The battery in my SW needs to be replaced. My fuel and coolant temperature gauge keep restarting when I crank my engine.

This is the tell tale sign of battery may not be able to hold charge or insufficient charging.

My bike work well with new battery!! Thank for the lobang!! Luckily the bike can start after few attempt if not have to tow.. Better change before the bike failed to start and have to take E- leave and time wasted to get tow truck to tow the bike. Waste $$$ and time!!

My apologies.

Propose:

1. From 15 Sep 2012? Flight to Delhi.

2. Train from Delhi to Kalka then Toy Train to Shimla. *2 nights.

3. Bus to Dharamsala. *2 nights? But hor... rainy season here during that time.

4. Bus to Manali and rent bikes. *2 nights, get use to the bikes.

5. Rest Stop - Keylong 1N.

6. Rest Stop - Pang 1N

7. Rest Stop - Leh 3N (includes a day ride to Khardung La)

8. Leave the bike in Leh and 1-way flight to Delhi. *SGD$165

9. Delhi local tours (3 nights).

10. Flight back to SG, 30 Sep 2012.

approved!!! Checked the itinerary again with my colleauge. Very good plan. I like the 1 way trip up, but we need to check if we can rent the bike 1 way, or we have to return it back to manali. I do like spending 3 nights at Leh though.

Yup. Rent bike from Manali and leave it at Leh.

That's my 1 of 2 concern. I believe there should be some franchise of bike rental shops between these 2 towns.

The other concern is the bike. Enfield not very reliable. Need to source for other makes/models available.

Anyway, still got ample time to plan.

Must concentrate on Malacca and then Betong for now.

The Toy Train ride is nice... did that in Dec 1995 when i visited my friend in Shimla (it is spelled as Simla in many parts of India), wonder if it is still the same after 15+ years :p

To the surprise of many, the Indian rail system is among the best/most comprehensive in the world, despite being well known for punctuality problems. The delhi-kalka-shimla trip would be a good experience.

Recommended Kalka-Shimla train is Shivalik Express, ETD Kalka at 5.30am (die die must get there on time) and ETA Shimla 11am (although some websites says it about 10.15am).

The very tricky leg is from Delhi (not New Delhi) to Kalka via train# 12311 HWH DLI KLK MAI. Make sure you go to the correct station cos New Delhi Rail Station (station code NDLS) and Delhi (or Old Delhi) Rail Station (station code DLI) are different and some distance apart. Problem is that the train does not start from Delhi but from Howrah, 1441km of rail away, 26hrs to cover 27 stations in between. Any delays during that 26hrs could cause late arrivals/departures at Delhi. The train is scheduled to arrive Kalka about 4+am and its not like our MRT where we just cross over the platform, the Toy Train's boarding platform is a short walk away from the alighting point.

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/cgi_bin/inet_trnnum_cgi.cgi

There are also trains from New Delhi to Kalka, but they are "non-connecting" trains, unless you wanna stay a night at the nothing to see small town.

Say if unluckily the train is late and you know for sure will miss the Toy Train, you may wanna consider alighting at Chandigarh (2 stations before Kalka) and take a bus up to Shimla bus station.

Happy planning

The problem with Sri Betong is the communication with the front desk (booking).

The last time we went, reservation was made by phone call.

Yet on arrival, they said no booking made. Lucky got enough rooms to spare us.

Grand Mandarin can book by email.

Just go by your decision. I am easy bro...

Brothers,

Just got my SW400 from direct owner a few weeks back. Totally in love with the bike. Just that it is rather heavy and quite long in length when compare to my previous SYM excel. So now I'm trying to find out more about this heavy beast and how to service it.

Mileage now: 22800km

Both tyres changed at 20800km

Engine oil changed at 20800km

I had read the manual and browsed through this tread and the tech tread and yet I still have some questions I would like to ask:

1. At what interval do you change your engine oil? The manual said 12k and someone else said he changed at 2.5k.

2. When you service your bike, what else do you all normally change?

3. Which bike shop will you recommend? I'm over at west side. I saw the list provided by Scoobydoo in the tech corner and it is such a long list. Haha

4. What are the things I must look out for with this bike?

5. And any great advice you can give me.

Thanks in advance!

P.s. I would like to join those trips you guys have been planning in the future if I'm available.

2. When you service your bike, what else do you all normally change? Normal service just the EO, gear oil (use same EO), oil filter. Plugs if use Iridium can last for 2 oil changes at least. Belt and rollers only change by 24k-30k.

3. Which bike shop will you recommend? I'm over at west side. I saw the list provided by Scoobydoo in the tech corner and it is such a long list. Haha

Normal service can just go Toh Guan or Bukit Merah area. Specific to scooters then must visit scooter shop, like AC, Future or even K & T.

4. What are the things I must look out for with this bike?

Never use normal gear oil or too thick EO (15w50) for the transmission.

Battery must be in good condition. Fix a voltmeter for early warning.

5. And any great advice you can give me.

Never park facing downwards if need to reverse.

