went to mustafa intending to get Maxima 20w50 synblend ($16) but i saw other maxima with different grading.. so i was confusing about the types of grading..i prefer to have less vibration when at higher speed so wat type of grading should i use? oso is it possible to use the EO i bought when i send my bike for service?

Do a goggle for a scientific write up on engine oil ratings.

In short 20w50 is much thicker then 10w40. There are also synthetic, semi synthetic and mineral oil. For better gear shifting, use a thicker oil, for a quieter ride, use a thinner oil. But..... dun expect too much :thumb:

About DIY oil change, i do not reccomend that. We'd usually round our nut, take a hell of a time and improper disposal of eo is bad for gaia. perhaps thats just me! Yes. you can bring to other shops to do it for you.. but at a $2-5 extra service charge... heck.. just use what they have to offer man!

Then I will have to go kaki bukit and buy a few bottles of Chex 9000. Lazy to go all the way there. Then just change at unqiue Motorsports and others.

No need to buy a few bottles lar bro. The engine oil 1 bottle is cheap already. Want to change just go workshop change nia. Not so troublesome. :cheeky:

I think for motul the price would be over $25 for all EO they have. I bought from Unique Motorsports at toh guan. You can read my reviews on the top there.

As for 20W50 I dun think have. But maybe 15W50? You can try there. I bought my Pirelli tires on that day too :p

I confirm that certain brands of oil have low flash points leading to evaporation of EO.

Chex 9000 is a newer SM formulation that has greater stability, lower oil drag and quieter running capabilities. And it's also cheaper than your many-years-old Motul full synthetic.

As for 10W40 vs 15W50 - the thicker oil (50) will give better protection at high temperature conditions (wide open throttle on the highway). 10W40 will be quieter.

This goes all out of the window when considering synthetics, due to the advanced formulation and zero impurities (mineral EO is refined, synthetic is formulated in a lab).

Expect to hear your engine grinding to bits at high revs with lousy EO like Castrol the moment you hit the highway (oil can't take the abuse). Chex is only $6 more expensive than lousy mineral EO and runs much better.

As for API certifications - the "later" the letter, the newer the formulation. Newer formulations have to meet higher protection and fuel efficiency standards.

So between a API SJ $28 full synthetic and a $16 SM... go for the second one (Chex).

Got some new info on oil drain intervals... apparently on bikes with oil filters, synthetic EO can last more than 15 thousand miles easily, provided the filter is changed every 5k miles. However, we can't do that because of the lack of an oil filter.

I might try 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 km intervals just to see if it explodes. Possibly not a good idea on Phantom as it stresses the oil a lot, and no filter = little metal shavings flying around :p

I just went riding with my friend for 6 hours straight. Im not sure whether is it the engine oil but the longer hours my phantom is going the more smooth the engine is. Thottle is alot smoother, can reach 120km/h easily. And of course I just pumped v-power just now. =x Does that affect?

Motul is good!

I guess for me in singapore the roads are short have to max the feeling of each trip I make. So I really dun mind if it is a little more expensive for me, and unique motor is nearer for me. (:

i guess all EO are the same.. I went to long msia trips.. and trottling around 110km on my meter.. The longer i travel the smoother the engine goes.. But but... After the 2nd hour, i could not feel my hands.. Numb already...

Vpower gives us a little boost and it stinks.. The petrol fumes came out from the pipe stinks like no one business.. of cause with my Chain oiler, my ride is even smoother and quieter....

For the numb part I will agree on my old belray engine oil as for motul my hands will really fine, no numbness at all.

thanks guys for the help.. esp kalyan for that interesting stuff about EO..:D

i work wif EO every single day in an SAF workshop depot... but only deal wif heavy diesel vehicles.. we use standard grades for each type of vehicle, so nv really got into understanding the differences..

maxima extra a NO-NO for me ever again! definitely gonna try chex 9000.. any idea if planet opens on sundays?

jt, one thing about our aftermarket grips is that it has no balancer to reduce the vibration therefore we might feel more vibration on our handle compared to handlebars with balancer :thumb: once experienced even a 1hr ride at 100km w/t glove for me i will feel numb, tts y i prefer to have glove, reduce the numbness n vibration abit

Hi Bro Kalyan. I thought 15W50 is more quieter than 10W40 right? How come u said 10W40 is quieter than 15W50? Hmmm.... Now i confused...
