Hi everyone,

A very simple question, I ran a search on the forum but didn't find an answer to it.

If you have a driving license (cars or whatever that has 4 wheels), you can apply for an international license (IDP) with the AA in Singapore.

Is there an equivalent for our riding licenses ? Or is it enough that we have a Singaporean riding license + International driving license?

Of course, to each overseas country its rules, but usually they require an International License, without stipulating if it's for cars or bikes - so I was wondering if in Singapore we could turn our motorbike license into an international one.

Thank you for helping and happy holidays !

If you're referring to the Automobile Association of Singapore, they only provide IDP (International Driving Permit) for .. well, cars ! It's $22. But I was wondering about the equivalent for motorbikes.

Maybe it doesn't exist and the IDP works for both... ?

Ermmm.....I have IDP.

Some countries does not require you to have motorcycle licence from your home country to rent, buy or ride their country's motorcycles. Some does.

And IDP is valid for year only.

The IDP has an endorsement for motorcycles. However its not broken into Class 2, 2a and so on.

Its possible to ride/rent in South East Asia without an IDP, but if the cops stop you and ask for one, you better have it on you, or else you will be paying a fine.

Thanks FB666Y for the info, most helpful, I'll make sure to ask them when I get my IDP.

And I do agree, it's best to have it, specially if you don't "look" local : in some countries the police targets tourists to fine them if they don't wear a helmet and/or don't have their IDP, regardless of the local rental flexibility.

Honestly, how many cops in around the region have really seen an IDP, and could read English ?

In Penang, Pattaya, Bali, you can rent a car or bike without even asked to show your IDP.

Once my friend who didn't even have a Class 3 was stopped by a cop in Bangkok, and he showed his PSA Pleasure Craft Driving Licence, and highlighted it was a "Driving Licence", and the cop looked at that licence, flipped it over a few times, and asked him to move on. We burst out laughing when we drove away

You can apply for the IDP online by sending them your ID photo, a cheque and a copy of your documents, and they'll send it back to you. You'd better get one if you're thinking of renting in Bali, the cops there use it as an excuse to shake you down since it's fairly obvious you're a tourist on a rented bike, I got stopped 3 times in one day.

There is no such thing as an international licence for any vehicle. IDP is just a translation of your licence into many languages and it will also include the bike licence if you have one. It is most useful in non-English speaking countries, and it also makes things easier if stopped by law enforcement. But in many places the Singapore licence alone is sufficient.
