Hi Hondaman,

I got to say that's an awesome pic, here's what i did for you, i felt like the ominous feeling didn't quite get through in the original colors. And the lightning should be emphasised with a crop in to give the illusion the lightning is massive.

Hello,

My question is, what are your recommendations for the cheapest prosumer camera that allows previewing the output via the viewfinder or an LCD screen (ala a DSLR camera). I need a camera to be able to tell me whether the output is going to be favourable or not when focusing, etc...

Pardon me for being a little bit picky, btw. Thanks!

Hi,

You are talking about scouting for a DSLR but asking for recommendations for the cheapest prosumer camera?

If you are talking about DSLR, previewing of images before hitting the shutter is termed as "Live Preview". Most DSLR, unlike P&S does not provide "Live Preview". However, there are some that support (e.g. Olympus E500, Fujifilm S5Pro, etc) but manufacturers do not really recommend long usage of it.

Also, you will not learn photography if you are forever using "Live Preview". By trial and error, you will soon know which are the angles; lightings that does not give good shoots. Lighting is the tricky part in photography a \nd it is never easy to understand the essence of it. However, it is also one that can gives you very good image if you understand it well.

Cheers

Lmodel is correct. Last time with film cameras, the suspense of getting good shots are there, which is why I too, waited for digital cameras so that I can "live preview the shots"

With film there'll be wastage, especially from poor shots, but that's where we learn.

Hey, thanks for your insight on professional photography!

The reason why I'm presenting you my requirements as factors that should influence my next camera purchase is because of the auto focusing system found on mid-range digital cameras. For example, the last time I was on my Canon Powershot, I was limited to using its autofocus function most of the time whilst taking pictures -- resulting in an incorrect focus on the subject that I want to take. Henceforth, I get pictures that look blurry.

Sure I could use manual focusing (read: press the + or - buttons on the camera) but neither the LCD screen nor the viewfinder did offer any way to preview what the camera's lens (i.e. beyond the CCD sensors) was actually "looking at"

I understand that getting the correct exposure in differing lighting environments can be quite fun for an amateur photographer, but my major area of concern is the focusing...If I don't get that right, it'll ruin the photo.

By the way, I have the Nikon D70 on hand. Pretty neat camera with lots of nice features for static and action shots.

Thanks!

This, I believed you are referring to Prosumer Camera. Unlike DSLR, most (if not all) Prosumers do not have any AF point and do auto focusing. The good news are that there is something call Multiple Face detection in cameras (P&S and prosumer) nowadays which actually detects the shape of a face and close in to focus.

Though it is possible to include AF points in Prosumer and P&S, it actually defeats the purpose of having them. Then again, how many people would actually know how to use it. Such cameras are marketed towards this grp of people whom have little knowledge about photography and thus, would prefer a fussy-free camera (thus termed as P&S) and with slightly more controls (the prosumer).

D70 is one very capable DSLR and I owned one myself. If you are into focusing and controls, do shoot more with your DSLR than to leave it in your dry-cabi.

Have fun shooting!

It's a good thing that you're considering the Nikon cameras. They're pretty good.

Even the D40 brings the best of both worlds...a simplistic Point-and-Shoot camera with professional DSLR features.

far taking high speed sport, you need a fast fps (frame per second) camera, Nikon D200 or Canon 30D atleast.

to take at night, you need some big apreture lens, those big lens with f2.8 aperture.

it is still ok to take fast moving object at night with:

Nikon D40

Nikon D40x

Canon EOS400D

but you need a fast zoom lens (like nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR), which cost you a few thousands (more expensive than you camera body).

i wanted to comment in ur other thread but i decided to hold back cos i wasn't sure how newbie/expert u are... can i safely assume that u're relatively new to dslrs? correct me if i'm wrong ok... sorry, heh

Your problem now is not really a body problem. As u noe, when u talk about dslr, you consider the body and lens on their own.. your bmx wun be going that fast, so i'm sure any of the dslrs u mentioned can handle that part of it.

The key here is that u are going to take shots at night, in poor lighting and yet u wanna freeze action.. ie, u need a very fast shutter, @ least 1/200 or 1/400 of a second. At that kind of shutter speed, your aperture has to be wide enuff to ensure proper exposure, if not ur shots come out dark.. .. for this kind of lenses, big aperture..not cheap... ur best hope if u ask me...get a 50 or 85mm prime.. cannot zoom, but the aperture goes up to f/1.8, which suits ur purpose.

dun wanna get wide ap lenses, bump up ur ISO..but that makes ur pic noisy.. another way could be to use flash, either the built in flash or an external flash... good for freezing motion.. but u may stun the rider along the way

That impact might have shifted the lenses or sensor, causing them to misalign.

(I might be wrong though)

I once had a Canon Powershot A70. Suffered a few bumps until one day, it decided to take pictures with an ugly pinkish tint...

hmm, is the wide-lens panasonic lumix good for a newbie to photography?

been interested in photography but i take very bad shots all the time, plus no camera to improve my skills, lol. I got a few pics i took with my friends digicam, not sure if you want me to post my lousy shots here, heh.

Nice lightning shots!

I want to be a rider!

Hope to get 'free' 2b in NS!

I put my pocket cameras in a soft case and also I carry by the lanyard, so it won't drop. If it drops, hopefully the case takes the brunt of the impact.

hey

i believe this is a common problem with the CCD supplied by their vendor, for that series of cameras (there was an announcement on the canon website). my A80 had it too (you can see my avatar pic, it has that pink tinge too). canon fixed mine for free, and will probably do yours on the same terms. you can get it checked up at their service centre.

my camera has been dropped before too, even once from hand height (1 metre?). it went everywhere with me for six months while i was on exchange program.

btw i was looking through my old pics just now, and found this one from suburban copenhagen (cropped and photoshopped). what's good and bad about this? how do i do it better next time?

Actually I took out and wrapped the strap around my wrist. then I put it back in. During my best fren wedding I used Cannon 850IS (My best fren Camera) & Panasonic Lumix FX9 to take the shots. Luckily the Cannon never dropped. but mine did when I quickly took out from my cam holder and took his pic but didnt reralized that I havent strap around my wrist. Hence I just dropped the camera with thoughts that it will just hang around but accidentally it fell 1.5m down to the hard ground. haiz...my fav camera... so sad.
