Sanfu====>Not bad...mech that did my bike friendly..Chief Mech San also quite friendly...Do bike also not bad..May go down there do my FI servicing there....

what do you mean by FI servicing. Please be specific?

I've never tried Sanfu myself. But I've never based my trust on a mech just because he's friendly and tok cok with me and make me feel good. Vice versa, I would not write off a good mech just because he's not friendly.

And a change of sparkplug is hardly a task worth measuring a mech's capability. I can do that in 10mins probably.

Let me know what u intend to do regarding "FI servicing" and maybe I can give some inputs.

You are the second TLR I hear of rectifier spoiling. Suzuki electrics are supposed to be strong!

I've also never hear of the US guys complaining anything on rectifier problems. So could it be:

- Because our weather here is hotter

- Plus lots of stop and go

- Plus the fact that the rear cylinder is so near the rectifier

Then maybe overheating.

I've performed the Gap mod on my previous TLR and it runs cooler now with more air circulation.

You guys should try it. Only cost $15 for a sheet of aluminium.

Since u guys are V-TWIN lovers, anyone every consider of getting a suzuki SV1000s? It is also a v-twin bike, and also quite cheap too.

i guess like wise too.Perharps due to the heat.

Btw if more air goes in to that area, doesn't water gets in too??

well maybe u did the gap in this way that the air can goes in but not the water due to some angle restrictions i guess...

My mechanic recommand putting a thin Aluminium plate below it to dissipate some heat of that rectifier.

but i guess its just another wear and tear isuue .. :goodluck:

erm, sorry to be a bummer...

But there's a sticky or article somewhere in the forum about Rectifiers.

The gist of it is that, heat dun play so much of a factor. Some has even tried putting on PC fans on rectifiers with little effect. After all, the heat sink is able to handle the job well.

Its more of the rectifier working too hard. Red, you put three possibilities:

- Because our weather here is hotter

- Plus lots of stop and go

- Plus the fact that the rear cylinder is so near the rectifier

For me, I think 1 & 3 is out due to the abovementioned. Instead, I think its more of #2. Too many stop and go. Has an adverse effect on the battery. When battery starts to malfunction, the rec is the first to get it.

My humble opinions only....

Well, the verdict is out on my bike....

Good news and bad news.

Bad news is.... First 5 gear cogs are goners. Need replacements.

Good news is.... Surprisingly, the rest of the engine is in very good condition. Even after riding on a busted 4th gear. Hmm....

So, that's that. Mech is confirming the costs coz of the parts needed to be ordered and will get back to me. With luck, spares might be available locally and things can get fixed by this week.

Is it? I have not seen that article.

But if heat is not an issue for rectifiers, why are they designed with fins? Secondly, if you notice your rectifer mounting, they do not just screw it to the tray itself. Rather, it is screwed onto a small bracket, so that both sides gets airflow. I believe rectifiers needs cooling too. Or else they wouldn't go to such pains.

Shoei - Yes, I did my gap mod slightly different from the common one you see on TLplanet. Mine allows airflow from the front, not under. So water is not an issue. By the time the air travels to where it is (from the front, most water droplets should be deflected. Besides, I also got a hugger to prevent water from below (but actually bought it more to protect the Ohlins.)

Here it is...

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forum/index....s&CODE=03&ID=35

A snippet of it at the end...

"People think that they can save the r/r from dying by putting a PC fan on it. That's rubbish, it doesn't work. Although you might keep the externals of the r/r cool, it is the internals that fry - not to mention the leads 3 inches from the r/r where the fan isn't. The heat sink is OK, but the heat stress of being really hot in the middle and frozen cold on the outside where the fan is certainly doesn't make the situation any better either. Remember that it is not just the temperature that kills the r/r, is the current that it has to generate in the first place. You might be able to garner an extra couple of month's life out of the r/r but the wires with a fan just out of the r/r are still going to burn to a crisp too, when they go, they short and pow, up go your bike electrics. The r/r is still going to die - particularly if you draw large amounts of current out of it for periods longer than it's design life (which is the case of almost every honda r/r since the late 80's). If you use a r/r that can handle the current demands required, it won't die. Honda have ****ed up and just put on underqualified parts for the duty required. No other brand of bike has this problem and I don't understand why they persist in it."

Like I've said, heat plays a certain factor. Tats why it has heat sinks designed. But naturally, it should be able to handle the conditions (I've seen some PC CPUs operate at quite high temperatures but they only have heatsinks to cool them only).

Instead, I've always suspected its our riding style here (as you;ve suggested, too many stops and go) and addition of extra electrical devices (IU unit? other mods?). From what I understand from talking to a mech and several V-Tec riders (you know V-Tec rectifiers, rite? Very notorious to fail), a rec fails coz the batt is unable to sustain the require current most probably due to battery malfunctioning.

One suggestion I got from an uncle riding S4s for many years was to do a regular battery change. Suggestion given was 1.5 years per change. This is to prevent the rectifier from overworking due to battery malfunctioning. Result, well, my bro's V-Tec hadn't had a rec failure so far since the first one abt 2 years after he got his bike.

Just my humble opinion and a bit of personal experience....

1) The point of that is referring to use of fans on the heatsink... I wonder by allowing more natural air flow around the rectifier, the cooling is more natural/progressive, maybe the benefits are better?

2) I think that is a good practice. Agree.

Eh Dyl,

Just interjecting here, since we're on the topic of cooling.

Ever thought of using more intensive cooling methods to keep that rectifier chilly?

Taking from PC cooling, where they have so many fancy methods of mod cooling, from air to water, there stands one method that may or may not work in this application. Heh heh. Seems a bit far fetched, but what the heck...

TECs. Thermo Electric Coolers... or better known as Peltiers. Y'know... the semi-con plate that, under power, gets hot on one side, and cold on the other.... really COLD.

http://www.directron.com/tecinfo.html

Put the cold side on the r/r, with the hot side up and cooled by a fan + aided by airflow.

What do ya think?

A bit extreme right...

But it would be a good idea if I have a cruiser. I'll install it so that I can carry ice-cold beer around! Fook the rectifier!

Anything to keep that r/r from going nuclear while on tour right?

And beer helps too. Especially when you need the extra courage to kneedrag lower. :goodluck:

TPS - Needs checking and resetting if necessary

Injectors - Needs cleaning at periodic intervals

Throttle bodies - Needs balancing if rough idling

Fuel map - Needs remapping if u changed to a performance filter, exhaust or engine mods

TPS can DIY. Very simple. Injectors, just use OWS fuel system cleaner. TBs, go bikeshop do if u dun wana invest in Carbtune. Fuel map, remapping at only $50 at Bike lab.

can i check with u if u did the cleaning of the injectors yourself?DIY?

whats the recommanded interval for that??

do u have a TL manuel which u might wanna let go?

thanks pal
