Thanks for the prompt reply. Can the GPS be powered by a USB source? such that if I have one of those cigarette lighter plugs cum USB female, I power the unit via the USB cable?

Cheers

yep, that's exactly what I'm using.

But that would depend what GPS is yours. What GPS is yours ?

The Vista will work with the solution you mentioned.

Cool .... now to get the cables and stuff. the Cigarette Lighter / USB combo will step down the voltage for the USB cable? I reckon I will affix a female USB port somewhere on my dash.

Very exciting, this GPS stuff.

Just an opinion...

I was comparing the Garmin 60CSx and the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx.

The 60CSx costs slightly more and is slightly larger. However personally I feel the 60CSx is a more viable option for mounting to a motorcycle for the following reasons.

1. 60CSx houses a larger screen

2. 60CSx is seemingly more ruggard (ok this may be subjective)

3. 60CSx has big buttons up front and below the screen, so you don't cover the screen while you fiddle with the buttons.

The only drawbacks I find are that the 60CSx costs more than the eTrex Vista HCx and it has a shorter battery life span.

Anyone has more to add?

Yes, have played with the 60 before, but found that for my purpose (counterchecking position), the smaller screen trade off is something I can live with. In fact the smaller size of the Vista is attractive for me.

Its bulky & has antenna attached to it some may not like it but it serves a purpose

The etrex model is small & can fit into pockets easily after all it depends on your preference between performance & size

Between the two, for use on a motorcycle, the 60Csx is better because not only it has a larger screen, all it's buttons are on the front (except for the ON/OFF), and they can be easier to operate with gloves.

The Vista has 5 buttons + 1 thumb-stick whereas the 60Csx has 9 buttons + 1 rocker key. This means that on a 60Csx, on the average, you need less action than the Vista. Eg. The "FIND" function, you need only one action on the 60Csx while you need 4 actions on the Vista.

Really? very informative. But I am really drawn to the small size of the HCx and will try it out. I tried the 60 and didn't like the antennae.

The PDA GPSs tend to be non-waterproof. Garmin GPS are (depending on model) generally rated to be weatherproof i.e. is sealed through and can ride through rain. The Garmin Zumo, for example, is waterproof.

You gotta start with what do you want, in terms of spending, purpose and other considerations. Let us know and we can help you better. It is hard for us to suggest without parameters.

Here's an example of a mount:

Generally, either mount it using a bicycle mount or a RAM-mount.

how gps should be mounted? I believe it should be mounted in such a way you can see the auto-prompt messages without having to tilt yr head downwards; even when you are travelling at 100km/hr.

That's why i mount my GPS at the mirror .

The cheapo way of mounting a GPS on a bike is shown on Page 6, Post #261. It's cheap but in no way it's not effective nor insecure, and it's very practical, no other way can a GPS can be mounted and dismounted that quickly.

Yo, Demon, great holder you got there ... especially the way the holder mould to the eTrax's body.

I was thinking of directly velcro or 3M lock the back of the unit to my dash, too risky?

the surface on the back is corrugated so I didn't think the velcro will stick well. For my DIYs, as much as possible, I would like it to be able to revert to stock condition without any mess.

if the 3M Dual lock hasn't won over your confidence, in addition, you can secure it with a quick release cord, like those they use on HP.

Haven't got my unit in my hands yet, so can't tell. I was thinking a good thick double side tape might do the job. Will see how.

Will get it in a week's time .. can't wait. Better than X'Mas.
