Seniors...need some advice.

Bot my brand new SW last year Dec...in less than 12 months, my battery died, totally flat with no symptoms before that. Went to Ah Boy and bot a replacement, everything back to normal.

Mileage now about 7700km, no mods, service by Boon Siew since still under warranty. Daily travel about 35km, weekends seldom used. But I always ride with high beam on.

Question: Is it normal that the stock battery cannot last 12months? My brother say something must be wrong with the battery charging, alternator or something else. Should I bring it back to Boon Siew for a check since it is still under warranty?

Anybody have the same issue before?

Thanks to many seniors like Scoobydoo, Ive learn so much about our swt. @ 25km major replacement done;

1) v belt

2) brake pad front

3) spark plugs

4) coolant

The replacement diablo scooter tyres tat you recommended is the best thing Ive done so far. The stock IRC tyres very lasting, they still have more than the min tyre depth @ 20,00 km. The diablos are far more grippier than IRC.

Also i think i never say hi b4, hi.

Hmm... front brake pad?

I thought the rear would use up faster.

Btw, the belt compartment got 1 foam air filter. That one must also clean.

Arboh, the air intake restricted cannot cool the compartment. I always wash it after a few months.

Don't ride with high beam leh.

If kena shine, other riders can't see a thing due to the glare from the mirrors. Very dangerous.

Do note that BOTH headlights would be on when you switched to high beam.

Considering that you travel such a short distance daily, the charging might not be sufficient.

For faster charging, you can consider a Lithium batt next time.

My lithium is 3 years already.

Which model of battery did you buy from LAB and paid how much?

Recommended batt for SW is YTZ12-S (stock) YTZ14S (~$140+, bigger capacity but same physical size), smaller batts like YTx9-bs can also crank the SW but it's not going to last long, i tried that batt before (also from LAB).

Back to your Question: Is it normal that the stock battery cannot last 12months?

It is unusual (not impossible) for a new battery to spoil within few months unless it has been abused or not properly charged.

Possible causes could be the battery isn't a new one to start with, or suay suay it's a manufacturing fault, or some bad connections/wirings are draining the battery even when bike is parked, or like your brother say, problem with charging system.

Since your bike is still under warranty, suggest you send your bike back to BS to test the charging.

Similar thing happen to me when my bike was just few months old, bike couldn't restart after when I pulled-over at Sheares Bridge and stopped engine to make a phone call. Left bike with BS for 2+ days of testing and magnetic coil was changed under warranty.

If you want fast, consider go to workshop (e.g. ACM) and get mech to check the charging (under right side pillion foot rest)... if insufficient current at output, confirm charging got problem. If so, change battery won't solve your problem.

cheers

Added:

Forgot to mention cost... change magnetic coil, engine oil and labour costs around $300+, also depends on what grade eo you change too. BS standard practice is to collect existing eo and put it back in :p
