[Technical] Engine Oil - All related matters in EO

Recommended Posts

Standard rear sprocket for TA200 appears to be a size 41. There shouldn't be any issues pertaining to switching sprockets so long as they fit the shaft diameter. It's a custom after all.

Standard ratio is great for commuting in traffic, powerband optimised for 40-90kph. Rather than revving the bolts out of the engine for highway sprints, sprocket ratios are the easiest, and cheapest way to increase cruise velocity. Besides, being able to go faster at lower RPMs means less engine wear and heat.

Of course, the usual response is that "omg, change sprockets then no power!"

Well that's what tuning is, match the rider's preferences. In our case there's plenty of low end torque to play with so lower RPMs are not a bad thing... and besides, there are 6 gears. Which is plenty.

Just that the stock gearing is -really- short and probably designed for a Thai traffic jam. Short gearing is also a good marketing strategy as it automatically makes the bike accelerate faster (ie, appearing to be more powerful).

But I don't want to be forced to go 7000RPM or so on top gear just to hit highway speeds!

Bel-Ray Thumper according to other PKs is great oil for our single bangers and I don't doubt it!

I did some test for my phantom these 2 days and realise that if i warm up longer then 5 mins my gear is smoother compare to 5 mins and below.

Kalyan what rear sprocket brand are you currently using? How about chain?

I just wish that phantom have an RPM meter or can we fix one to it?

Posted

Your first experiment with motor oil viscosity vs temperature :D

RPM meter - yes, possible to fix. I intend to get a tiny little rpm meter. Maybe scavenged off a scrapped ah pek bike like CM125 or GN125.

I believe you just have to run a cable to the spark plug cable to get a reading, and maybe a second wire to get lighting for this meter.

---

Sprockets - I'm using the standard 41 teeth sprocket at the rear. No idea what is my front sprocket as I haven't disassembled my left hand engine/transmission cover yet. Right now the bike is on OEM parts, ie, stock.

Current chain is DID O-ring, which was secondhand but no trouble with it. Little to no change in tension after 7000km. Properly lubed, as those who use self-oiling devices can attest to, chains are really durable.

I've done a thousand miles (1600km) over 2 weeks so time for an oil change... I had plans to 'upgrade' to fully synthetic but as the dealer couldn't make a delivery over the weekend, I'll stick with Motul 5100. Still seems like the bike is getting more smooth and responsive each passing day :3

(unlike everyone else I did a racing style break in)

Posted

What's the diff with O-rin and X-ring? I saw something like RK-ring or something.

I just took out my left cover set for the front sprocket, it was horrible. Full of dirt and oil. Took time to clean it. Will have to use de-greaser next time.

Posted (edited)

RK is a brand of chain - X ring is currently the most advanced chain. Can read up on wikipedia if you want, or other motorcycle websites.

Why have rubber seals in between the rollers? To pack in lubricant/grease. Light duty chains like that on cubs don't have O rings usually, unless you want to pay lots of moolah.

As such their chains need to be adjusted on a more regular basis, especially those $10 chains. Adjust every week lol.

A counterpoint to my above experiences is this site:

http://www.quality-cycle.com/truth_about_motorcycle_chains.htm

Which more or less states that with proper lubrication, all chain types today are definitely capable products. And X-rings to the site author is king.

However in the real world, there exist Z rings W rings XW rings, but O rings work well enough in all practicality. Plus, we're on Phantoms... only 200cc.

Here's some discussion on all the rings. With the exception of onion rings, maybe.

so far d new EO quite ok... vibrations d same as usual, but i feel pickup is much better.. gear changes very smooth n light...

A ride a day, keeps the doctor away!

Ie just make sure you don't ride on a totally rusted chain, which is only possible if you neglected it for a whole year of rain riding.

Oh and if there's a FCUK brand chain I want it :3 But I don't think French Connection UK deals with auto/moto parts lol

Changed my EO at planet the other evening for the "1000 mile" interval using 15W50 Motul 5100. I think I shall be sticking to this oil type on a long term basis. It's a bit thick at 50-weight but after a while it shears down a bit and the engine remains utterly smooth and powerful throughout.

