well, most new cars have this feature.....semi auto....well, maybe the continental ones....

I would say, 90% of the time, the driver would be in auto mode....only when doing 'hiong' overtaking that the manual would be used.....

actually it depends on wat u really wan in a car? relax or thrill?

if u r the sort goin 4 relax, definitely an auto car will b the one 4 u

in other words if u r the one who likes 2 fly around, get a manual car.

but sometimes doesn't mean a manual car will always b a faster car den an auto ones...it depends on the driver also...skills is also another factor

toking abt maintainence, a manual car would b beta cos the gear box is cheaper compared 2 an auto one...cos i experience changing an auto gear box b4 on my old car....it cost me a BOMB!!!

that's the question i keep asking myself..quite redundent to implement that new invention..a careless slip can accelerate instead of braking. :faint:

 Hi all, check this out..:

1. Acceleration. A manual transmission accelerates more rapidly, and evenly throughout the gears, especially in a situation where one needs to merge into traffic more quickly. Automatics, on the other hand, start off very slowly in the lower speeds, then accelerate more in the higher speeds. This makes it very difficult to predict just how long it will take to reach the targetted speed. Score 1 for the manual transmission.

2. Maneuverability. Due to the acceleration differences above, an automatic is less maneuverable in a crisis situation (say, quick lane changes when being cut off), whereas a manual is just as peppy as its owner. Advantage: manual.

3. Assistance in maintaining alertness. Since one is constantly shifting gears in a manual transmission vehicle as traffic speeds change, one is forced to stay alert. This is especially important in stop-and-go traffic situations, where the car can stall if one isn’t alert. Automatics on the other hand, require no adjustment or attention, as the correct gear is always engaged. In a traffic situation, this could cut down on one’s alertness. This is especially dangerous when dealing with erratic drivers who will change lanes without signalling in tight quarters or any of the other myriad hazards such as rear-endings that come with thick traffic. Advantage: manual.

4. Fuel efficiency. An automatic guzzles far more gas than a manual vehicle-- EPA statistics and ratings on fuel efficiency show exactly that. This is because some energy is used to power the gear-shifting mechanisms in an automatic vehicle. A manual transmission requires none of that energy, since the driver does all of that him or herself. Advantage: manual.

5. Calorie burning. An automatic requires the actions of only one bodypart, the right leg, alternately pressing the gas pedal or brake, and maybe the hands for some occasional steering. A manual transmission, on the other hand, requires the use of both legs, with the left leg engaging the clutch as necessary, the left arm constantly steering, while the right arm shifts gears. The right leg is used in the same manner as the automatic. So, driving a manual transmission is more of a workout than driving an automatic. Advantage: manual.

6. Wear on brakes. When going downhill, in an automatic, one must constantly keep riding the brakes. In a manual transmission, on the other hand, one merely needs to shift into a lower gear, and with minimal useage of the brakes, one’s speed can be controlled quite easily. jus merely downshifted to third gear, and speed was very controlled, while continuous brake lights and smelled burning brake pads from the automatics all around her. Advantage: manual.

7. Startup due to battery failure. In an automatic, a jumper cable and additional vehicle are required, to restart a car with a depleted battery. On the other hand, one merely needs to push a manual transmission vehicle, and get it going at a reasonable speed, then jump in and start the vehicle-- it will start up with no problem, and the battery will recharge as it is driven. Advantage: manual.

All good arguments!

But I'd sacrifice all that to be able to hold my wife/gf's hand all the time while driving...

:D

no offence to you or any1 but safety first man... wouldn't it be better to hold yr wife/gf hands in life than in death....

touch wood.. just remember while driving or riding danger is always there...

tats how accidents happen isn't it?

well, take care all..!!!

Anyone who claimed that they can drive a car well would never drive a auto car. Period.

Auto car was invented for lazy ppl who can't really handle and control a car the way it is meant to be.

Those who know what I am talking about are in the same boat with me as for the rest who insist that auto car is still acceptable...well you really don't know how to DRIVE a car! :D :D

you cannot sterotype the lazy from the hardworking can you? and it's not a matter of who can drive well should drive a manual car, and those who insist that auto car is still acceptable don't know how to drive a car ..it all boils down to the individual preference..

Not necessarily. I have taken advanced driving courses in Malaysia and Australia. I know how to do doughnuts, handbrake turns, heel-toeing to setup a car for under/oversteer...

I've owned a an STI, EVO 4 and Skyline GTR in the 6 years that I was living in OZ and go to the track almost every week. So i have had some experience in that area as well.

I think i can handle a car better than most people who prefer to drive a manual car.

But I prefer to drive an auto car becos I have different priorities in life. That's all.

No offense but I think it's quite inappropriate to make statements like that.

Well slowrider, how insipid a view.... does it mean that people who drive automatic cars are lazy and can't control a car???

Look at formula One.... paddle shifts....well, clutchless too..... so you are saying these F1 drivers don't really know how to control their vehicle??? or even going to the extent of calling them lazy??? I beg to differ.......

I think it boils down to choice.... for example, it would difficult to get a mercedes or a BMW in manual form (unless M3 or M5)...... even the mercedes' performance models such as the SL55 are made in auto modes..... I don't think there's a manual version available.... sure, most people who purchase these kinds of cars want luxury rather than 'control' but I'm sure there exist a proporation of those who buy the car for its performance.....

Please think before you make such statements......

of course not.... but my point is, not to make blatant statements like that.... it each his/her own....

Of course you can constructively criticize but please be mindful of what you say.....