Sharp turning the bike at too slow a speed (or pushing) might drop. Got leg use leg.

Don't enjoy too much and forget about other traffic.

Thanks in advance!

Btw, if possible can also relocate the IU from the handle bar to inside the right side compartment.

Brothers,

I had read the manual and browsed through this tread and the tech tread and yet I still have some questions I would like to ask:

1. At what interval do you change your engine oil? The manual said 12k and someone else said he changed at 2.5k.

Any time between 5k to 8k for motorbikes is ok.

It depends on what grade of EO and change interval you prefer. For full synthetic EO (strongly recommended to use 10w40 full-syn), change interval is like SW9000 suggested. But if use semi-syn or dinosaur oil, you'll have to change much earlier, maybe every 2K.

2. When you service your bike, what else do you all normally change?

Normal service just the EO, gear oil (use same EO), oil filter. Plugs if use Iridium can last for 2 oil changes at least. Belt and rollers only change by 24k-30k.

for easy to remember, i change EO/filter/final drive oil every 5k, clean transmission/clutch every 10k, change 3-in-1 & sparkies & clean air filter (K&N) every 20k. just my personal preference. btw, i also change EO/filter after each long distance tour.

3. Which bike shop will you recommend? I'm over at west side. I saw the list provided by Scoobydoo in the tech corner and it is such a long list. Haha

Normal service can just go Toh Guan or Bukit Merah area. Specific to scooters then must visit scooter shop, like AC, Future or even K & T.

if your neighborhood bike shop know's where the EO/drive drain plugs are and how to do it properly, no problem going to them. i'm staying at CCK and go Future Scootering for normal servicing mostly, sometimes AC Motor.

4. What are the things I must look out for with this bike?

Never use normal gear oil or too thick EO (15w50) for the transmission.

Battery must be in good condition. Fix a voltmeter for early warning.

although no "concrete" proof to support, strongly suggest do not use the normal gear oil for the final drive, manual stated to use 10w40 motor oil. problem is that many if not most workshop will tell you to use gear oil and usually will tell you they have SW customers using without problem. fact is, 2 of our bros had to change their SW's final drive gears and bearings after using gear oil for touring; repairs cost about $550. gear oil for singapore riding maybe ok, but a definite no for touring.

5. And any great advice you can give me.

Never park facing downwards if need to reverse.

Sharp turning the bike at too slow a speed (or pushing) might drop. Got leg use leg.

Don't enjoy too much and forget about other traffic.

take care of the bike and it will take care of you... enjoy it and ride safe :p

Thanks in advance!

If u stay west area, n dont wanna travel far out, for eo n basic maintenace, u can go unique at toh guan.

Their servicing pricing very competitive. However, i do advise u try to be a regular at one of those scooter specialist shop. Long term wil b good for u. :)

Regarding engine oil, went JB Honda bike shop (the one near malaysia custom ,very NEAR Citibank), They recommended me engine oil for scooter (white bottle one litre cost about RM20) Any advice to use this engine oil? What the brand engine to use it JB since we go there to pump petrol and wash bike.

Good advice about parking facing downward! I got a bad experience in JB, ALMOST cannot moved the bike up, very heavy...old already...no IPPT for me..

moving bike up is one thing, bigger problem is that "holding angle" for main stand is reduced by the same gradient (degree) of slope with head facing down. i.e. at more than gentle slopes, bike may roll forward and off the main stand when it receives a light "bump". some people don't care if they (or their bags) knock or scratch your bike when passing by :flame:

on the other hand, the "holding angle" for main stand is increased when head is parked facing up slope, the bike sits "deeper" into the main stand making it more secure. disadvantage is, you'll need more strength to free it from the deeper holding angle and push it down the main stand. got good got bad lor.

advise... avoid parking at steep slopes if possible. if really bo pian, may consider head up (never head down) on side stand and make sure hand brake is on. lagi kiasu? have something to tie the left brake level in (activate both front & rear brakes) :p

most of our kakis change EO in Singapore, so unable to advise on whereabouts and brands/makes for change in JB.

basically, good to stick with major/reputable brands and make sure it has ratings as stated in manual:

* SAE 10w40 (10w30 not recommended for our climate)

* JASO MA / API SG or higher

* friction modifiers (e.g. graphite/moly additives) doesn't really matter cos SW uses dry clutch

use car EO which are more economical?

hmmm... i've never tried before and don't intend to.

some riders feel that since scooters use dry clutch, car or bike EO also can.

check with big bro Scarab, he tried :p

Clutch slippage

Posted

sound could be a combination of few factors:

* sound could be from belt slippage and/or clutch slippage (if "pigeon" sound)

* belt slippage could be due to worn belt and/or work variator plates and/or lotsa dirt/dust

* clutch slippage could be due to worn clutch pads and/or worn bell and/or lotsa dirt/dust

chowtar smell is very likely from the "burning" clutch pads due to slippage, pads are rubbing the bell surface instead of gripping the bell firmly.
