Hi bro, is there difference between coolant tank and radiator?

Thanks bro. I think got difference, fluid tank is for fluid storage and also as a source of fluid supply. While a radiator is for cooling the fluid. Biker_81 have changed it twice. I assumed it is the radiator he had changed, but just used the same item name that he mentioned for convenience sake. I pity him but can't help him. He have already done the initial step of troubleshooting unfortunately problem still persist. If I were him , I will get a mechanic to dismantle the engine block , coolant pump, coolant hose and radiator to check for any foreign object trapped in it. Then purge passage and clean it if necessary.

Here is the cooling system diagram for your reference. Did the mechanic bleed the cooling system during the coolant change, air trap in the coolant system can cause hot spot, there is a procedure in the service manual, also, was the thermostat tested, if is partialy stuck closed, it can overheat the cooling system.

Thanks for all the advice...I am sorry for late reply.... really quite trouble by this problem.. I change the coolant

tank ( a white container with hose connect to it))for $100 dollar twice. Because my mechanic workshop is small

scale. my mechanic need to order. I wait for a week plus for the coolant tank to come. And I attach the photo of the coolant leaking out..(sorry not clear). Really appreciate all for the advice. at least now i had a clear picture what to look out for.IMG_0033.jpg

I guess only left 3 options....

1. let my mechanic know things mention above..hopefully he can solve my bike problem.

2. change to taihin workshop for repair( cos scooter specialist workshop as advice by friends)

3.sell off the bike(scare the high temp is doing alot of harm to my bike engine)

really appreciate all for the advice...

thank u so much

I helped few bikers overcame the overheat problem by installing a supplementary ETC (electronic temperature controller), the latest version 3 is very effective to turn on the cooling fan at 70/75 deg C instead of the mechanical thermostat at 100 deg C. The ETC helps to cool the engine better and protect the cooling system and prolong the gasket of the engine and other heat path, since version last year till now, no one have any problem.

For newer bikes, this prevent overheating problem from developing, for bike already have minor heating problem, this solved the problem, for bike with several heating problem, this may help to reduce the temperature, if all other repair work doesn't seem to work.

If anyone is interested, PM me for discussion, the price is around $200 including installation, 3 months warranty on product. Next batch of controller will be in by end Apr/early May.

Bro biker81, I am wondering why u change Ur coolant tank twice. Are u referring to the reserve tank? If it is, I think u r not solving the root cause. From Ur picture, are u over filling Ur reserve tank? I think U should look into it deeper. It could be a radiator or piping choke issue. Can u let Ur bike idle and see if the fan is running when Ur temp increase. Do u see water leakage from engine? Actually there are many areas to check but I think I have limited knowledge. Need u to feed us more info.

Main causes of over heating can be due to the following:

1. gasket leak - 70%, due to engine over heat, happen around 2 years or 15,000km, need overhaul

2. choked hoses - 10%, high pressure flash usually can solve the problem, worst case replace hoses

3. choked radiator - 40%, usually if radiator choked, hoses may also choked, flash radiator, if still persist, need to replace radiator

4. failure of thermostat - 20%, seldom happen, if happened, need to replace thermostat

5. failure of thermo switch - 50%, life span around 2 to 3 years, need to replace item

6. failure of cooling fan - 20%, life span around 3 to 5 years, need to replace item

The main cause of overheating usually due to lack of coolant flash every year, poor quality coolant used can also develop multiple problem on the overall cooling system.

Some simple check:

1. coolant flow - open radiator cap when cold, start engine and see if any flow of coolant, need to run till engine hot or overheat, if flow is present, the circulating of coolant is ok

2. when temp over 3/4, the cooling fan should turn on, if not, the switch or fan may be faulty or radiator coolant is not fully flowing properly

3. if smell sweet smell from exhaust, very likely is gasket leak, need to overhaul engine, gasket leak can also check via open the exhaust valve cap, if coolant (green or blue liquid) is seem, confirm gasket leak into engine

Recommendation is sell off the bike if gasket leak is found, as even overhaul may not be able to root off all problems, prevention is to use ETC to replace/supplement temperature control as turn on at 75 deg C is recommended than the 100 deg C set by SYM via mechanical switch, as engine temp will be over 120 deg C and the composite material gasket will degrade very fast, most 2 years and start leaking.

Good luck bros/sis.

any recommended shop in the EAST that stock SYM spare parts to do servicing ? preferably around tampines area.

I do search and De Xing, Sun Rise, and M (at changi road) come out as result (recommended before in this thread). But not sure if they have spare parts or just do very common thing like oil change only.....

I have this problem too. No one could help me because I haven't heard of anyone with similar problem until i came across your post.

2year old bike.

I get up to 3 or 4 bars while riding, then coolant starts to boil and coolant start leaking out onto the tarmac.

I have done the following to rectify the problem. But to no avail.

changed the coolant reserve tank 3 times. 3 times leak. due to high engine temp causing high temp built up

flushed the raidiator 2 times with high pressure flushing.

changed all raidiator hoses, and thermostat.

I have got the engine checked by 7 different workshops and none could find the problem.

Checked head gasket, perfect condition.

So what next? change engine?

So this is an unidentified problem for me.

I have done all that I can do.

Got so fustrated and worried. I sold the damn scooter.

First I thought it was only me unlucky. after reading your post, I realised it could be a mfg design / engineering problem.

Sad to say, I enjoyed riding the SYM, but I am never buying another one again. Lost confidence.

Do update here when you have solved the problem i failed to solve.

Damn sad because I liked the scooter. Can go chinatown shopping and load all goods onto scooter. very convenient.

Very bitter over this experience.

you have to judge for yourself if what the mechs diagnose makes sense. I have heard the most ridiculous diagnosis from mechanics.

I say its rubbish.

Bro, so sad to hear you sold your ride, I tot you have solved the overheating problem.

The trouble for SYM is the design and material used, it based too much on Suzuki technology which is not very reliable as compared to Honda even Yamaha.

You should have try the ETC before you sold your ride since you have almost done total renewal on the cooling system, only the last part which is the temperature set by SYM is not rectified.

I have done more than 10 SYM and few other brand scooters with ETC installation and so far it resolved the overheating problem, all the owners are happy with the result.

You may try other scooter like PGO, especially with air/oil cool engine, quite good and less headache although the look is less impressive than SYM. The good storage space is also what I like.

Bro, its a lost to sell away ur GTS scooter.. I experienced ur problem bro.. Exactly same as urs.. Changed same parts as urs.. But u didnt changed the coolant radiator.. The coolent radiator is the main problem..

Its tend to chocked if the coolant radiator starts to rust inside it..no matter how many times u flushed ur coolent radiator the rust will still be there.

I decided to changed the radiator & hoses together.. All problem solved till now.. Its served me well after the major hiccup.

Hi Bro, at first the bike overheated. So changed whole lot of stuff. also flushed radiator.

after flushing radiator, the bike no longer overheats. Everything running cool.

But then....... one fine day, the coolant reserve tank gave a loud POP followed by a HISSSS, and coolant on the tarmac.

The tank leaked again. WITHOUT OVERHEATING THIS TIME.

Even without overheating, the pressure built up is great enough to break the tank.

So i i've had enough.

Also, the bike started to give me other funny problems.

$300 bro....... Frankly i encounter same major problem as u.. Changed same item as u, including down engine to changed the top block gasket.. I too almost gave up with SYM, till i told myself ok last chance to changed to a new coolant radiator with all coolant hoses changed.. To my surprise, all the overheating problem solved.. Mine is a three years old scooter which i bought 2nd hand and it served me well closed to 5 months now after the overheating problem repaired...
