actuali manual is fun,can drag gear whenever u 1... :D

as 4 auto,i wanna ask a qn...O/D actuali 4 overtaking rite???hw does it actualli wrk???

u mean that "S" button found on the gear shift ah?

i think it allows the car to rev higher before shifting up, so that u can gain speed faster... think for some models it also hardens the suspension n such for a generally more "sporty" ride.

Auto also can drag gear what?

Got 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear mah? Don't understand why people keep insisting auto cars cannot drag...

O/D stands for Overdrive. When you press the O/D button, you switch OFF the final gear ratio. That means 3rd gear for most cars unless you're driving a Merc or BMW or any auto cars with 5 gears or cars that have CVT transmissions.

Actually even when you press the O/D button, if your foot is really pressed down all the way, the gearbox will even shift further down to 2nd gear. But one thing for sure, it will never shift to 4th gear...

I dunno about other cars, but my 1 year old Toyota Corolla (auto) is supposed to have 4 gears. But when your foot is relaxed, the engine will cruise at an even lower speed. For example after accelerating to 100kmh, the tachometer shows maybe 2200rpm. Once the road is straight and your right foot relaxes, the engine speed will drop to 2000rpm while maintaining the same speed, making it as if it's got 5 gears...

I most auto cars, when the accelarator is pressed to the end, it indicates that the driver wants to move away fast and the car drops a gear automatically to give better accelaration.... after the right foot is relax, the engine management system will shift the gear up to give better fuel efficiency.....

Most, if not all modern auto cars have this feature.....

For me, definately a manual. Auto makes driving sian. With manual, u have something to play with, drag with.....Only hates it when it jams.

huuuuhhhhh? :giddy:

i drive auto car then bike is manual one how? :p

i'm not sure if the car drops a gear when the accelerator is pressed all the way...but usually when i step it down all the way, it revvs up till higher than normal before changing gear. so equivalent to dragging gear i guess.

yea 1 hand hold steering wheel and the other hand hold gf's hand nicer lah! then traffic jam that time also no sore legs :shades:

aiyah to each his/her own lah.....some ppl lazy like me will go 4 auto loh....no such thing as auto=girl or manual=stupid lah...but 2 me riding is different...i feel got gear more shiok 4 riding..i suppose one can implement the same mindset 2 driving but the thrill of riding is a whole different thing with the engine roaring beneath u....

one thing i heard bout auto cars is that when gear box chui then gotta change whole set...dunno how true lah... :giddy:

auto is good for leisure... when you want to do something with one hand... be it holding another person's hand, grabbing onto something (you guys know).. eating, smoknig, etc. but then again, when you want to overtake someone or move off fast, you can't really manage your speed as well as manual cars unless your car's computer is very good and can really predict what you're going to do.

manual, nothing beats this. but constant changing of gear can be quite troublesome.

My personal opinion is: for MOST situations in Singaporean traffic, automatic transmission is ideal.

It's always a compromise. I love convertibles and used to own a Ford XR3i convertible. I had to sell it after a while despite the fact that I loved it. Why? Simply cos I can't live with it everyday and I can't afford 2 cars for different purposes. Noisy, leaky, no space for anything, 2 doors...

Even if I could, I'd rarely drive the convertible anyway cos most of the time, I would NEED the normal car.

So really, it all boils down to one's lifestyle, wealth, priorities...

Auto or manual, they both work...

well I agree with the chicken's backside.... auto is a better option in Singapore.... more practical.... plus most of the new cars now come with semi-auto gearboxes....

I was playing with my paddle shifts the other day and I must say, a little confusing.... no clutch, got to monitor which gear you on (via a dashboard display) etc.... but really, the response is nearly as good or even better than a manual 'cause there is no free play whilst changing gear..... smooth as hell.....

So I vouch for semi-autos..... first gear, 0-100 in about 7+ secs..... pretty good for an auto eh......

No lah.... say until like that....I think that the bikes give the best overall feel vs performance over cars...... I hardly drive fast.....only sometimes when I'm p*ssed off with someone/thing....even to the point of recklessness..... so I try as much, not to do it at all..... but sometimes, it just takes over.....

But anyway, back to the topic..... I still vouch for semi-autos..... with at least 5 speed........
