U're riding an X9? Go for a coolant flush. Maybe the bike is due for one? Coz lots of owners neglect cooling systems, sometimes till it's too late. That's when the real problems come in. Check out the advertiser's section, they got pretty good deals.

Try changing to a new radiator cap first.

When a radiator cap is old, the rubber seal sometimes age harden and it does not hold the pressure in the radiator well anymore.

The radiator needs to be kept pressurised to keep raise the coolant's boiling point. When the coolant starts to boil it does not transfer heat well so the engine will start to overheat.

The purpose of the coolant is to 'absorb' the heat from the engine and lose it to the air at the radiator and then it is circulated back to the engine and the cycle starts over again.

Also make sure the coolant level is full in the radiator.. ie at the brim of the neck when you take off the radiator cap.

The radiator should be filled with coolant only and not topped off with water. Water has a lower boiling point (useless heat transfer) and can promote corrosion and leave deposits thereby affecting the efficiency of the radiator.

meaning to say the coolant must be very full? when i open my radiator cap i can't even see the coolant.. someone correct me..

what about the engine oil? what will it affect to the bike?

and do we have to top up water on any where on the bike??

really urgent.. new to bike :)

one more question.. how to do coolant flushing? how can we buy the coolant from shops and DIY? is it possible?

if you have to ask what is coolant flush, i dont think its advisable for you to do it yourself.

but yeah, to those who know how, its rather easy to do your own coolant flush, be it with premix coolant or the coolant mix + water.

some people swear my maxima coolant. others swear on engine icez. i use "predator blood" cheap mix that i mix with tap water..

It is pretty obvious from the way you ask questions, you are not mechanically savvy yet. It is better to have someone with mechanical background knowledge on motorcycles guide you or better still send the bike to a mechanic first.... next time when you have learnt from others you can do yourself.

The coolant of a liquid cooled engine is critical to the operation of the engine. Too little and the engine will run hot resulting in blown gaskets or cracked or warped cylinder heads. Too hot will also result in engine oil burning and premature breakdown of its lubricative properties.

Nowadays bikes come with sealed batteries so there is no topping up of water on the bikes.

And one more very important thing... if you want to add water to the radiator.. please make sure it is distilled water. Normal tap water is not pure water but has dissolved minerals in it (for improving the taste) which will form deposits within the radiator core, resulting in poor flow and cooling efficiency.

Want to do something, please understand the principle and rationale behind it. I dare to say that I am sure that no coolant company recommends adding tap water to their products... distilled water maybe. But also nowadays.. these coolant products come premixed already.

Go do a google search on radiators to understand how the system works.

A little knowledge is a very dangerous thing.

yup! will send to a bike shop to check it out.. What about the engine oil?

do you guys know anything about the Shell Helix oil? what's that?

so meaning to say nowdays coolant provided from the bikeshop is premix? which is better?

i take a look today at my coolant.. opened up and was shocked. the coolant not even @ the tube level. is way below down.. can't barely see any..

so have a question again, when you guys start the bike does the temp shoot up to 1/4?

it is normal for temp gauge to move upwards after the bike engine warms up.

for different models of bike, the

in your case, highly suspect there is insufficient coolant to cool down the bike.

visit a bikeshop to have it topped up and see if there are any leakages etc leading to why there is insufficient coolant to start with.

i hope u havent been riding around with such low coolant levels. You may think that is a minor problem but animals and people can die of heat stroke. Same for your engine. Either take it to the shop right NOW to get your problems rectified for a few bucks or take it in a weeks time when your engine is dead and needs a thousand dollar rebuild.

i reserve distilled water to top up my wet cell battery. anyways to each their own.

you could go to the workshop and get them to do everything for you, from oil and plug change to tightening the chain etcetera, or you could do things yourself for cheaper.

some people swear by iridium spark plugs. i use cheaper plugs that cost a fraction.

some people swear by premixed coolant like maxima and engine icez. i use the green coolant mix that has to be mixed with water. i go a bit further and use tap water.

some people swear by full synthetic engine oil. i use semi synthetic that costs less than half.

some people swear by fancy aerosol bottles of chain lubrication that costs in the region of 10 to 20 dollars per bottle. i use expanded engine oil that i keep whenever i do an oil change.

some people insist on changing their air filters when it gets clogged. i soak it in petrol and reuse it when the gunk is cleared off.

some people swear on filling their petrol with SingaporeVPower, to the extent that they insist that there is a performance difference as compared to Malaysian VPower. I fill my bike with Malaysian Esso Regular. In singapore i would pump 92, whatever damned station is nearby.

some people keep changing their batteries whenever it goes flat, ignoring problems like an under performing charging system. I just top up the damned water. Not applicable for MF cells.

now this would be off topic, but i am certain that there is someone who thinks his head is worth a million dollars, and buys a golden helmet that is studded with diamonds. i wear a KBC "Kabuto" helmet that ITE Dover sells. because i support the student union, even though i am from a different institution. and mostly because its DOT and SNELL approved.

lots of garbage tends to fall into a mind thats too open. always take everything with a pinch of salt.
