Simi twin?

Versys also twin. Tenere and GS800 also twin.

No understand lah. As long as SW remains 'smoothest' and 'quietest' than those above can liao.

My wrist is weak... so not comparing 'power'...

The C650 GT may be more "smoother" and "quieter" than a SWING.

there was actually a "heated" discussion on whether parallel and inline twins are the same... lets not go down the same road

this is parallel twin in action: 360 degrees

this is inline twin in action: 180 degrees

this is crankshaft at 270 degrees

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBkcZlPcXm4&feature=related

* some pp think ALL 3 are the same by virtue that the engines have twin cylinders running parallel to each other... they are not wrong in this sense.

* others still want to follow the old school theory that differentiates between the two engines with parallel cylinders based on their differing firing/crankshaft arrangements... they are also not wrong.

its up to us whether we want to adopt which school of thought.

maybe its like chicken... sinkapor chicken or tomgyum chicken, both are chickens that run on 2 legs

"Difference between Inline Twin and Parallel Twin?"

http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/universal-threads/12923-difference-between-inline-twin-parallel-twin.html

guess this chap sums it all up...

Taking the example of a 2-cylinder engine:

Most companies/people use "parallel" to denote the engine cylinders being parallel to each other in layout. This would differentiate it from the V-Twins or the Boxer engines.

But then, there is the usage of parallel to denote the actual pistons' position w.r.t each other. Here parallel denotes both pistons moving up and down simultaneously. The opposite here would be "inline" in which the pistons move opposite to each other.

Inline engines rev higher, parallel ones have good low-end torque.

Chris Pfeiffer's F800R is a parallel twin.

After a little bit of googling I read that there is also a general usage of the word "parallel". In this the cylinders are parallel and the pistons may move together or in an opposite motion.

Conclusion: It's all in the word. There may be specific labels like Dual-Inline and all but I guess we know the general idea.

I hope this clears up confusion.

other than pistons moving in different manner, any other difference? this is an interesting input from the discussion...

The major point why you will generally only find inline twin engines is that the dynamic balance of a inline twin is much better than a parallel twin. A parallel twin has a dynamic balance that is the same as a single cylinder engine as the pistons move up and down together. In an inline twin they move in opposite directions thus canceling out some of the second degree vibrations that a single cylinder (and a parallel twin) engine would have. An inline twin does have a sideways rocking vibration around its central axis, but that's a much less then any vibration from having your pistons move together.

In fact, the silverwing firing sequence is technology of the past. The new parallel twin/inline twin firing sequence is 270 degree apart which yield smoother operation. The Super Tenere and coming NC700x are using 270 degree parallel twin/inline twin engine.

the SW's parallel twin (both pistons moving up and down together in tandem) engine is still of the same design as when it was first launched in 2001. that's at least 10 yrs old tech but it sure is a very reliable and smooth engine.

yes, i think the inline twin engine of the C650 GT is going to be smoother and a lot more powerful :p

That one cannot fight... almost $10k more.

Just realised I'm only 25% of SW weight ... what if you drop bike, what's the best method to bring it upright? Advise appreciated, tks.

2011-Present: SilverWing SW-T400

2003-2011: X9 Evo

Posted (edited)

rule 1... don't drop

rule 2... bike drop, man don't drop

rule 3... both drop, safety come first

the SW is a rather heavy beast to lightweight riders like us but as long as we remember not to out-muscle the beastly ¼ ton loaded weight, we should be ok.

bringing a heavy bike up needs a little technique, which is taught and TP tested for Class 2 license.

trick is to tilt/push the "dead" weight up, making use of the more massive parts of our body (usually the butt), not just the arms... see these demo videos, including girls lifting the massive goldwing :p

bike fell on left:

bike fell on right:

during the class 2 sessions, we were taught a slightly different/simplified technique, probably because the bike is not as heavy. instead of using the "full backside" as in the videos, we used the side/hip to help tilt/push the bike up. some of us do it with both hands on the handlebar (turned to max and locked in position), activate front brake to prevent bike from "sliding", and heaveeeee :p

for SW, advisable to activate the hand-brake and/or lift the side stand (if bike falls on right) as extra safety if possible :thumb:

cheers

SW very low CG and seat height should be able to balance well with both feet.

But so expensive you better treat it like a treasure and don't take it for granted.

Ride carefully. Push carefully. Park carefully. Clean carefully.
