Hmm why?

Fans are buying the club?

Today (Tuesday) sees the formal launch of what the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) call "The Ultimate Protest" - an attempt to buy the club.

Further details of the "Yes We Can" campaign can be found at the NUST website online http://www.nust.org.uk - who have released the following statement of intent:

Today the Newcastle United Supporters Trust formally launches an ambitious bid to take back our football club. We need supporters like Yourself to back a supporter takeover.

There are a number of ways to invest in the club and after discussions with serious Newcastle-based investors we believe that the time is right for the fans to lead the charge and reclaim their football club.

The investment is backed by a local consortium of companies advising the Trust, and we've made sure that any investment is safe and guaranteed to be returned to you if the bid fails.

The "Yes We Can" campaign will run for 6 weeks, and we have a financial target which we are not announcing yet, as we want to negotiate from a position of strength with Mike Ashley.

The fans can lead the way where others have failed - by standing together and investing together - we can make our club the shining beacon of honesty and integrity and bring the city together to save our club from the current regime, its mistakes and its calculated snubs.

When Derek Llambias said the fans could not buy the club - we said YES WE CAN - and now we aim to prove it with your support.

Newcastle United Supporters Trust on Behalf of the City of Newcastle and Geordies everywhere.

    NUST Press Release

Times newspaper coverage of the launch

A launch event in Newcastle on Tuesday saw NUST members meet the press, with further announcements to follow in due course regarding the business plan behind the scheme.

From our own angle, a succession of real and imagined bids have failed to bring about a change of ownership at SJP and in the meantime, the dignity and standing of the club has steadily been eroded.

Saturday's home game proved that unprecedented numbers of Newcastle supporters are sticking with the team, while demonstrating opposition to the current administration and their plans.

There's never been a better time to try and channel the energy of those protests into something tangible. That's why we're pleased to support the efforts of these lads & lasses and interested in the detail of their proposals.

As more information emerges, we'll attempt to keep you updated and chart the progress of the campaign.

Sting, Jimmy Nail join Newcastle fans takeover campaign

Newcastle United fans have managed to attract celebrities to their bid to oust current club owner Mike Ashley.

The Sun says celebrity supporter Sting is backing a Toon Army bid launched yesterday to get rid of the hated owner.

Ashley's controversial rebranding of St James' Park proved the last straw for thousands of unhappy fans, who are getting behind the Newcastle United Supporters Trust's Yes We Can campaign to buy the club.

Sting, plus fellow high-profile Geordies Jimmy Nail and Tim Healy, are behind the bid.

The former Police frontman called on Ashley to reverse his rebranding of Toon's famous home to sportsdirect.com@St James' Park.

He said: "I don't like it. I'm a traditionalist, it's St James' Park, always has been, always should be."

The campaign will last for six weeks, and NUST spokesman Neil Mitchell said: "It's the ultimate protest, an attempt to buy the club.

"After talks with serious Newcastle-based investors we believe the time's right for fans to lead the charge to reclaim their club."

Newcastle have completed the signing of Wayne Routledge on a three-and-a-half deal from Coca-Cola Championship rivals QPR.

The 25-year-old winger joins Chris Hughton's side for an undisclosed fee from the Loftus Road club.

Routledge, who has scored seven times in 49 appearances for the Londoners before his move to the north-east, was part of the Hoops side which drew 1-1 at St James' Park earlier this season.

The winger goes straight into the Magpies squad for Wednesday's game against Crystal Palace - the club where Routledge began his career at the age of 16.

He made 121 appearances for Palace and has since has stints with Tottenham, Portsmouth, Fulham, Aston Villa and Cardiff.

Routledge told the club's official website: "It's unbelievable really that Palace could be my first game. I've still got very fond memories of my time there. They were my boyhood team and I learnt everything I know at the club. So obviously it's a game I'm desperate to be involved in and just can't wait for it."

Portsmouth's Mike Williamson is expected to be next through the door at St James' Park. The club were rushing through the paperwork on Tuesday to ensure the 26-year-old is available to face Palace and help the Toon plug their defensive injury crisis with Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson injured and Ryan Taylor suspended.

Hmm Okay... Managed to beat injury stricken Crystal Palace 2-0 at home... We were far more than convincing. An own goal and a late strike by Nile Ranger sealed the win.

Anw, has Jose Enrique gone to another club or something?

Coventry striker Leon Best has joined Newcastle United on a three-and-a-half year deal.

Best has scored nine Championship goals in 15 games for Chris Coleman's side this season and played against his new club at the Ricoh Arena in December.

Sky Blues chairman Ray Ranson said: "The situation with Leon's contract has been well documented. When it was apparent that we couldn't agree terms for him to remain at Coventry City, we knew we would have to listen to offers and act in the best interests of the club.''

The Magpies moved for Best after their deal for new Wigan striker Victor Moses broke down. The club are still thought to be looking at bringing in Everton striker James Vaughan in on loan until the end of the season.

Newcastle have also confirmed midfielder Geremi has left St James' Park for Turkish club Ankaragucu.
