scale. my mechanic need to order. I wait for a week plus for the coolant tank to come. And I attach the photo of the coolant leaking out..(sorry not clear). Really appreciate all for the advice. at least now i had a clear picture what to look out for.

I helped few bikers overcame the overheat problem by installing a supplementary ETC (electronic temperature controller), the latest version 3 is very effective to turn on the cooling fan at 70/75 deg C instead of the mechanical thermostat at 100 deg C. The ETC helps to cool the engine better and protect the cooling system and prolong the gasket of the engine and other heat path, since version last year till now, no one have any problem.

For newer bikes, this prevent overheating problem from developing, for bike already have minor heating problem, this solved the problem, for bike with several heating problem, this may help to reduce the temperature, if all other repair work doesn't seem to work.

If anyone is interested, PM me for discussion, the price is around $200 including installation, 3 months warranty on product. Next batch of controller will be in by end Apr/early May.

interesting device, but what if it fails? means fan will never turn on at all ? i am just curious, and how will it tell you if it fails? you must know that it is heat containment we are talking about here. once heat goes out the window, say good bye to engine ... overhaul.

Hi Bro, at first the bike overheated. So changed whole lot of stuff. also flushed radiator.

after flushing radiator, the bike no longer overheats. Everything running cool.

But then....... one fine day, the coolant reserve tank gave a loud POP followed by a HISSSS, and coolant on the tarmac.

The tank leaked again. WITHOUT OVERHEATING THIS TIME.

Even without overheating, the pressure built up is great enough to break the tank.

So i i've had enough.

Also, the bike started to give me other funny problems.

you know when i read posts like this who i blame? work shop .... there are too many un qualified work shops ... its just that we are riding a good bike that needs proper servicing.

I have this problem too. No one could help me because I haven't heard of anyone with similar problem until i came across your post.

2year old bike.

I get up to 3 or 4 bars while riding, then coolant starts to boil and coolant start leaking out onto the tarmac.

I have done the following to rectify the problem. But to no avail.

changed the coolant reserve tank 3 times. 3 times leak. due to high engine temp causing high temp built up

flushed the raidiator 2 times with high pressure flushing.

changed all raidiator hoses, and thermostat.

I have got the engine checked by 7 different workshops and none could find the problem.

Checked head gasket, perfect condition.

So what next? change engine?

So this is an unidentified problem for me.

I have done all that I can do.

Got so fustrated and worried. I sold the damn scooter.

First I thought it was only me unlucky. after reading your post, I realised it could be a mfg design / engineering problem.

Sad to say, I enjoyed riding the SYM, but I am never buying another one again. Lost confidence.

o noes u sold it ... i hope the new owner good luck

1. what are the legal mods available to a GTS 200?

the 1 i know : a - pipe certain model legal, b - the clutch system?, LED brake lights/indicators etc, foot rests,

can some one help to list certain mods you did with picture and where you did at ?

also is changing the wheel rims to another model legal? example chromed?

The ETC is an additional add-on to the original thermo-switch, so even if it does fail (man will die also, so everything will fail someday), the original 100 deg C thermo-switch still there to back the last line of defend.

The whole issue for SYM design is the length between the engine (heat) and the radiator, it is 'far away' and by the time the heated water coolant reached the radiator, the temperature already drops quite a bit, hence after about 2 years (or around 20k mileage), the hear transfer properties is less effective and many time the thermo-switch failed to turn on the fan even when the temperature is over the design limit. Coolant is very sticky liquid and if not fluid every year, the flow rate can greatly reduced (hoses, radiator, etc) due to choked partially, this is the main cause of over-heating.

Whether ETC good or not is up to users' own experience, it is relatively expensive add-on, but it solved the problem and gives good prevention before more damage to the engine and whole cooling system.

All the May stock of 50 pieces are all taken up, if it is not good, why riders installed it?

Workshop is just the location for work to be carried out, the people working on your bike is the utmost important success factor. If he treat your bike like his own and really put in 'heart' when do the work, your ride will have the best care given.

There is no radiator pump but only coolant pump to force circulate the coolant (cool return coolant) from radiator to the engine, the thermostat open/close the flow of coolant so temperature can rise quickly when cold start in the morning, the thermostat open when the temperature is high enough to let the coolant flow to the coolant system, mainly the radiator (hot return) to cold down, so as long as there is flow (can see from radiator top opening), the thermostat is working.

Hi all, just bought a 2nd hand GTS200 2 days back (5 yrs old). very different from riding a KR150 (which i did for the past 4 years) need some posture adjustment. Anyway after reading some of the recent post, found out the cooling system is not very robust, so will need to tell my mechanic to flush radiator and change coolant every 2 times EO change. Anyone know what is the capacity of the fuel tank? just now i pumped in >10liters of fuel and to my surprise there were no overfilling. decided to stop. even with sidestand, can't see the petrol level after opening the filler cap and shine with torch light. what is the general FC that your guys are seeing?