When this EO is drained it comes out in a pretty good condition ie, not sludged over, etc.

Make sure to tighten oil filler cap with a plier to prevent oil from evaporating out.

CHEX 9000 -

Decided on this 10W40 full synthetic oil as my engine is -very- loud running 20W50. Also I wanted a synthetic for quite some time for better cold start protection, and high temperature performance.

Chex is really cheap and was the only API SM spec 4T on the shelf so I passed it on to Dr Chong to do the honours. I'm quite impressed with the smoothness of this German oil and the engine does become very much quieter running the lighter oil. I'll update here as I subject the new oil to the usual abuse, if it can last longer than Motul 5100 without excessive noise or half of it evaporating away suddenly like last week.

I went on last night's marathon outing on a reserve supply of Castrol 10W40 which -does- tend to give you a roaring powerful engine note but with horrible mechanical noises!

Posted

I judge mainly by the level of machinery noise as well as a predetermined timer. EO degrading can be felt by the way the gears feel as well - and I always change at the thousand-mile mark (1600km) or earlier. Wet common sump engine - the more fresh oil the merrier.

---

Should you use full synthetic 10W40 for your Phantom?

At only $16, why not?

Chex9000 made my engine smoother, quieter and more importantly, runs at lower temperature. Synthetic is known for improved cold start performance and it's brilliant in this department. Doesn't act and sound like a steam train in the mornings.

15/20W50 is heavier/thicker - makes a nice roaring sound but the manifold pressure to me is alarming.

Well if you want a brutal loud death metal kind of engine sound then Castrol 10W40 is awesome in this department. You can literally hear everything grinding and clanking around inside LOL.

I believe 8.30am the Koon will open; as I haven't been there I can't comment on the brands he carries.

Just don't let the uncles dispense "engine oil" from that strange looking oil drum in the back (PK undercover intel!). Lord knows what is in there, could be from the time of Sir Stamford Raffles from all we know.

Chex9000 @ 1400km, approaching the thousand mile interval;

Oil consumption is zero, bike starts very easy, and is starting to run very quietly. Big low end torque from 0-90kph (DIY mods) and didn't explode after riding day and night in the mega convoy.

Settings are slightly lean and hot, where Motul 5100 starts vaporising off to somewhere I don't know.

I might stick to Chex permanently.

Posted

Well honestly its not a very known brand to most people right? That's what they said so they didn't take it. I would love to try chex 9000 soon, all the good results people post here including you. Can't wait till my mileage hit 13k first, then will go change.

Hi people!! few days back i went to planet to get my EO change. I decided to change to Chex 9000. It was alright on the day i change the EO. But the next day, problem start to arise:

1-engine was very noisy and increased vibration, especially at high speed (80-100 km/h).

2-decreased pick-up.

3-my ride was not smooth.

4-my engine was suddenly off when i was riding. which really piss me off!!! it might be the EO. yet to check the rectifier.

I used Caltex havoline 4T before i switch to Chex 9000. As the feedback was good. Seriously, it was a big mistake!

Im using caltex techron gas.. I dont think chex 9000 is compatible with caltex gas.

LESSON TO BE LEARN: Stick to one EO that is suitable for your bike.

My personal opinion.

Im riding phantom TA200.

Interesting, I gained power from Chex in the long run, as the engine was running much quieter and cooler allowing me to tune some settings more aggressively to make use of the oil's capability, without compromise to drain intervals.

Infact the oil was serviceable up to 2000km without loss of lubricating performance. That's something I don't enjoy with some other oils which cost the same or more, as I would sooner notice the usual symptoms of surplus mechanical noises, stiff gears, etc.

Right out from the shop, Castrol oil produced a very powerful and loud engine, which got louder and louder as days went by because the crap oil couldn't take the punishment at high rpms and temperatures causing metal-metal contact. Thus, performance may not be equal to protection.

And we all have our individual preferences (the engines too, apparently).
