Berbatov on brink of £28m move to Old Trafford

By Dale Johnson

Updated: August 12, 2008, 5:18 PM UK

Manchester United are believed to be on the brink of signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Spurs have been holding out for a fee in the region of £38million for their star striker, but it is thought they have now reached agreement with the Premier League champions on a £28million deal. Spurs are closing in on a replacement signing and have also been boosted by the form of striker Darren Bent who has hit 13 goals in pre-season.

The Bulgarian has been tracked by United for months and their conduct had angered the White Hart Lane club, who believe the Red Devils were pursuing a public transfer campaign. United were reported to the FA by Spurs but it is likely any deal would see this complaint withdrawn.

Reports suggest the 27-year-old could be a United player by the time the Premier League kicks off this weekend, with some claiming he was at United's Carrington training ground for talks on Tuesday.

Berbatov has made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford, something which has frustrated bosses at Spurs who felt he should have shown more loyalty, and he has been criticised for his lack of application since returning from the summer break. It will come as a second blow in a matter of weeks after Robbie Keane insisted to be given permission to move to Liverpool.

Zenit St Petersburg forward Andrei Arshavin and Spartak Moscow star Roman Pavlyuchenko both remain at the top of coach Juande Ramos' wanted list, and the sale of Berbatov could free up enough funds for the Russian strike pair to be reunited in north London. West Ham United striker Dean Ashton - reportedly told to shed pounds by England coach Fabio Capello - has also been tracked, but a move for David Villa would appear to be doomed to failure.

Berbatov has scored 27 Premier League goals in 63 starts since moving from Bayer Leverkusen but his time at the club has been dogged by transfer rumours and questions over his commitment.

United, meanwhile, have apparently failed with a bid for Valencia's attacking midfielder David Silva - according to the player's agent.

'Manchester United made an offer for David Silva, but this has been turned down by Valencia,' Julio Llorente said. 'Silva doesn't want to play in England because he is happy at Valencia.

'His family are settled and if he was to move it would only be to another Spanish club, like Real Madrid or Barcelona. David Silva will start the new season at Valencia.'

Valencia president Vicente Soriano echoed the sentiment, insisting to Spanish sports tabloid, Marca: 'I can assure you that Villa and Silva will continue this season at Valencia.'

Is Berbatov the right man for United?

Manchester United's seemingly relentless pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov looks like it might finally bear fruit; but it raises the question of whether the brooding Bulgarian is the right man for Old Trafford?

His skill and technical ability are certainly not under scrutiny but his temperament and attitude must be called into question following the way he has conducted himself since the transfer link with United came to light.

Reports from White Hart Lane suggest that the sulky striker has been less than one hundred percent committed during pre-season and was hauled off at half-time during Tottenham's 5-0 demolition of AS Roma at the weekend.

In an earlier warm-up match against Norwich City in July the striker reacted badly after being named as a substitute by manager Juande Ramos and didn't even bother to get changed out of his tracksuit.

The Bulgarian appears uninterested in remaining at Tottenham and has failed to score in pre-season, while Darren Bent, a peripheral figure last term but motivated by the chance of a place in the starting eleven this season, has scored 13 goals.

Berbatov has always had a languid and relaxed style on the football pitch but he appears to have reverted to the moping figure that prompted headlines such as 'JUAN HELL OF A SULK DIMI' and 'RAMOS POSER OVER BERBA THE SULK' when he sniffed the chance of a transfer to Old Trafford during the January transfer window.

The Spurs fans were not too pleased with his reaction then and have bombarded message boards with angry posts about the striker's apparent want-away attitude this time around.

A player who appears to spit out his dummy when things don't go his way is not the right type of character to enhance Manchester United's dogged, and ultimately successful, mentality.

What will happen if Berbatov has to sit on the bench for a run of games as Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo orchestrate the United attack?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who enjoyed a testimonal in front of a packed Old Trafford this summer, would not have become the United legend he is had he thrown a strop every time the 'super-sub' was named on the bench.

More recently Tevez has quickly become a crowd favourite because he has a never-say-die attitude to complement his quality as a footballer, the sulking type don't appear to have a place at Old Trafford.

Maybe Sir Alex Ferguson sees something of the brooding Eric Cantona in Berbatov but with Cristiano Ronaldo already making waves at Old Trafford with his on going love-in with Real Madrid, the arrival of another moody forward could do more harm than good.

Man U need to get an "unknown". Remember when they signed Cantona? Solskjaer? No one heard of them before and look how good they turned out. I believe this is a good time for Man U to make use of their world wide contacts and scout talents.

Agree on that point. But yet up till this point, it's still all speculations.

But Henry is out of contention. He has already played for Barca in the Champion League Qualifiers, so he's cup-tied. Surely, SAF won't want a player who ain't eligible to play in the CL.

Spurs set record fee for Berbatov

White Hart Lane chief Daniel Levy was left incandescent by claims from United that they were on the verge of competing a deal for the Bulgarian hitman, before Tottenham had even received a formal offer. Now Spurs will demand a British record fee in excess of the £32million United agreed to complete the full transfer of Carlos Tevez. While Tottenham had put a £30m price tag on Berbatov's head, they had been privately willing to settle for £28m.

Martin Lipton, The Mirror

Reports the Guardian: "The Premier League has decided there is not enough hard evidence to charge Manchester United with making an illegal approach for the Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov."

