I tried looking up info about this place, but cant really find much about it. And there is no info on it in SBF too. That is why i am sharing it with all of our fellow riders.

Hopefully you guys find it useful and interesting. Who knows, it MIGHT becomes a STICKY. :goodluck:

Where is Betong?

It is located in the south of Thailand. Very near to the border of Thailand and Malaysia.

http://www.betongtown.com/images/maps/map-thailand_03.gif

Why Betong?

Although Betong is only a small town, there are a few reasons which I find it worth riding there at least once.

- It is nearer to Singapore than Hatyai

- The World Largest Mailbox is there

- The ONLY vehicle tunnel in the kingdom is in Betong

- There are many nice waterfalls

- There is a natural Hotspring.

- There is this historical tunnel dug up by the communist 1km long through the

mountain which is worth a visit.

- It is located in the mountain area so you will get nice scenery while riding to all the

interesting places.

- In order to get there, you will need to go on the "Gerik Highway" in Malaysia which

you will get good scenery too.

Most importantly

- Since it is located very near to the borders of Thailand and Malaysia, You get the best of both countries. For example,

- There are many Malays and Chinese locals. Indians too, although not alot.

- You will find both Chinese and Muslim food there besides the Thai food.

- Believe it or not Most of the Thai can either speak Malay & Thai or they can speak

chinese, cantonese and Thai. Of course, some of them can speak English.

- If you are a Chinese, the local be it Chinese or Thai will most of the time speak

cantonese to you as they will think that you are from Malaysia.

- If you are a Malay, the local be it Chinese or Thai will most of the time speak Malay

to you, as they will also think you are from Malaysia.

- Most of the hotel staffs are as mention above.

So there is NO Language Barrier!!

So how do I get there?

Just hit on to North South Highway and ride all the way till you reach the exit 143. Take this exit towards Kuala Kangsar and go towards Gerik. As you reach nearer to the borders, you will see signs that lead you to Thailand.

After crossing the Thailand Immigration. just follow the road for about 10-15 mins and you be in Betong.

A WORD OF CAUTION. DO NOT TRY TO RIDE TO HAIYAT OR ANY OTHER PARTS OF THAILAND FROM HERE. IT IS DANGEROUS. EVEN THE LOCALS WARN ME THAT. IT IS DUE TO THE ACTIVITIES HAPPENING IN THE SOUTH. IF YOU WANT TO RIDE TO HAIYAT OR ANYWHERE ELSE, GO BY SAODAO BORDER.

At the Thai immigration, you will have to park you bike at the side and walk to do the necessary. It is unlike Malaysia immigration where there is a drive through. There is no drive through at the Thai immigration.

You will need to go to this small office where you will show them your bike log card and they will reg your bike to ride in thai. Make sure they sign on this reg paper. Keep this paper well cause you will need to return it to them went you leave Thai. If you lose it, there will be a fine and you will need to make police report( if I am not wrong). You will also need to pay 20baht. Than you will go and fill in the Thai white card. After that, walk to the normal counter, show them you got all these and they will stamp your passport and you can now cross.

Note: you will only need to pay 20baht once. Either at the bike Reg office or at the counter where they stamp your passport.

You will have to walk through the tunnel yourself to feel it. It was really a good experience.

As we know, the chinese in singapore will burn joss stick and the paper when praying to the god. There is a slight different in the practise in betong. They do not burn the paper, instead, they set off firecracker after the joss stick. I tried it too. At the TAU PEY GONG outside the tunnel.

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that!"

hahahhaha...man, u have covered 99.9% of betong.

The 0.1% is the eye-candy outlets....there are a few there. The go-go dancers will dance on stage and if u see but no touch..its free entertainment. If you cannot tahan and need to touch & feel and let go...it will cost a Baht100 tip....so keep your hand to yourself.

Beer at such eye-candy outlet is at 'pricey' baht300-400 for 2 big bottles...as opposed to bar's baht110-120 per bottle.

Massage is also good here...

enjoy...
