Revised Training Curriculum for Motorcyclists

Recognising that motorcyclists may not have sufficient knowledge on the use of their vehicles, TP will be revising the existing training curriculum of schools in 2009 to enhance the knowledge of learner riders on the parameters of their vehicles and to encourage defensive riding on the road. The revised curriculum will include 3 theoretical lessons on defensive riding. During these lessons, instructors will also impart practical defensive riding tips with the aid of scenario-based videos.

New Video for Newbie Drivers/ Riders

In addition, TP will also be producing a new road safety video that includes the common causes of accidents, video clips of actual accidents, as well as victims’ and offenders’ sharing of their real-life experiences. The intention of the video is to instill in drivers/riders the consequences of not behaving responsibly on the roads. All new drivers and riders will have to view this video before they are allowed to collect their driving licences. The revised curriculum and the video will be implemented by mid-2009.

they ought to make motorcycling a component of CL 3 too or at least have a compulsory session where the instructors pillion them out for a ride to get the feeling of what it is like from the feeling of being outside the car and maybe they would be more "feeling" for us...

Grounded... :/

Good point, :thumb: hope they get to see this suggestion, dou quite hard to implement coz many private instructors wouldn't bother anyway.

But if implement in school, at least more drivers will "unds".

If that's the case, might as well for bike pillion training, the learner rider tong pang a learner driver! lagi can "feel" us!

Or when the learner rider has passed a certain level ald, say lesson 7, den tong pang a learner driver?

Coz if more bikers befriend drivers, den more understanding! :cheeky:

PS:

1) Can purposely stop behind/ beside buses/ lorries so they get the black smoke treatment to unds y we always squeeze to their front even if stop after line.

2) Must get a instructor to (unknowingly to the learner driver) tailgate with a car, horn and high beam!

3) Or maybe u think they'll rather apply these on learner riders in hope to further deter them from considering to learn bike? :dot:

What about so called lau chiao drivers who anyhow drive? Maybe they should go for refresher courses. Always anyhow change lane w/o signal, never check blind spot, never observe safety rules etc..... esp foreign riders/drivers....

foreign riders/drivers very difficult.

btw, after the recent PIE dash by a drunkard which resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, i seriously think defensive driving is not enough.

the key thing is cars always do a jam brake when anything bad happened, regardless if the situation is avoidable. jam brake is also the main cause when we see drivers slam into ppl house/tree/drain etc. Perhaps the group where defensive driving should be thot are drivers. Also, make sure drivers REALLY learn to brake with engine brake, a skill many drivers sorely does not possess/know well.

Yep... Sometimes, skills just can't save you. But, I know something that'll work every time....

for sure lots of them fail *lets say there's re-assessment/evaluation

I'm quite sad that why they solely focus on strengthening the training curriculum on motorcycle trainees? This should spread to the drivers as well, as they might be the contributor of an accident too. *I'm not been bias cos I'm a rider. We all are road user, we got the responsibility.

rider A, kena hit by driver B due to reckless driving. Statistically another rider die on the road, this pile up till end of year. "OH, motorcyclist high accident rate must implement extra training for them."

bike is a machine without soul, rider would inject new life and character to this machine

they always say motorcyclists has the highest fatality rate.. immediately ppl say cause bikers reckless....WTF

The reason for the fatality rate is just simply because of the fact that bikers are expose to the elements with little protection whereas drivers are in a protective shell.

if want to talk about bad road users..I can say that there's much more reckless drivers then bikers! and what happens in an accident? the biker loses his life while the driver just get a $2k fine.

The fact is that majority of the motorcycle accidents are self-induced. No matter how you look at it, the statistics will tell you that drivers have got nothing to do with it. Or at least to the authorities, they appear so. Besides, how many of these reckless riders on the road live to tell the tale? To tell us how stupid they were? They are dead.

You probably see people from day to day coming into forum complaining about how f-ked up drivers are, causing you a near-accident, but think for yourself how often you yourself almost screwed it up? Solely due to your own mistake or recklessness? Many. Just that we don't say it.

