing to go faster, the rear would just "fishtail" wobble a little whenever. It's like little slides happening as I was banked during the turn.

 

Needless to say, I didn't pay attention and just let that happen anyway. Silly me.

 

Anyways, let's get back to your questions. Understand that a tankslap may begin when at high speed environments, your wheel either:

 

1. Gets shifted (or shall I say, knocked) one side abruptly, apart from being centre all the time. Caused by many things including road dirt and obstacles...won't list them all here.

 

2. Gets lifted off into the air momentarily and it so happens that when it lands back onto the road, the wheel is pointed off-centre.

 

For (#1) and (#2), when the wheel is already off-centre but the bike continues in a straight line, the front wheel attempts to "correct" its off-centre problem. It swings the other way. However, due to the high speed environment, it swings the other way too fast and now it's off centre again but pointing in the opposite direction.

The swinging action then repeats until it lessens and the bike gets stabilised, or it gets out of control. It's like a yo-yo.

 

How it will get out of control when a tankslap happens is when (and I quote this from sources)

1. You grab a handful of your brakes in an attempt to slow down.

2. You stiffen yourself up on your bike. Meaning to say, not only your body stiffens, you also grab your handlebars tightly when a tankslap begins to happen instead of letting the wobbling die down.

 

I'm not sure on the ways to avoid it since we riders are always fast and on the move, but from what I was being told is to not throttle up so much at bends/corners.

Small tidbit: when uneven and dirty/rocky roads meet a bike's stiff suspension setup, chances of this happening at high speeds are high.

 

When it happens, one of the best ways to handle this is to not karang? kabut. Loosen your grip on your handlebars, let the bike go straight, and let the wobbling die down. If you're like me and a corner is coming, no choice but to let it go straight rather than let it spin off out of control.

RVF Newbie Outing

(Laojiaos are strongly encouraged to attend as well)

 

Lately, we have an influx of new members who have just bought their RVF's.

There are also members that will be selling their beloved V4 soon.

Lots of people have been asking for outings so let's get the ball rolling!

This outing will be held in the beginning of June in the evening. There will be a place for newbies (and laojiaos) to meet and eat, then sip kopi as we discuss about our V4's, and everything under the sun as well.

 

Looks like there will be a photo session too since the turnout looks good.

And it'll be done with a professional camera, keeping my fingers crossed in the hopes that all of us can promote our image

 

Rounding around Singapore will be expected after the meetup too.
