Au5h,

What so serious that happened to your bike that (i'm guessing) your mech ask you to overhaul?

btw, you intend to top overhaul only or full overhaul?

cheers! :angel:

Just want to make my bike back to tip top condition man. I intend to stay with this bike until COE ends.

My Version S is 15 years old; bound to have wear and tear internally. That's why I want to overhaul. It's my personal choice; not my mech's. :)

And my Version S engine is still going strong; so want to maintain it.

About the cylinder head; I have a friend who gonna scrap his version S when the mechanic told him that his cylinder head has a major crack. Probably due to wear and tear AND lack servicing. So I just wanna know if anyone has other reasons for changing cylinder head.

Bro, depends on what you want eventually. For me, it's either i set aside a budget and go ALL OUT to bring my Ver S to optimal condition, or get a NEW Class 2 bike. The former will be the lesser of two evils financially; hence that's why I go for it. So now I set aside a budget of $5k for my Ver S.

I just had my engine fully overhauled which cost me close to $2k. It's running really, really smooth; no jerking during gear transition and all. Unfortunately, I didn't change the cylinder head, which I feel I should have. I can STILL feel there's "extra" hot air coming from right side of the cylinder head when riding for about 10 minutes. My hypothesis is there are tiny (micro) cracks inside the cylinder head which allows heat to escape. But all this while, it doesn't affect the performance of my bike or cause damage.

So now I have a remaining $3k to play with for performance parts and cosmetic modifcations or whatnot. When I sent for full overhaul, I request them to strip everything and send my frame for spray paint. I also include other parts like fork tube sliders (or cover) that I want to spray to save cost and "renew" my bike

My Version S is a work-in-progress now. My recommendation is if you wanna stick to your bike;

1. aim for at least 5-10 years of usage;

2. change the cylinder head with FULL overhaul. FYI changing cyclinder head is about $1800 including labour - hence if you change it when you overhaul, labour cost won't be factored in; and

3. optionally, go for performance and/or cosmetic modifications.

Hope this helps you to decide, optimally and economically. :)

if i had $5000, i would rather sell the bike n change to a newer bike. nowadays 400cc or even 700cc is only 1 or 2 cylinders which is quite fuel saving but still powerful. an old bike is still an old bike, no matter how much u do to restore it. I too wanted to improve performance of my ver s but ah chong was against the idea which I agrees with him. Now I will just do minimum to the bike mainly for transport purposes. I love to do up the bike 1 day but i know there r too many things to do n for a 15 years old bike, i think it is not worth it. This is my 2 cents

Yesterday just repaired my showa suspension for $175, quite happy with the result but have to wait for 3 weeks later before I know the worksmanship is really good. cos the last time i repaired them in JB but only lasted 2 weeks. My engine top gasket leaking oil, need to repair too which will cost $150 but ah chong only free after CNY. Now i only doing minimum to keep my bike going for at least another 1-2 years before i sell away

Just curious, what is ur current FC n top speed after overhaul? I just wondering how bad is the condition of my ver s... :)

I did it at Team HKL. I was contemplating between HKL and Planet Motor (Ah Chong's) actually.

Yeah I agree with you man; most people would prefer getting a new bike knowing the cost of repair is quite high. For me, since the engine is still working really well, I just wanted to customise my version S to my liking and ensure it is ride-able for a substantial period, say, at least 5 more years.

I haven't reach top speed because i'm still running in until i reach 1000km. As for the fuel consumption, it will reach 350 km before hitting on to the reserve, and max at 400 km full tank. That's about 25km/litre, and that has never changed since I bought it in 2006.

Then what's ur top speed before overhaul??? I feel mine underpowered but when asked ah chong to check, he said my engine running ok n advised me against doing anything to the engine or carburetor. I wanted to give a little more power to it as currently the top is only like 130km/h, i heard some ver s r clocking 160km/h almost effortlessly. n my FC is only 20km/l on the avg, at most 22km/l

i know this has been answered a few times but what exactly is the recommended tire size for our ver s? i heard max is 150 for rear but mine is 160

I have been riding a 16yr old Ver S for the past 8 months and sharing what i know / experience. FYI, my bike is purely for transportation purpose. Any feedback /suggestions are more than welcome here.

- Bought with a leaked Showa shocks rendering it almost useless. Shop refused exchange/swap so that's the last time i visit that shop for repairs (decided not to stress myself further on this). Bought RFY (aka China) shock online + RM30 installation = SGD$110 + good/ok ride with no complains so far (comparing apple to apple). My school of thought : $110 = proposed 24 mths +++ use btw changing interval is value for money for me rather than send the Showa for repair with no guarantee it will not leak again)

- Didn't know that I have been riding for the 1st 2 mths with a tube on my front tyre. after twice changing tubes, finally change to tubeless tyre costing me $120 + $30 front bearing replacement.

- Then scratching my head all the while thinking where has the coolant gone to (no sign of leakage at all). Decided to change the cap ($15+ : Ori Thai version) and prob resolved.

- Engine oil/ filter change (OWS promo) last Dec @ $89 + $190++ chain/sprocket replacements (both @ Unique)

- Now front left fork seal burst and repair cost = $60.

I foresee further repairs and pray the are only of minor scope and will not cost me my arm. If so, I think dats ok as it certainly serves my need. On average, full tank running @ 385 - 410 before hitting reserve. No prob hitting 140km/h but realised the horse tend to slog a bit to hit 160 (it's like a delayed speed incremental from 140 onwards, then with a sudden rush, it blasts to 160 easily: it this a norm for Ver S?)

Ultimately, it boils down to your need level and how far you want to go to satisfying it. I forgot to mention the cosmetic aspect of the bike which i rather not go in too deep :pity:

i wonder what is wrong with my bike, can only hit 120-130km/hr n only clock abt 310km max before hitting reserve. if the bike can go fast n FC no good, i can understand but my bike can't go fast n still consume so much petrol... :(

Perhaps you can bring to yur mech to check, and share what are the cause(s) ?

Any experienced snrs and bro-has here can share their thoughts on this?

Before overhaul, I did go 130 km/h with no problem. Going beyond 130 I will have problem - with traffic police. Haha. Never get the chance to do it. But at 130, I didn't feel the bike would give way; felt as if it can still go faster.

Regarding low max speed and poor FC - could be lacking optimal synergy of various mechanical components. For e.g. carb tuning and petrol intake is not set to give optimal output. This will be very technical; one way to find out is to send your bike for dyno tuning. From there the mechanic will be able to advise on the performance of various aspects of the bike, and follw up with specific services accordingly.

Another way is to do a FULL overhaul, if it has never been done to your knowledge. And save time and cost as compared to servicing bits and pieces. After all, Version Ss are really old bikes.

checked before with at least 2 motordiam but all said no need to do anything. maybe bike too old, if really wanna catch the problem, will b time consuming...

anyway i just kanna a $200 summon n 12 demerit points, I going to ride or drive slow slow liao, most of my friends said i drive too fast, maybe is good that my bike cannot go too fast...
