sorry $10k cannot

For current 4.7% DBS pref. denomination is $10k but standard minimum is $250,000 nominal or 2500 shares.

so this means you can buy $250k $260k $270k $280k etc etc.....not $10k $20k .

for the previous 6% one the minimum is $100k or 1000 shares so you can buy $100k $110k etc....

10k can... New issue on wed. 4.7% retail perps. min quantums of 10k. Honestly felt that it's unfair to the bigger players that they're offering retail the same 4.7%. Makes it look stupid to buy in quantums of 250k.

oh retail issue..... subscribe thru ATM?

Yes it's not fair.

Bloody hell, they should pay me at least 5++%

but seriously $10k, might as well forget it....really

$470 in one year? whats the point ?

dun like that la.. Alot of us are poor folks... $470 can eat for 1 month lunch and 1 month supply of marlborrow.

i mean in the bigger scheme of things, $470 gets one nothing lah.

ok maybe a nice good pair of shoes or a riding jacket.

but over 1 year, with $10k i'd rather take more risk.

wouldnt you?

if 10k = 1% of my capital, i'll say yes to more risk exposure

but then, if 10k = 100% my capital, i will think 100x before i make a decision.

if $10k investment and more risk, what kind of investment would you consider as "more risk"?

Indexed funds?

Yeah... Probably like Throttle said. Single stock.. Doesn't have to be those high beta ones... Good Names still pay off significant returns...

However, if we had bought DBS instead of DBS 6% 9 years ago, we'll still be looking at losses. On that note, the preps did out perform the single stock...

Indexed Funds I dun really like.. But I've seen people make their money there too. Albeit on the slow side.. Some things to note on index funds are if the funds are synthetically replicated.. Tracking errors could often proof to be a headache as well.

End day people, there's no right or wrong... Preferance shares are not without risks.. If interest rates were to shoot up, we can bet that we'll be looking at paper loss to our preferance shares...

Now if I had 10k, what should I be looking at?? Hmmmmm...

Oh , wow I've been studying index funds, mutual funds so as to let the initial capital roll a bit, and reading the works of benjamin graham and buffett to try and buy a worthy first piece of stock, missed the last recession, and planning to aim the next... Ideally hope to pick up some blue chip stocks(Thats the term right? SPH, SIA, GIC are all blue chips? Sorry not too familiar with stocks side)...

You gentlemen mentioned investing in single stocks, do you plan to hold them long term and earn dividends + sell after a few years? Or let it rise a bit and then sell for quick profit?

Yep i read that, an along with almost all the Security Analysis books, except for the first two editions, can't seem to find em anywhere....

But mostly now, I am trying to learn in the way of Buffett, because well, Graham's principles are sound, but it is of my (biased and theoretical) view that since the 1930s till now, the stock market, industries, and other markets have changed significantly. Since Buffet is a student of Graham and Dodd, I also personally found that Buffet's methodologies are somewhat more practical and stands the test of time.

such books are philosophical and have high entertainment content.

reading it increases your general knowledge in various areas.

and may improve your big picture perspective, which is good

but not gonna help much making real money in trading in the market.

dont fall into the trap of thinking that such books are anything more than that

one of the golden rules in investments and speculations is, "when someone gains, someone else must loose", period.

think about it... if you n me n everyone also gains, where's the gains gonna come from?

when you sell you investment for profits, someone must buy right?

it all voice down to who's the unlucky fella holding on to the hot potato when the "bull" drops. winners would be those who successfully pass the hot potato on for someone else to get burnt.

ever wonder why investment gurus always encourage pp to invest? :cheeky:

Not true, the stock market is not a zero sum game.

It is base on valuation.

just like properties.

in other words technically, everyone can be a winner without any losers.

Do you gentlemen trade directly? Or go through brokerage services?
