serious or not? from rusty to chrome again?

The closest to rust 'remover' I've used is by turning the rust (brown) into a hard layer of black coating.

If you find this product, that can turn the rust back to chrome I don't mind trying it. Maybe we can share a bottle to see how well it works?

From the picture, it seems to me the headlamp 'ring' has been changed. Sounds too good to be true

To do list:

- Steel brake hoses (In progress...)

- Rewire bike

- Repaint fairing and clean up bike

- Replace exhaust system (DONE!)

I've seen rust removers in the past do that very thing, but these ones are for coins etc. Usually the bottle says not to use on anionized aluminium (not sure if that's how it's spelt) which I think lots of cars & bikes have.

I'm interested too whether it works... anything that beats using steel-wool and elbow grease, which is a pain in the backside.

You can remove rust using Coke..No joke..Coca Cola removes rust..Not back to the condition when you first bought it but it can remove rust..Try it to believe it..There's some scrubbin needed tho..

I have tried to see things from your point of view..But no matter how hard I try..Or what I do..I just can't get my head that far up my butt..

But after removing the rust, need to coat a layer of protective grease right?

What is this grease called and where can buy?

becareful about using mild acid (coca cola) or abrasive stuff like brasso on your rusted surface. If the surface is galvanised carbon steel, the rust will surely return & spread to wider area , coz the zinc coating on the carbon steel has been scrubbed off deeper & further by the brasso or mild acid.

If the surface is not galvanised with zinc but has the normal primer & paint coating, the normal way is to sandpaper all rust , then spray with primer & epoxy paint.

For galvanised surfaces, i normally use something call Rust Converter which also acts as a primer. Can be bought from most hardware shop. It converts the rust & seal the surface permanently.

How do know it the surface is galvanised?

And after using the rust converter, will the appearance be very different?

Unless you sand the surface well, it'll be textured (rough, because of the rust) and black. Basically, it'll look like you spray painted the surface black. But, of course, the surface will be rust free, the rust having been converted to a black stable compound by the rust remover.

I recommend Pye's Rust Remover. It's only about $8, and since you brush it on, it can go a long way.

Think the rust converter cannot be used on exhaust watever which is not heat resistant will come off on the pipe. Anybody tried the de-rusting process (Forgot the name) using battery charger? Its quite useful and painless....but only successful on small objects.

If the surface is not painted & have spot rust, its probably galvanised. But due to scratches, the coating came off & therefore rusted.

I normally apply the rust converter on places like my bike's frame where there is chipped off paint & brown rust appearing. If i simply apply paint on the rust, it will rust again underneath the paint & it can spread like cancer inside the bike's frame.

So best is to apply the rust converter; which penetrates the porous rust , seals it & converts the brown rust to a black compound. After that, I can either paint it or leave it as it is.

Some of the bolts 's top head on my bike also rusted, they're probably galvanised carbon steel - since they're not painted. Likewise , a drop of the rust converter on them stop the rust completely. If I dun stop the rust, the bolt 's shape will be eaten by the rust & subsequently it will be difficult to open the bolt.

Hi Dudes,

i know of an alternative to remove rusty parts. the item is call "dusty sponge" you can get it from hardware stores. it's grey in color. initially it looks like aquarium filter but grey in color. application is simple. just peel a genrous amount from the pack and scrub the rusty portion with it. it removes the rust leaving the source (scar) where the rust originate from. for that, would need another stage of treatment.

last time, when we rode chrome GT bicycles, we would use this method to remove the rust and afterwhich, apply some clear oil or grease to prevent air from entering the "already damaged" portion. preventing further damage or rusting.

the dusty sponge is good for large surface and some tight corners but for nuts and bolts, forget abt them. just replace them. hope this helps.

As claimed, There's a need to drive when we have a Family. But all that is needed to ride is Dream... Many are still dreaming about it.

some rusty spots from chrome area, (i.e handle bar, engine guard, exhaust header) i use aluminium foil (kitchen use, comes in a roll).

wrap it in ur hand, and just rub over rusty area, it will not leave rough surface, and rust will be removed.

then i spray over the area with clear laquor paint. so far so good :thumb:

instead of clear lacquer, clear epoxy is more durable.