Drivers are, no doubt, f-ked up. High beaming you when you are travelling adhering to speed limits, trying to squeeze you out of your lane when you had the right of way. BUT, if we don't react aggressively to it, most often than not, they will leave you alone. In fact, such incidents happen between car to car also, just that even if they end up in accident statistics, they're not fatal.

I myself got into alot of quarrels with c0ck drivers as well. And one of these ah beng drivers even tell me motorcyclists are poor, uneducated farks, and it reflects the drivers' despise and mentality towards motorcyclists. I was so surprised at such an ignorant remark, but you gotta accept the fact that it is how some of these self-perceived tank drivers look at us.

Letting drivers stepping into the shoes of a motorcyclist is an ideal that will not help them from waking up their idea. Because it's fundamentally a cultural imbued discrimination, till we're able to build a more graceful society of accepting each individual's differences, stop despising one another, then we'll be able to see this problem resolved.

And till the day you see any of our ministers enjoys motorcycling. Not going to happen.

i think wat they mean is that:

u r just a motorcyclist, suck it up and accept that drivers in sg wun change, if u cant accept it dun ride L O R!

means they wanna train us to the point where we can advert A L L c0ckster drivers, perhaps a bike with left, right, bottom, top boosters to boost us out of harm's way for all situations.

so instead of drivers driving more safely, the victims should learn to ride more skillfully. Of coz(?) what, makes perfect sense, since we are the victims, we will want to level up and not be a victim. whereas drivers are only would be killers, not killers yet, wait until become killer ald den say (like 1min jail, $0.20 fine).

to tell drivers to drive better. they will bochup coz they not affected in any accident. hence they turn attention to us, the victims, to tell us "good luck!" if u dun improve riding skills, they ain't changing. Get it?

Just like Go Green initiatives -Super markets charge u E X T R A $ for using plastic bags as per normal, instead of giving u discounts when u dun use them. Meaning they do exactly the same thing, totally no value addedness, except now can charge u more, legally.

Reason being punishment works better than rewards, at least in the eyes of the elites.

what is thought in schools will not prepare them for life on the road...its 2 different things...and if they drive in Malaysia even worse...will kanna bully until siao!

its good to be safe while driving but being too safe can also get u into trouble...a balance should be struck between both defensively driving and practicing safe habits...

The govt should let us ride motobikes at 14 years old again. L plate can ride on the road but cannot pillon. One licence for all classes. Class 2 all the way. Don't need to put P-Plate somemore. Give super low COE on bikes. That is the way. Then those without 2A or 2 automatically get their class 2 licence. :)

This is what I foresee in the future... :(

Singapore Road Safety Council to introduce compulsory Madam Zora's psychic classes to 2B learners with effect from 1 January 201X.

A spokesman from the Council said that despite all past measures, the mortality rate for motorcyclists still remains high. With Madam Zora's psychic classes, 2B learners will be able to predict types of catastrophe that may befall them on the road at least 1km away and take the necessary precaution measures to avoid them.

the main reasons:

the gahmen dun wan ppl here to ride bike period

1) bike cheap, road tax cheap, insurance cheap, parking free-cheap

2) if many ppl ride bike cause more jam like vietnam or like thailand

3) gahmen can make more money out from cars, not bikes

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, DUN BE A FOOL THINKING THAT THEY REALLY CARE FOR BIKERS!

maybe psycho them abt safety gear lor, and safety riding.

might as well driving centre distribute safety gear; as in we go there buy. since they ald big market, shd be able to drive price down.

Coz i find most riders get license w/o knowing what is "safety". at least for me la, if i neber join HOV, i really wun noe abt safety that much.

since safety gear need getting used to, might as well they sell there, so riders who wanna buy can get used to it while learning, instead of getting license le den say "not used to it LAH!" and totally give up on safety gear. :faint:

Imagine they distribute safety gear - once they do that hosay liao, all motor diam also muz follow pricing else no one buy from them. can get ff/ mesh jacket/ glove etc all at cheap rate. then can start to change something..
