hey folks...just chiming in a bit of experience here...though not from riding since i haven't got my license :-)

i used to play a lot in a band and did a lot of private study around sound and how it affects the ear. one of my areas of interest was, sound isolation for the purpose of musicians. in order to play well, we need to be able to hear our instruments in the midst of others...without being drowned out by the drummer and guitarist (most of the time). one thing i looked into was in-ear monitoring, using headphones to monitor our own levels.

the thing is, most headphones do not have a good enough seal to isolate sound...so the ambient sounds aren't isolated out, and in the end you end up cranking the volume in your headphone which damages your ears.

i found that the best kinds are the in-ear buds that they sell...there is an entire range of them from different brands. the more well known ones are shure and ultimate ears. there are other brands too, just do a search. thing is, with ear buds, the ambient sound is isolated out pretty well, meaning you only need a low volume in your buds to hear clearly.

i'm not sure if riding with ear buds is a good idea. but if you want to protect your ears, look for headphones that can isolate sound so you don't have to blast your music.

enjoy and ride safe!

excellent info dude!

i am a true believer in protecting ur hearing too. i wear earplugs almost 99% of the time i ride. at first abit too quiet to hear anythin. but the human machine is amazing as it is able to adapt very well and get accustome to surroundings. now with earplugs...engine noice and wind noise cut off. all critical ambient sounds perfectly clear.

as for music... ur idea is ideal...but expensive.

if u have the money...invest in a bluetooth intercom like the scala q2 multiset. got radio/intercom/mp3. wear normal earplugs and strem music thru mini speakers in helmet.

cheaper alternative for hearing protection plus music or for those who no need intercom...

DIY Earplug earphones.

im using both now... perfect! :thumb:

i was thinking of that, coz my open face is M, flip up is L - And my open face is veli quiet while flip up more noisy. :( is that really the cause?

bro, flip up's will be noisier as there are more "ridges & contours" for the wind to generate noise

if you wanna reduce it, get a non flip up FF

but of course if you wear glasses, it could be a little inconvenient

size could be a factor too...

read this article, get a proper fit and it could help

hey guys i recently found a solution for this issue. Plus you can hear horn from others. Cut down noise level. Cos recently i was waiting for my jacket to dry and it rains so u put on a uncle rain coat with "hood". Thus i use the hood and then over with the helmet. Its good. Cos you wont get wet from the rain that seeps in from you collar and then you sweat wont get to the helmet and it greatly reduce noise.

Thus i think any wind breaker with hood can do the job. I hope this helps bros out there.

You can wear ear plugs. You will still be able to hear cars horning and even your own engine. Just that it's not that loud. I don't think ear plugs are meant to block off ambient noise totally. The idea is to reduce the noise level ..

that would depend on what ff you are wearing also.. some still have very loud noise wind.. which in long term might harm our ear drums if worn for prolong periods of time..