The paper says Premier League officials are to ask Spurs to supply conclusive proof to corroborate what Spurs chairman Daniel Levy described as "a blatant example of sheer arrogance and interference" on United's part.

The Daily Mail says Tottenham are planning for life without Berbatov with a £17million bid for Russian international Andrei Arshavin.

I think man utd shuld get a finished product for a striker. They already have an unfinished product in Fraizer Campbell. I'm impressed in how he was cool in his finishing. He did quite well to against Portmouth. Remember he came and nearly scored.

By the way I do hope Man Utd get a striker like Ole. A super sub. Now a days its hard to get players like him who does not complain when he sit on the bench. Well if I was him I too won't complain. I'm paid to 50 000 pound per week to sit on the bench who don't want + less risk of injuries hahaha

Sir Alex lines up transfer surprise at United

Updated: August 16, 2008, 12:38 PM UK

Sir Alex Ferguson played a game of tease ahead of Manchester United's Premier League opener with Newcastle by warning of a surprise within the next 48 hours.

In the build-up to another title defence, Ferguson played mounting speculation of Dimitar Berbatov's signing with a totally straight bat.

That was until he tired of the questioning and opted for a different tactic.

'You might be surprised at what is going to happen over the next two days,' he said.

Given Ferguson announced seven days ago he would have a new face in his squad for the arrival of Kevin Keegan's men, nothing should be taken at face value.

But it would be no major shock if the United boss was parading a big-money signing around Old Trafford on Sunday, even if club officials are continuing to dampen down speculation that hit fever pitch at lunchtime.

There was talk of a medical in the north-west taking place and even a spot being earmarked in the squad to face Kevin Keegan's men. The truth was that Berbatov was in London, with Tottenham, preparing to travel north for a game at Middlesbrough.

'I cannot give you an answer because there isn't one,' said Ferguson, when asked whether he still expected to bring in a new player.

'We have been trying to add to the squad but nothing has changed, I have nothing else to say.'

If, as expected, Berbatov becomes a United player over the next few days, he will gain an official seal of approval from Owen Hargreaves, who played for Bayern Munich in the striker's Bayer Leverkusen days.

'Berbatov is a fabulous player, who would be a fine addition to any team,' said the England midfielder.

'The thing is, if Manchester United sign a player, it has to be a top player and that would be exciting for us all.

'Obviously, you can never have too many strikers, although I don't actually think we need to improve on too much from last season.'

Ferguson desperately needs a striker, of that there is no doubt.

Berbatov is the preferred choice but if Tottenham wait too long before deciding whether to sell a player who clearly wants to leave, they may find United have gone elsewhere.

David Villa, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Thierry Henry have all been mentioned in recent days and it is not beyond Ferguson's ability to move fast given it is another two weeks before the transfer deadline.

For now though, the Scot must use what he has.

That means once again the emphasis will be on some of the older members of his squad, specifically Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Approaching 35 and 34 respectively, the longevity of the pair is astounding, let alone the hunger of players who have won 18 league championships between them.

'We do have to protect the old dinosaurs a little bit more but they are all fit guys,' said Ferguson.

'Giggs' endurance test was the best in the club this summer, which is unbelievable. I don't know what he is made of.

'He has never carried any weight either and has always looked after himself, so he will play a lot of games for us.

'Paul Scholes is much the same, as is Gary Neville. There is plenty of football left in them as well.'

Nevertheless, Ferguson needs one more experienced forward.

Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney will carry the fight against a Newcastle side which conceded 11 in two meetings with United last term and has not won at Old Trafford since 1971.

But more demanding tests lie ahead, not least in the Super Cup two weeks from now, a game which requires the postponement of a Premier League encounter with Fulham and, thanks to an uncomfortable memory, also demands Ferguson's full attention.

'Last time we reached the Super Cup I made the mistake of playing Lazio with half a team because we had Newcastle straight afterwards,' he said.

'But when I saw them celebrating I was angry. They thought they had won the World Cup.

'I want to win that match and I also want to win the World Club Championship because I have never understood why the fact we were the first British team to win it - Liverpool have had five attempts - never got any praise.'

hope SAF is not juz teasing us...

for me i still think hunterlaar would be the best option for utd..but i dont think ferguson wants a striker that needs to prove himself at the moment.. he knows that he's not gona be at OT for much longger n he wants to break the Kops record..because of the time limit that he has with utd,he would go for the tried at BPL level....he wants instant impact....

Dimitar Berbatov hands in Tottenham transfer request to reignite Man United move

Manchester United have taken a giant leap closer to signing Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov after the Bulgarian last night reportedly handed in a transfer request.

Berbatov has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Sir Alex Ferguson known to be a big fan of the 27-year-old.

United are thought to have tabelled a £20 million bid, but Spurs are insisting that only a £30m offer will prize the forward from White Hart Lane.

Berbatov is keen on a move to the reigning Premier League champions and has taken the action of requesting a transfer to prevent the opportunity from stalling completely.

A friend of Berbatov is quoted in the Sun as saying: "Dimi's decided to put in a transfer request. He can't wait to go to Old Trafford and play for United.

"He feels he behaved professionally throughout his period. He has never spoken publicly on the situation out of respect for Tottenham.

"However, he does not want to miss out on the start of United's season and he feels that was his only option left."

Rather than retain a striker who wants to be elsewhere, Tottenham are likely to allow the move, provided they find a replacement.
